ALEXANDER ADELAAR Asia Institute, University of Melbourne [email protected] The traditional languages in Indonesia’s West Kalimantan Province are pre- dominantly Malayic and Bidayuhic (although some other language groups are also represented). Mualang belongs to the Ibanic branch of the Malayic lan- guage group and is spoken in the Belitang Hulu, Belitang Hilir and Belitang districts of Sekadau Regency (formerly part of Sanggau Regency). Based on purely linguistic criteria, it is clearly in a dialect relation with Iban, one of the main languages in Sarawak and a minority language in West Kalimantan. It is probably even more like Iban than some other Ibanic languages, which have not developed the diphthongs that are so typical of Iban and Mualang (for example, datay ‘come’; jalay ‘road’; tikay ‘mat’). Notable differences between the two varieties are that Iban does not exhibit nasal preplosion and postplo- sion (see below), and that Iban has acquired a transitive suffix –ka, whereas in Mualang this element is still a preposition. According to Tjia, another dif- ference is that in Iban mid vowels are phonemic whereas in Mualang they are allophones of high vowels, but this is just a matter of analysis, as Scott (1957) was able to show that Iban high and mid vowels were still allophones, in spite of the rather non-phonemic Iban spelling conventions. -

Journal of Education & Social Policy Vol. 1 No. 1; June 2014 Understanding the Concept of Islamic Sufism Shahida Bilqies Research Scholar, Shah-i-Hamadan Institute of Islamic Studies University of Kashmir, Srinagar-190006 Jammu and Kashmir, India. Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby Tawhid is achieved. All Muslims believe in Unity as expressed in the most Universal sense possible by the Shahadah, la ilaha ill’Allah. The Sufi has realized the mysteries of Tawhid, who knows what this assertion means. It is only he who sees God everywhere.1 Sufism can also be explained from the perspective of the three basic religious attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an. These are the attitudes of Islam, Iman and Ihsan.There is a Hadith of the Prophet (saw) which describes the three attitudes separately as components of Din (religion), while several other traditions in the Kitab-ul-Iman of Sahih Bukhari discuss Islam and Iman as distinct attitudes varying in religious significance. These are also mentioned as having various degrees of intensity and varieties in themselves. The attitude of Islam, which has given its name to the Islamic religion, means Submission to the Will of Allah. This is the minimum qualification for being a Muslim. Technically, it implies an acceptance, even if only formal, of the teachings contained in the Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet (saw). Iman is a more advanced stage in the field of religion than Islam. It designates a further penetration into the heart of religion and a firm faith in its teachings. -

Like rituals in Europe, wacdat have recently been and are still today under a process of revitalization. On the basis of an inquiry led in West Algeria, the author analyses the evolution and impact of such feasts on local and national identities. The survey shows the importance of playful celebrations and aesthetic pleasure during the feast and explains how and why the wacdat promotes particularly the Bedouin heritage and also tourism. In his article dealing with festa (festival) in the Maltese village of Naxxar (and more generally in Malta), Jeremy Boissevain (1992: 151) wrote: “The growth of play does something for the Naxxarin in two ways. It promotes both identity and a sense of togetherness. Festive celebrations promote indi- vidual identity by providing scope for ordinary folk to dress up, to be on stage, to take part as individuals in a public event; neighbourhood identity by cel- ebrating patron saints and so creating a Durkheimian sense of segmentary solidarity around local symbols; village community by elaborating community celebrations that further intravillage solidarity by being performed for local rivals; and national identity by consciously celebrating aspects of Malta’s cultural heritage for foreigners (…). -

Moreover, a good society derives from good families and good families derive from righteous individuals who transmit insight that builds good character. In Islam, the transmission of this insight is called aqidah (belief system), which continually plays an active role in the enhancement of personal accountability. This study took a qualitative approach using personal interviews to determine methods used to teach aqidah in Malaysia. Findings revealed four methods including multimedia, slide presentations, group discussions and teacher didactics. Such social actions and social needs are root-cause of various social relationships. The art of building true relationships is one of social actions which create harmony and tolerance among the people. Shah’s poetry offers openness to demonstrate good behavior and make global relationships with glowing understanding of spiritual concepts about different religions. There are poetic signs and symbols which connect hearts of people together in the same way as social needs are ground reasons of peaceful relationships. This poetry is a creative attempt with many signs and symbols of love, peace and spirituality. Like the poetic words are very catchy and appealing with unique spiritual flavour that starts its function of connecting people together while enjoying the reading as well as listening spiritual music (Shah-Jo-Raag). The unique flavour of reciting verses is genuinely food for human inner-soul and thought that creates a collective wish of social solidarity. Through the spiritual symbols of Shah’s poetry many intellectual scholars are globally connected in the present era of terrorism and frustrations because the continuous pursuit of reading Shah’s poetry and listening spiritual music promotes sense of spirituality among the people on becoming peaceful citizens. This worthwhile poetry helps on improving the sense of spirituality and such capability is the basic need of our present as well as future generations. -
