GOLDEYES WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT STEVE SCHUSTER – WINNIPEG GOLDEYES – FRIDAY, AUGUST 30th WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (55-42) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 5-4 at Shaw Park on Friday night. The Goldeyes have won six games in a row. Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Goldeyes scored four runs with two outs to take the lead. With second and third and two outs, Kyle Martin lined a sharp single up the middle that scored both runners. After Joel Seddon relieved Canaries’ starter Sam Bragg, Willy Garcia hit a two-run home run to left-centre. “Great game, I thought the guys looked good tonight,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. “We got some big, timely hits. Martin drove in some runs. Willy got the big home run late. Pitching was good. Joel was really good today, and the bullpen did a good job adjusting.” The Canaries (37-60) answered back with three runs in the top of the eighth. Michael Hart led off with a home run to right-centre, and the Canaries pulled within 5-4 on back-to-back RBI groundouts from Brett Vertigan and Alay Lago. The Birds (37-60) rallied late against the host Winnipeg Goldeyes (55-42) but fell 5-4 in the opening game of their last series of 2019. The Birds scored three runs in the eighth inning to cut what was a four-run deficit to one, but couldn't get over the hump. Mike Hart led the way for the Sioux Falls, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBIs. The game was tight early on. Winnipeg jumped out in front with an RBI single from Kyle Martin, and Hart knocked an RBI double to tie the score in the second. The score stayed that way through the seventh-inning stretch. Goldeyes starter Joel Bender threw six innings of one run ball Birds starter Sam Bragg ran into trouble in the seventh. A Reggie Abercrombie double put men on second and third for Martin, who drove in two with another single. That chased Bragg from the game. Canaries manager Mike Meyer brought Joel Seddon in to pitch. Goldeyes designated hitter Willy Garcia hit a two-run homer off Seddon to make it 5-1 Winnipeg. The Birds scored three in the third, starting with Hart's home run. Brett Vertigan and Alay Lago each drove in runs with ground balls to cut the deficit to 5-4. Goldeyes closer Victor Capellan struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save. UP NEXT The Birds face off with Winnipeg in game two of their four-game series Saturday night at 6 p.m. Right-hander Kevin Hilton will start for Winnipeg; Tyler Herron will take the ball for Sioux Falls. Birds fans can tune in on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 98.1 FM and AM 1230 KWSN and KWSN.com. FISH PITCHING ACE TRADED JASON BELL – WINNIPEG FREE PRESS – SATURDAY, AUGUST 31st Kevin McGovern is getting a chance to extend his baseball season — although it won’t be with the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The ace of the pitching staff was traded to the Atlantic League’s Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Friday in exchange for future considerations. The Goldeyes (54-42) will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive American Association season. However, the Atlantic League plays a 140-game regular-season schedule that continues through late September. The Blue Crabs are members of the Freedom Division and have climbed to within just 4.0 games of first place in the second half of the season. McGovern was sensational Thursday night in his swan song, surrendering just four hits in eight shutout innings to pace Winnipeg to a 2-0 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park. He was 12-7 with a 3.85 ERA for the Goldeyes in 20 starts and one relief appearance this season, his fourth in a Winnipeg uniform. The triumph was McGovern’s 46th of his six-year stint in the American Association, moving him into third place on the league’s career win list. McGovern, 30, owns the franchise record for strikeouts (467) and was a member of the Goldeyes’ back-to-back championship teams in 2016 and 2017. GOLDEYES TRADE MCGOVERN WINNIPEG SUN – SATURDAY, AUGUST 31st The Winnipeg Goldeyes traded left-handed pitcher Kevin McGovern to the Atlantic League’s Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Friday. The transaction does not preclude McGovern from returning to Winnipeg in the future. The Atlantic League plays a 140-game schedule that carries through the end of September.
