While the stadium was originally opened in 1989, upgrades took place ahead of the Aces 2012/13 season, when the team moved from the Melbourne Showgrounds to the baseball-only venue. In the original Australian Baseball League, Melbourne Ballpark hosted the Melbourne Monarchs until 1998. After that, the stadium was called home by the Victoria Aces and used by Baseball Victoria for Baseball Victoria Summer League night games. When the Aces moved to the new ballpark, many renovations were made prior ACES 2019/20 to the season. These included: upgraded change rooms for the players, new corporate boxes at ground level, expanded dugouts, a new outfield fence (moved in 10m from the previous dimensions), re-leveled and re-seeded outfield grass and a new synthetic infield surface that allowed for metal cleats to be worn. While the infield and foul territory around the infield are synthetic, the pitchers mound, as well as the area surrounding home plate and each of the three bases is dirt. Ahead of the 2019/20 season, more upgrades were made to the ballpark as led by new owners Brett and Shaun Ralph. For the Aces first seven seasons at Melbourne Ballpark, the field did not have a warning track. In October 2019, a dirt track was & RECORDS HISTORY added in front of the outfield fence and along the grass in foul territory to the edge of the synthetic infield. Additionally, new padded seats were installed, much of the stadium was repainted and new banners were hung. Broadcasters Ed Wyatt Ed Wyatt is an American-born writer and broadcaster who has worked in Melbourne for the past 20 years. Ed’s media career began in Seattle, where he won Emmy awards for his writing on the Almost Live! comedy show that HISTORY & RECORDS HISTORY also featured Bill Nye the Science Guy and actor Joel McHale. Ed later moved to Los Angeles and helped launch Fox Sports World, the USA’s first- ever international sports network. After landing in Australia in late 1999, Ed was hired as the Sports Bureau Chief for SBS Sport in Melbourne, covering all domestic sports and hosting the nationwide
