Located on a beautiful hilltop site between the Hunter ski area and Lexington, New York, the church offers visitors an unusual opportunity to learn about traditional Ukrainian Church architecture. Imposing wood-carved basilica built entirely without nails, with hand carved and gold covered interiors. The Grazhda, which forms part of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church and Cultural Center, serves as the venue for the classical music concert series presented by the Music and Art Center of Greene County in July and August. An architectural landmark in the region, built in a traditional style typical of the Carpathian region in Ukraine, the complex is a focal point for a well-established Ukrainian summer community and draws tourists from near and far. For the past two decades, the Grazhda has accommodated varied cultural activities, such as lectures, folk art courses, concerts, art exhibitions, meetings and receptions sponsored by parishioners, the Ukrainian Artists Association, private individuals, and other organizations. For the past fifteen years, the Music and art Center of Greene County, Inc., has sponsored concerts of classical music featuring renowned performers, literary evenings, and folk art exhibitions. Karma Triyana Dharmachakra 335 Meads Mountain Road, Woodstock, New York 12498 (845) 679-5906 www.kagyu.org/index.php KARMA TRIYANA DHARMACHAKRA (KTD) is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery beautifully situated above Woodstock, New York. It is the North American monastic seat of His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. KTD is a retreat center where students study and practice Tibetan Buddhism as taught by its distinguished resident lamas, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, and Khenpo Ugyen Tenzin as well as many visiting Kagyu teachers. The monastery offers two tours each week for visitors from around the world. Programs are held on most week- ends year round, and are open to whoever is interested in discovering more about the Buddha's teachings on wisdom and compassion. The teachings range from introductory presentations, including Tibetan language and music, to instruction in advanced Tibetan Buddhist (Vajrayana) practices. The shrine building was built by lamas, staff, volunteers, and painted by a Tibetan artist-in-residence and decorated in the style and architecture of an authentic Tibetan monastery. It was completed in 1992. On the grounds are a temporary staff residence which houses a gift store, kitchen, dining room and rooms for staff and students who attend teachings and practices held at the monastery. The grounds are decorated with Tibetan prayer flags draped up the mountain, a "Dharma Path" with benches and prayer flags that lead to a parking lot and a large goldfish pond stocked by His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. Free guided tours are available to the general public on Saturdays & Sundays at 1:00 pm. Meet in the Gateway near the bookstore. Please phone before coming to be sure that the tour will occur.
