Sparhawk-Jones: Art Feature ART FEATURE Elizabeth Sparlzawk-Jones NOTES ON THE PAINTINGS AL THO UGH MOD E RN in spirit, Sparhawk-Jones is one of those artists who continues the tradition of previous centuries. Many of her paintings are frankly and recognizably pictures of people, and of the way people feel about themselves and their situation. Other examples of her work are pictures of ideas poeti cally viewed, such as romantic love, or injustice. AIl of her paint ings may be described as icons of personality, highly stylized and symbolic images. Icons encourage iconography, the study of the forms of representation. Although a painting by Sparhawk-Jones can be appreciated as an abstract, esthetic image apart from its literary- meaning, the subject represented is as important, if not more important, than the composition and color in determining the total impreSsion the painting gives. The purpose of the notes that, follow is to suggest (without attempting to be definitive or fanciful) , meanings inherent in a few of these paintings.

  • Art Appreciation Meeting 11-01-18
Art Appreciation Meeting 11-01-18 Painting 1 (Elaine Evans). John Collier (1850 – 1934): ‘Lady Godiva’ (1897). Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry. (Public Domain) Elaine talked about the history of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, named after Sir Alfred Herbert (1866 – 1957) an English industrialist and museum benefactor. The foundation stone of the Art Gallery and Museum was laid in 1954 and the Gallery has had a recent extension, including Archives storage and a Café. Lady Godiva was an 11th Century noblewoman, who is mentioned in the Domesday Survey. She owned land in her own right. She was just, fair, pious, proud, in strong contrast to her husband, The Earl Leofric who was a tyrant who levied an oppressive tax on his people. Elaine told the story of Lady Godiva’s ride through Coventry, naked, to shame her unpopular husband. In 1949 a statue of her was erected in Coventry. Collier was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the painting measures 4’8” x 6’. There are many paintings of Lady Godiva in the gallery. There is a sense of rich colour and heightened brush strokes in this painting. Among the many details in this painting are the richly ornamented horse cloth and the ornate column behind Lady Godiva. There is also an anomaly on the building to the right, which is not in keeping with period. Links: John Collier Lady Godiva, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. Painting 2 (Anne Williams) Jan Asselijn (1610 - 1652). ‘The Threatened Swan’ (1650, oil) Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Asselijn was a Dutch Golden Age painter and this painting is in the same gallery as 'The Night Watch' by Rembrandt.

Profes- sor of English and American literature and language Daniel Donoghue exam- ines the origins and cultural signi- ficance of the myth in Lady Godiva: A Literary History of the Legend (Blackwell), and o≠ers insights into how that myth has evolved over the centuries. “The story,” he notes, “was based on the life of Godifu, a real woman who lived in Coventry in the latter part of the eleventh century and was married to one of the most powerful men in England.” Contemporary historians did not con- sider Godifu particularly noteworthy; what little was written about her at the time mentioned her merely as the wife of a famous man. • Negotiating Femininity As Spectacle Within the Victorian Cultural Sphere
CRACKED MIRRORS AND PETRIFYING VISION: NEGOTIATING FEMININITY AS SPECTACLE WITHIN THE VICTORIAN CULTURAL SPHERE by LUCINDA IRESON A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham November 2013 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT Taking as it basis the longstanding alignment of men with an active, eroticised gaze and women with visual spectacle within Western culture, this thesis demonstrates the prevalence of this model during the Victorian era, adopting an interdisciplinary approach so as to convey the varied means by which the gendering of vision was propagated and encouraged. Chapter One provides an overview of gender and visual politics in the Victorian age, subsequently analysing a selection of texts that highlight this gendered dichotomy of vision. Chapter Two focuses on the theoretical and developmental underpinnings of this dichotomy, drawing upon both Freudian and object relations theory. Chapters Three and Four centre on women’s poetic responses to this imbalance, beginning by discussing texts that convey awareness and discontent before moving on to examine more complex portrayals of psychological trauma.

His awakening was simple, easy, without move- ment save for the eyes that opened and made him aware of darkness. Unlike most, who must feel and grope and listen to, and contact with, the world about them, he knew himself on the moment of awakening, in- stantly identifying himself in time and place and personality. After the lapsed hours of sleep he took up, without effort, the interrupted tale of his days. He knew himself to be Dick Forrest, the master of broad acres, who had fallen asleep hours before after drowsily putting a match between the pages of "Road Town" and pressing off the electric reading lamp.
