Resumo O Cerrado ocupa cerca de 23,3% do território brasileiro e é reconhecido por ter uma flora muito rica e com elevado nível de endemismo. O Cerrado é um complexo fisionômico que vai de campo limo à cerradão. Esse gradiente fisionômico aumenta com a disponibilidade de nutrientes, profundidade do solo e capacidade de água no solo. No estado de São Paulo, restam apenas 3% de Cerrado, sendo que ocupava originalmente 32,7%. A flora de cerrado do estado apresenta uma composição única em relação às outras áreas do país. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar, por meio do Índice de Diversidade de Shannon-Wiener, se há um aumento da diversidade florística em função do aumento da estrutura fisionômica de cerrado no estado de São Paulo. Levantamos 24 áreas em três fisionomias e comparamos as médias do índice com erro- padrão da média. Foi encontrado uma média de 3,24 no campo cerrado, 3,13 no cerrado senso stricto e e 3,23 nats/indivíduo no cerradão, não diferindo estatisticamente. Nossos resultados mostram que a diversidade não está relacionada ao gradiente de biomassa no Cerrado Paulista, mas indica a importância de fisionomias não florestais para a biodiversidade dos cerrados paulistas. A média geral de 3,18 de Índice de Shannon coloca a diversidade da flora do Cerrado Paulista abaixo das Florestas Amazônicas e Atlânticas, muito próximo da vegetação Pantanal e acima dos valores encontrado para Pampas e Caatinga. Abstract The Cerrado occupies about 23.3% of the Brazilian territory, and its flora is very rich and had a high level of endemism. The Cerrado is a physiognomic complex that goes from grasslands to forests. This physiognomic gradient increases with nutrient availability, soil depth, and water capacity in the soil. In the state of São Paulo, only 3% of Cerrado remains, being 32.7% originally occupied. The cerrado flora of the state has a unique composition compared to other areas of the country. Our objective was to evaluate, through the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index, if there is an increase in floristic diversity owing to the increase in the cerrado’s physiognomic structure in São Paulo state. We surveyed 24 areas on three physiognomies and compared the index means with the standard error of the mean. An average of 3.24 was found in the campo cerrado, 3.13 in the cerrado sensu stricto, and 3.23 nats/individual in the cerradão, which did not differ statistically. Our results show that the diversity is not related to the biomass gradient in the Cerrado

Manship ABSTRACT Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is utilized to apply spatial analysis tech- niques to visually and quantitatively match ammonoid suture patterns for classification. The Turonian ammonite family Coilopoceratidae was chosen as the basis for this project, because the similar suture patterns within the family make species-level identi- fication a challenge. A Coilopoceras springeri suture template was created by overlay- ing 10 different Coilopoceras springeri suture patterns, using the right holotype suture pattern as the basal or designation guide. Templates for Coilopoceras colleti and Hopli- toides sandovalensis sutures were constructed in the same manner. Sutures of known and unknown specimens were tested within the templates in order to identify species. The sutures of known specimens matched with the correct templates and did not com- pare well with other species’ templates. Sutures of unknown specimens clearly fit within one template better than within others and, hence, could be reliably classified to the species level. In addition to species classification, the GIS method provides a mechanism for both visual and quantitative comparisons of individual sutures. This GIS method will aid professional and avocational paleontologists, biostratigraphers, and geologists in classifying ammonite species, and may help further our understanding of suture morphogenesis and function by providing a standard basis for morphological comparison of complex sutural patterns. Swiss J Palaeontol (2020) 139:9 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13358-020-00210-y Swiss Journal of Palaeontology RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access First record of non-mineralized cephalopod jaws and arm hooks from the latest Cretaceous of Eurytania, Greece Christian Klug1* , Donald Davesne2,3, Dirk Fuchs4 and Thodoris Argyriou5 Abstract Due to the lower fossilization potential of chitin, non-mineralized cephalopod jaws and arm hooks are much more rarely preserved as fossils than the calcitic lower jaws of ammonites or the calcitized jaw apparatuses of nautilids. Here, we report such non-mineralized fossil jaws and arm hooks from pelagic marly limestones of continental Greece. Two of the specimens lie on the same slab and are assigned to the Ammonitina; they represent upper jaws of the aptychus type, which is corroborated by fnds of aptychi. Additionally, one intermediate type and one anaptychus type are documented here. The morphology of all ammonite jaws suggest a desmoceratoid afnity. The other jaws are identifed as coleoid jaws. They share the overall U-shape and proportions of the outer and inner lamellae with Jurassic lower jaws of Trachyteuthis (Teudopseina). We also document the frst belemnoid arm hooks from the Tethyan Maastrichtian. The fossils described here document the presence of a typical Mesozoic cephalopod assemblage until the end of the Cretaceous in the eastern Tethys. MERTZ A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE August 2017 Committee: Margaret Yacobucci, Advisor Andrew Gregory Keith Mann © 2017 David Mertz All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Margaret Yacobucci Both increased extinction and decreased origination, caused by rising oceanic anoxia and decreased provincialism, respectively, have been proposed as the cause of the Cenomanian Turonian (C/T) extinction event for ammonoids. Conflicting evidence exists for whether diversity actually dropped across the C/T. This study used the ammonoid superfamily Acanthoceratoidea as a proxy for ammonoids as a whole, particularly focusing on genera found in the Western Interior Seaway (WIS) of North America, including Texas. Ultimately, this study set out to determine 1) whether standing diversity decreased across the C/T boundary in the WIS, 2) whether decreased speciation or increased extinction in ammonoids led to a drop in diversity in the C/T extinction event, 3) how ecology of acanthoceratoid genera changed in relation to the C/T extinction event, and 4) whether these ecological changes indicate rising anoxia as the cause of the extinction. In answering these questions, three phylogenetic analyses were run that recovered the families Acanthoceratidae, Collignoniceratidae, and Vascoceratidae. Pseudotissotiidae was not recovered at all, while Coilopoceratidae was recovered but reclassified as a subfamily of Vascoceratidae. Seven genera were reclassified into new families and one genus into a new subfamily. After calibrating the trees with stratigraphy, I was able to determine that standing diversity dropped modestly across the C/T boundary and the Early/Middle Turonian boundary.
