Reference Guide The Nursery Rhodos in bloom 04/10/10 Mom and Dad WinterberryWinter 2010 circa 2006 ‘m oonbeam’ Summer 2010 Twist-N-Shoutfall 2010 Dedication The Spring of 2011 will bring change to the front office of Four Seasons Nursery and Landscape Company. After 22 year of service, Charlyn Mair, a.k.a. Charlie, will be retiring for greener pastures. She and her husband Greg will be moving to Alabama to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. Charlie was hired back in 1988 and saved from a life of slingin hash, which we kid her about to this day. Although she was green as a fresh cut tree, Charlie somehow, someway adapted to the conditions of working in a male dominated company. She became tough as nails while still maintaining her character and charm. Charlie has become so intertwined with the inner workings of Four Seasons Nursery that it’s hard to imagine her not being here. How do you replace an employee that you can not only entrust your business, but entrust your own kids to? The executives won’t admit it, but replacing Charlie is a task they never wanted to be faced with. A dedication of neither a book nor all the accolades in the world can express the appreciation Four Seasons Nursery has for Charlie. She will be dearly missed, but thankfully only a phone call away. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your dedication, honesty, sense of humor, and most importantly for being you. We love you like a sister, an aunt and a mother and wish you the best of luck in your new endeavors.

A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing: Nonfiction University of Alaska Fairbanks May 2019 APPROVED: Daryl Farmer, Ph.D., Committee Chair Frank Soos, M.F.A., Committee Member Jennifer Schell, Ph.D., Committee Member Rich Carr, Ph.D., Chair Department of English Todd Sherman, M.F.A., Dean College of Liberal Arts Michael Castellini, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School Abstract This thesis is a collection of environmentally centered personal essays, some of which are also research driven. Many of the essays within are place-based and several reflect on what the word ‘home' means. The research-driven essays involved conducting literature reviews within academic journals and, in some cases, weaving that information with personal narrative. Throughout the thesis, there is a loose narrative arc that follows the author's nomadic wanderings and search for home. Although a home is never quite found, the author does find a deeper meaning on what it means to call a place ‘home.' While the order of essays jumps from one place to the next geographically, they are ordered in a chronological sense - although not completely. Throughout the collection, the author is in direct conversation with many writers who have inspired her own writing, including Edward Abbey, Henry Thoreau, Barry Lopez, and Terry Tempest Williams.

  • Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron.

  • Urban Species
Urban American robin General information American robins use a wide assortment of vegetation types, from mowed grassy areas to forested areas. In urban areas, robins use large open areas and nearby trees and shrubs. Parks, golf courses, and lawns in residential areas are attractive to robins. They are found throughout North America, though they may migrate out of northern latitudes during winters with sustained cold and snow. Robins build a nest of grass and mud on a tree or shrub limb, but will occasionally nest on building ledges. Robins spend considerable time on the ground feeding on earthworms, but also will perch on branches to eat berries, fruit, and insects. Habitat requirements Diet: insects and worms during spring and summer; soft mast from shrubs and trees in winter; seldom use artificial feeders Water: require water daily in warm seasons; obtain water from low-lying areas, ponds, and rain-filled gutters Cover: shrubs, evergreen trees, and deciduous trees used for nesting and escape; evergreen trees often used for early nests Wildlife management practices Control Nonnative Invasive Vegetation: when nonnative invasive vegetation begins to reduce habitat quality for American robins Plant Shrubs: where soft mast is lacking; examples might include dogwoods, hollies, golden currant and winterberry Plant Trees: both deciduous and evergreen; where nesting sites may be limiting Set-back Succession: prescribed fire, disking, and mowing can be used to set-back succession and provide suitable structure for robins Water Developments for Wildlife: birdbaths and pans of water can be provided in urban areas; do not place water in areas where cats can catch the birds; cats should be removed Wildlife or Fish Survey: observation counts and point counts are used to estimate trends in populations Mowing: to maintain suitable structure for robins in Urban areas Urban Wildlife Species - 1 Big brown bat General information Big brown bats are one of 46 bat species in North America.
