  • An Encapsulation of Óðinn: Religious Belief and Ritual Practice Among The
An Encapsulation of Óðinn: Religious belief and ritual practice among the Viking Age elite with particular focus upon the practice of ritual hanging 500 -1050 AD A thesis presented in 2015 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Aberdeen by Douglas Robert Dutton M.A in History, University of Aberdeen MLitt in Scandinavian Studies, University of Aberdeen Centre for Scandinavian Studies The University of Aberdeen Summary The cult surrounding the complex and core Old Norse deity Óðinn encompasses a barely known group who are further disappearing into the folds of time. This thesis seeks to shed light upon and attempt to understand a motif that appears to be well recognised as central to the worship of this deity but one rarely examined in any depth: the motivations for, the act of and the resulting image surrounding the act of human sacrifice or more specifically, hanging and the hanged body. The cult of Óðinn and its more violent aspects has, with sufficient cause, been a topic carefully set aside for many years after the Second World War. Yet with the ever present march of time, we appear to have reached a point where it has become possible to discuss such topics in the light of modernity. To do so, I adhere largely to a literary studies model, focussing primarily upon eddic and skaldic poetry and the consistent underlying motifs expressed in conjunction with descriptions of this seemingly ritualistic act. To these, I add the study of legal and historical texts, linguistics and contemporary chronicles.

  • Hvorledes Norge Ble Bosatt

  • Matveeva, Elizaveta (2016) Reconsidering the Tradition: the Odinic Hero As Saga Protagonist. Phd Thesis, University of Nottingha
RECONSIDERING THE TRADITION: THE ODINIC HERO AS SAGA PROTAGONIST Elizaveta Matveeva, MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy OCTOBER 2015 1 AСKNOWLEDGEMENTS A number of people greatly supported me throughout the years of my work on this dissertation. First and foremost, I would never have been able to make it this far without the love and support of my husband Mikhail, who had always given me not only comfort and encouragement, but also constructive criticism and hours of proofreading. My warmest gratitude goes to my supervisors Prof Judith Jesch and Dr Paul Cavill who made this research possible by being unbelievably helpful, patient and generous with their time. It is Judith who introduced me to Medieval Studies as an academic field and guided and supported me ever since, helping me to get my direction but always encouraging independent choice. Throughout my first year at the University of Nottingham, both Judith and Dr Christina Lee allowed me to participate in their seminars for postgraduate students, helping my transition to the field of Old Norse studies and giving me some of the best academic classes I have ever had. My obligation to individual lecturers and colleagues extends to the University of Nottingham as an institution that funded my study and conference trips with Vice- Chancellor's Scholarship for Research Excellence, Christine Fell Award and Graduate School Travel Prize. I have also received support from the Viking Society for Northern Research and AHRC that allowed my participation in the Orkney Viking Heritage Project. Finally, Fund Soros’s Global Supplementary Grant Program covered my living expenses for two years, allowing me to focus on my research.

Flateyjarbók Hversu Noregr Byggðist How Norway was Settled Translated by © 2011 George L. Hardman 1. Frá niðjum Fornjóts - Of Fornjót's Ancestors Now we shall speak of how Norway was founded in the beginning, how the line of kings began there or in other lands, and why they are called Skjöldungs, Buđlungs, Bragnings, Öđlings, Völsungs or Niflungs, from which the lines of kings come. There was a man named Fornjót. He had three sons; one was named Hlér(Ægir – a szerk.), the second Logi, and the third Kári. He ruled the winds, but Logi ruled fire, and Hlér ruled the sea. Kári was the father of Jökul, the Glacier, father of King Snae, Snow. The sons of King Snae were Þorri, Fönn, Drífa and Mjöll. Þorri was a wonderful king. He ruled Gotland, Kaenland, and Finland. He celebrated Kaens so that snow was made and travel on skis was good. That is their beginning. The celebration is held in the middle of winter, and from that time on was called the month of Þorri. King Þorri had three children. His sons were called Nórr and Górr, and his daughter Gói. Gói vanished, and Þorri made a sacrifice a month later than he was accustomed to celebrate, and since then the month that begins then was called Gói. Nórr and Górr searched for their sister. Nórr had a great battle west of Kjölu, and the kings fell before him, who were named: Véi and Vei, Hunding, and Heming, and Nórr took control of that land all the way to the sea.

The Volsungasaga is of course well known, but with this * exception the Stories of Icelanders,' and the 'Stories of the Kings of Norway' are probably the only sagas familiar to the majority of English readers. Of the four sagas contained in this volume only one the Thdttr of Sorli has appeared in English before, though the poetry which they contain has frequently been translated, from the time of Hickes's Thesaurus (1705). So far as I am' aware "no version of any of the Faroese ballads has appeared in English. Out of the great number which were collected during the i8th and rothS centuries L'-have chosen a few which deal with the same stories as the sagas translated here; and for purposes of comparison I have added a short extract from one of the Icelandic Rimur, as well as a Danish ballad and part of the Shetland Hildina. In accordance with general custom in works of this kind I have discarded the use of accents, un- familiar symbols, etc., except in a few Norse words which can hardly be anglicised.

