Benton2* & Andrew Ross3 1 Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, 16–18 Queen Square, Bath BA1 2HN, UK 2 School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol, Bristol BS8 2BU, UK 3 National Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH1 1JF, UK * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: The Strawberry Bank Lagerstätte provides a rich insight into Early Jurassic marine vertebrate life, revealing exquisite anatomical detail of marine reptiles and large pachycormid fishes thanks to exceptional preservation, and especially the uncrushed, 3D nature of the fossils. The site documents a fauna of Early Jurassic nektonic marine animals (five species of fishes, one species of marine crocodilian, two species of ichthyosaurs, cephalopods and crustaceans), but also over 20 spe- cies of insects. Unlike other fossil sites of similar age, the 3D preservation at Strawberry Bank provides unique evidence on palatal and braincase structures in the fishes and reptiles. The age of the site is important, documenting a marine ecosystem during recovery from the end-Triassic mass extinction, but also exactly coincident with the height of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, a further time of turmoil in evolution. -

Phylogeny, Diversity, and Ecology of the Ammonoid Superfamily Acanthoceratoidea Through the Cenomanian and Turonian

MERTZ A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE August 2017 Committee: Margaret Yacobucci, Advisor Andrew Gregory Keith Mann © 2017 David Mertz All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Margaret Yacobucci Both increased extinction and decreased origination, caused by rising oceanic anoxia and decreased provincialism, respectively, have been proposed as the cause of the Cenomanian Turonian (C/T) extinction event for ammonoids. Conflicting evidence exists for whether diversity actually dropped across the C/T. This study used the ammonoid superfamily Acanthoceratoidea as a proxy for ammonoids as a whole, particularly focusing on genera found in the Western Interior Seaway (WIS) of North America, including Texas. Ultimately, this study set out to determine 1) whether standing diversity decreased across the C/T boundary in the WIS, 2) whether decreased speciation or increased extinction in ammonoids led to a drop in diversity in the C/T extinction event, 3) how ecology of acanthoceratoid genera changed in relation to the C/T extinction event, and 4) whether these ecological changes indicate rising anoxia as the cause of the extinction. In answering these questions, three phylogenetic analyses were run that recovered the families Acanthoceratidae, Collignoniceratidae, and Vascoceratidae. Pseudotissotiidae was not recovered at all, while Coilopoceratidae was recovered but reclassified as a subfamily of Vascoceratidae. Seven genera were reclassified into new families and one genus into a new subfamily. After calibrating the trees with stratigraphy, I was able to determine that standing diversity dropped modestly across the C/T boundary and the Early/Middle Turonian boundary. -

We compiled detailed information on 252 occurrences of belemnites in six National Park Service (NPS) areas in Alaska. This information was based on published literature and maps, unpublished U.S. Geological Survey internal fossil reports (“Examination and Report on Referred Fossils” or E&Rs), the U.S. Geological Survey Mesozoic locality register, the Alaska Paleontological Database, the NPS Paleontology Archives and our own records of belemnites found in museum collections. Few specimens have been identified and many consist of fragments. However, even these suboptimal specimens provide evidence that belemnites are present in given formations and provide direction for future research. Two especially interesting avenues for research concern the time range of belemnites in Alaska. Belemnites are known to have originated in what is now Europe in the Early Jurassic Hettangian and to have a well-documented world-wide distribution in the Early Jurassic Toarcian. -
