Local Elections and Autonomy in Papua and Aceh: M itigating or Fueling Secessionism? Marcus Mietzner1 Since the 1960s, scholars of separatism have debated the impact of regional autonomy policies and general democratization measures on the strength of secessionist movements in conflict-prone areas. In this heated academic discussion, supporters and critics of political decentralization advanced highly divergent arguments and case studies. On the one hand, numerous authors have identified regional autonomy and expanded democratic rights as effective instruments to settle differences between regions with secessionist tendencies and their central governments.2 In their view, regional autonomy has the potential to address and ultimately eliminate anti-centralist sentiments in local communities by involving them more deeply in political decision-making and economic resource distribution. They point to cases such as Quebec in Canada, where the support for the separatist Parti Quebecois dropped from almost 50 percent in 1981 to only 28.3 percent in the 2007 elections.3 Other examples of successful autonomy regimes frequently mentioned by pro-autonomy academics and policy-makers include Nagaland in India, the Miskito 1 The author would like to thank Edward Aspinall, Harold Crouch, Sidney Jones, Rodd McGibbon, and an anonymous reviewer for their useful comments on an earlier version of this paper. 2 See for instance George Tsebelis, "Elite Interaction and Constitution Building in Consociational Societies," Journal of Theoretical Politics 2,1 (1990): 5-29; John McGarry and Brendan O'Leary, "Introduction: The Macro-Political Regulation of Ethnic Conflict," in The Politics of Ethnic Conflict Regulation, ed. Prophetic Social Sciences: Toward an Islamic-Based Transformative Social Sciences
Prophetic social sciences: toward an Islamic-based transformative social sciences Pradana Boy ZTF Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore; and Faculty of Islamic Studies, Muhammadiyah University of Malang E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article discusses of one of the most important type of social sciences devel- oped in Indonesian context. In the midst of debate between Western secular social sciences and Islamic social sciences, Kuntowijoyo offered a genuine yet critical formula of social sciences. The formula called Ilmu Sosial Profetik (ISP) attempted to build a bridge between secular social science and Islamic inclina- tion of social science. This article describes the position of ISP in the context of critical position of Muslim social scientists on the hegemony and domination of Orientalist tendency in studying Islam. At the end, the author offers a conclusion that ISP can actually be regarded as Islamic-based transformative science that can be further developed for a genuine indigenous theory of social sciences from the Third World. Digital Media for the Development of Banyu Lumut Tourism
DIGITAL MEDIA FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BANYU LUMUT TOURISM Prihandono Wibowo Roziana Febrianita Renitha Dwi Hapsari Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur Jalan Raya Rungkut Madya, Gunung Anyar, Surabaya 60294 e-mail: [email protected] e-mail: [email protected] e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The use of social media for development as well as the promotion of tourism destinations is being loved by the people of Indonesia, both from the government and the private sector. So this paper will explain the same thing a bit. Specifically this article will discuss the development of tourist destinations using one of the social media, namely Instagram. The tourist destinations that we are developing are in the village of Tegaren, District Tugu, Trenggalek Regency. There are three (3) tourist destinations in Tegaren, namely embungs, caves, and waterfalls. The community service that we have done is still focused on one tourist destination, namely embung. The embung in the Tegaren village is called Banyu Lumut. This paper seeks to explain the development of tourist destinations through social media. In this paper, the concept of tourism that is pro-poor tourism, tourism value chain, and productive economic empowerment will be used. The pro-poor tourism approach is used as an alternative step of ecotourism which is expected to be more engaged in labor-intensive development activities rather than capital intensive. The community service that we have done has resulted in the form of an @banyulumut Instagram account which can then be used by the Tegaren village government to promote Tegaren tourism. Keywords: tourism, social media, embung, empowerment, community service Secara spesifik tulisan ini akan membahas pengembangan destinasi wisata dengan menggunakan salah satu media sosial, yakni Instagram. -
Local Trade Networks in Maluku in the 16Th, 17Th and 18Th Centuries
CAKALELEVOL. 2, :-f0. 2 (1991), PP. LOCAL TRADE NETWORKS IN MALUKU IN THE 16TH, 17TH, AND 18TH CENTURIES LEONARD Y. ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. However, the most . effective justification for cooperation among groups in Maluku was adherence to common origin myths which established familial links with societies as far west as Butung and as far east as the Papuan islands. I The records of the Dutch East India Company housed in the State Archives in The Hague offer a useful glimpse of the operation of local trading networks in Maluku. Although concerned principally with their own economic activities in the area, the Dutch found it necessary to understand something of the nature of Indigenous exchange relationships. The information, however, never formed the basis for a report, but is scattered in various documents in the form of observations or personal experiences of Dutch officials. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area. In addition to the Malukans, there were two foreign groups who were essential to the successful integration of the local trade networks: the and the Chinese. -

Around the world, large-scale metals mining takes an enormous toll on the health of the environment and communities. Gold mining, in particular, is one of the dirtiest industries in the world. Massive open-pit mines, some measuring as much as two miles (3.2 kilometers) across, generate staggering quantities of waste—an average of 76 tons for every ounce of gold.1 In the US, metals mining is the leading contributor of toxic emissions to the environment.2 And in countries such as Ghana, Romania, and the Philippines, mining has also been associated with human rights violations, the displacement of people from their homes, and the disruption of traditional livelihoods. -
