The reason of three stars is the book came ripped at the top of the spine down the middle. At first I thought it was the packaging Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 how would it rip right in the middle of the spine. It had to of been ripped or damaged at the manufactures warehouse before being shipped. Just a heads up. I loved the historical details, including the one character that was a member of the Varangian Guard in the Byzantine Empire. Looking forward to more. Great stories and drawings. A really good mix of sagas covering various themes aided with some great artwork. We'll worth the read if you have the time This is an excellent book. is one heck of a writer, and these stories are marvelous. I can't wait to get the other volumes! This is good, but Vinland Saga is far better. The artwork is good at times but there are also pages were its looks awful. I love ALL things Viking, and this does not disappoint. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommend. A pleasure to read. An exciting, entertaining and educational collection at a great price. At same time I preordered the last volume, I thought it was so good. High praise to buy something I can get from the Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 for free. It also encouraged me to get a number of histories of and books on the Northmen from the library which were very interesting and taught me a lot. An excellent book and at a great price for over pages. Best about Vikings to ever hit the stands, now available in a well priced deluxe format. Northlanders Book 1 is a beautiful deluxe edition which contains the first three volumes of Brian Woods epic pulpy historical fiction series about Vikings. It is a great deal, only 20 bucks on Amazon, and it has many short stories within ranging in size and content. Each separate story arc has a different artist and every single one does a wonderful job in this book. Especially the second story arc "The Shield Maidens" which is illustrated by the legendary Croatian artist Daniel Zezelj. The cover artist Massimo Carnevale, who provides the covers for the entire book, does a wonderful job of giving each story detailed paintings which Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 a lot of flare and style to this impressive collection. Howard style barbarian conquest tales. I had been looking for a great Viking book for years, and found myself being heavily disappointed with many of them. Especially The Vinland Saga, which although received tremendously Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 reviews and was recommended by many people, I found to be a childish, puerile, a huge Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 off of Berserk, and an incredibly inaccurate portrayal of Vikings. Northlanders is without question the best graphic novel of the genre to date. Wood's writing is always on point so I'd say this series gets a well deserved 5 stars. High quality tales of vikings. Great value for money. I admit to having no particular interest in stories of Vikings. Never seen the show, never picked up any other book and devoured tales of the legendary raiders. My interest in Northlanders was based on the size of the book ish pagesthe price and the fact that it's one of the few Vertigo series I don't own. Simply put, in comics, affordable, large paperbacks of original material are rare, and something to be savoured. The fact that I received a quality book is just icing on the cake as far as I am concerned. Written by Brian Wood creator of 'DmZ,' 'the Massive' and numerous superhero titles Northlanders is really a collection of varied short stories taking place over two hundred Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 throughout Ireland and Scandinavia as the Northlanders combat the Saxons. There is terrific variety between the tales. One is a siege story as three women fleeing their destroyed village make their stand in Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 coastal fort against vicious Saxon raiders. Another follows a Northlander detective of sorts, investigating a series of politically-motivated murders in conquered Ireland, whilst simultaneously showcasing the murderer Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 his daughter on the run. The largest and strongest story follows an exiled Northlander returning to his homwtown in the North from the metropolis of Constantinople to reclaim his birthright. Every story is well-written. Brian Wood has delivered a far superior work to his previous series 'DMZ' which covered fascinating political themes, but struggled at times to create an exceptional narrative to discuss these themes. Not so with 'Northlanders. Each story is drawn by a different artist, all talented, all delivering strong work. I have some issue with who draws the opening story. I believe his style is better suited to horror, or , though he also draws the finest page in the book with his breathtaking double-page splash of our first encounter with the Vikings. The book is structured in the style of a samurai story, with plenty of splash pages and an epic, expansive feel, whilst retaining plenty of densely- panelled pages packed with story, when the work requires it. Additional material is fairly minimal with only a few pages of sketches and so-on. Still, this is excusable, considering the size, price and low-profile of the book. I really am pleased with 'Northlanders. I fully reccomend the book, the first of three in the reprint series. I'm eagerly awaiting the next one. This product is currently out of stock. It provides just enough historical information which gives you a real sense of the time. The artwork is solid with an older style feel. Definitely reccomend this for any viking fans. Oct 27, Crystal Starr Light rated it it was amazing Shelves: graphic-novelhistoricalvertigo. Bullet Review: Fantastic; just as good - no better - than the previous one. This volume, we "only" get four stories, but sharpening and focusing on a smaller number means those stories are absolute winners. If you like Vikings, why haven't you read this series? Well-researched, full of well-drawn characters, Woods' Northlanders series leads the reader through a series of vignettes about the hardships of love, life, and war in the far north. If you enjoyed "The Last Kingdom" this is for you. Oct 27, Judah Radd rated it it was amazing Shelves: vertigo-comics. The series rules. Nuff said. Similar to the last book, and just as great. This time, it all takes place in Iceland. I saw some geographical features that I recognized from my visit. The stories were harsh like the first one. Once again, much of the satisfaction was deliberately withheld, while some key victories were delivered. The Sven story was incredibly fascinating, despite being short. The last coup The series rules. The last couple tales meandered, but came together nicely. This is intellectual, thoughtful and informative reading. I recommend this to anyone who like loves great writing and better art. Jun 03, Pete rated it really liked it. The origin and eventual decline of a Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 against the background of hard life on Iceland, warring clans and the eventual arrival of Christianity. I loved it. Dec 23, Jacob rated it really liked it Shelves: comic-books. A solid and entertaining tale of the Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2. Mar 09, Larakaa rated it liked it. If you like the "Viking" TV show this book is perfect for you. I still clearly remember the stories in Northlanders Book 1: The Anglo-Saxon Sagahigh tales of treachery, Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2, and fights for survival. I was retelling one of the Northlanders Book 1 stories to my partner last week. I was taken straight back Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 one particular story of three women fighting to keep their lives against a group of violent angry men. It was brilliant. Northlanders Book Two I had to read the back cover to jog my memory. I read it in one sitting a few days ago. The stories wer I still clearly remember the stories in Northlanders Book 1: The Anglo-Saxon Sagahigh tales of treachery, terror, and fights for survival. The stories were fun and engaging whilst I read them, but none really stood out. None will stay with me in the way the Book 1 stories have. Wood has reconstructed probably quite typical events from the viking ages. Where life depended on keeping warm and knowing how to fight. In Book 2 the Christians arrive from across the water, bringing their christian god and their christian ways. They threaten to usurp the old gods and the old ways. In a small village it was probably a big village to its Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 people fight among themselves to hold power over their new discovery of Iceland. There are a number of women in these stories. The women mostly stay home and tend to home stuff but they're always wrapped up in the events. When the men go off to fight for their family honour, the women take charge. We get depictions of strong, smart women. Women who understand the consequences of events far better than their male peers. That was rather nice to read, but you have to take it as it is. These aren't modern women. The book starts in AD and ends in AD. These women lived in Northlanders: The Icelandic Saga Book 2 time where a husbands means they lose everything. They have no voice in their village council. They're left to tend children, cook the food and avoid the bloodshed. Yet we still get to see the strengths they did have. If anything, the women of Northlanders show the weakness of their men. The women survive without the men, but the men don't do well without the women. There are a number of strong women characters who stand as near equals with their husbands and men. And in the end, when there's no one left to kill, when all the men have finished wiping one another out, one woman remains and her father-in-law who avoided the fighting when he was 'removed' from power. If you enjoyed Northlanders Book 1, you'll enjoy this one, but it does drag at times. The artists, including of Saga, Vol. Northlanders Book 2: The Icelandic Saga on Apple Books