Particular reference, however, should here be made to the late William Henry Schofield, Professor of Comparative Literature in , Harvard University and President of The Amer- ican-Scandinavian Foundation, under whose guid- ance this translation was begun; to Henry God- dard Leach, for many years Secretary of The American-Scandinavian Foundation, and to Wil- liam Witherle Lawrence, Professor of English in Columbia University and Chairman of the Foundation's Committee on Publications, for their assistance with the manuscript and the proofs ; and to Hanna Astrup Larsen, the Foundation's lit- erary secretary, for her efficient management of the complex details of publication. GENERAL INTRODUCTION is scarcely any literary work of great im- portance which has been less readily available for THEREthe general reader, or even for the serious student of literature, than the Poetic Edda.

  • Skjöldings `The Sceptre Will Not Depart from Judah' (Genesis 49:10)
Danish Royal Coat of Arms North Rhine- Westphalian Coat of Arms UK Royal Coat of Arms by Rolf Ward Green Skjöldings `The sceptre will not depart from Judah' (Genesis 49:10) arious sources have preserved the descent of Danish and other kings such as Norwegian and Anglo Saxon as a direct male line beginning with Noa (Noah). Sceaf, an ancestor of Sceldwea or Skjöld is an ancestor of a mythical god-warrior named Woden, known by some as the god Odin (cf Wodan). The sons of Odin include Baldeg, Njord, and Skjöld. The first of them is Baldeg, ancestor of the Anglo Saxon House of Wessex. Njord (Njörðr) is father of the Norwegian kings. These three are all sons of Woden, so-called `Woden-born'. The three sons of Woden descend from the ancestor Noe (Noa), said to be the Biblical Noah (see below): Patriarchal Genealogies of the Danish, Norwegian, Icelanders, and Anglo Saxons ASS WSC LAN ETH EDD NEN Noe Noe Noa ? ? ? | | | | | | Seth Sceaf Seskef Scef Seskef ? | | | | | | Beduuig Bedwig Bedvig ? • Hervarar Saga Ok Hei!Reks
VIKING SOCIETY FOR NORTHERN RESEARCH TEXT SERIES General Editor: G. Turville-Petre II HERVARAR SAGA OK HEI!REKS HERVARAR SAGA OK HEIÐREKS WITH NOTES AND GLOSSARY BY G. TURVILLE-PETRE INTRODUCTION BY CHRISTOPHER TOLKIEN VIKING SOCIETY FOR NORTHERN RESEARCH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON © Viking Society for Northern Research 1956 Reprinted 1976 with minor corrections and additional bibliography Reprinted 1997 in the University of Birmingham Reprinted 2006 and 2014 (with minor corrections) by Short Run Press Limited, Exeter ISBN: 978-0-903521-11-6 PREFACE The Heruarar Saga ok Heidreks has been selected as the second volume in the Viking Society's Text Series since it stands in sharp contrast to the first volume, the Gunnlaugs Saga, representing an entirely different branch of Icelandic fiterature. The Gunnlaugs Saga might be read as an historical novel, but with the Hervarar Saga we pass into a world of legend and myth. The verses contained in this saga are of particular interest; they represent three distinct styles and are among the most beautiful of their kind. The textual history of this saga is unusually com- plicated, and the text here presented has been prepared and carefully normalized by Dr, GuSni J6nsson on the basis of the critical edition of Dr, J6n Helgason {Heidreks Saga, Copenhagen 1924), in which fidl variant apparatus is provided. It has been decided to keep the Notes in the present book as short as possible, but it is hoped that the Glossary will provide such information as the student needs for enjojmient of the text, I wish first of all to thank Christopher Tolkien, whose knowledge of the legends of this saga has exceptional value, for contributing the Introduction and advising me on many points of detail, Peter G, Foote has kindly read the proofs of the Glossary and saved me from many pitfalls, and Dr, Einar Cl, Sveinsson has also given helpful advice.

  • In 1066 the Fitzwilliams Family Left Normandy for England, and Changed Their Name to Hall.” in All of My Time Gathering Family Information, I Never Knew This Tidbit
In 2005 our Jesse Hall reunion notice indicated that “In 1066 the Fitzwilliams family left Normandy for England, and changed their name to Hall.” In all of my time gathering family information, I never knew this tidbit. Nor did I ever hear my mother mention it, so I’m not sure where this came from. However, if there’s anything to it, it looks like we need a lot more research. Here’s some Fitzwilliam info I found onn the net . start at the bottom . ____________________ Vermund "the Sage" Frodasson (the Wise) aka King of Denmark Born about 0369 in Denmark Son of [father unknown] and [mother unknown] [sibling(s) unknown] Husband of Dampi UNKNOWN — married [date unknown] [location unknown] Father of Olaf Vermundsson Died [date unknown] in Denmark ______________ Olaf "the Mild, the Humble" Vermundsson aka King of Denmark Born 0391 in Hleithra, Nordjylland, Jutland, Denmark Son of Vermund Frodasson (the Wise) and Mrs. Vermund Frodasson [sibling(s) unknown] Husband of Danpi of Denmark — married 0411 in Denmark Father of Dan Olafsson Died 0411 in Denmark _______________ Dan "Den Stolte, The Proud" Olafsson Born about 0412 in Hleithra, Nordjylland, Jutland, Denmark Son of Olaf Vermundsson and Danpi of Denmark [sibling(s) unknown] Husband of Mrs. Dan Olafsson — married [date unknown] [location unknown] Husband of Auda Queen of Denmark — married 0429 [location unknown] Father of Frodi Dansson Died about 0503 [location unknown] ________________ Frodi (Frodi III) "Den Fridfulle, The Peacable" Dansson Born 0433 in Hleithra, Nordjylland, Jutland, Denmark
