Ronald Grant Archive, via Alamy By Richard Severo Feb. 23, 2019 Stanley Donen, who directed Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling, Gene Kelly singing in the rain and a host of other sparkling moments from some of Hollywood’s greatest musicals, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 94. His son, Mark Donen, confirmed the death. Stanley Donen brought a certain charm and elegance to the silver screen in the late 1940s through the 1950s, at a time when Hollywood was soaked in glamour and the big studio movies were polished to a sheen. “For a time, Donen epitomized Hollywood style,” Tad Friend wrote in The New Yorker in 2003. Mr. Donen, he wrote, “made the world of champagne fountains and pillbox hats look enchanting, which is much harder than it sounds.” Mr. Donen worked with some of the most illustrious figures of his era: from Astaire and Kelly to Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. DIRECTOR’S NOTES In 2015, I began working on the treatment and first concept art pieces for Paradise Hills as my own kind of personal exorcism. I imagined more of a narrative feature than my arthouse short Disco Inferno – a tale that was Gothic, yet futuristic, a diverse story about universal female fears (loneliness, social rejection, hyper-control) set in our own world, a few decades into the future. I wanted to give girls and women an entertaining fairy tale that acted like a poison apple, filled with all of the visual and narrative treats that had fascinated me as a teenager: High fantasy, ‘90s shôjo manga, science fiction and costume dramas.

Charade is a nearly perfect entertainment, arguably the best imitation Hitchcock, and one of the last true movie-star movies before the studio system bit the dust. I’ve seen it at least 25 times since its 1963 release and never grow tired of its considerable charms. Charade opens with the murder of Charles Lampert, soon followed by the discovery by his widow, Reggie (Audrey Hepburn), that she knew nothing about her husband. Sometimes the need to ‘wait’ may seem uncomfortable at first but over time, practice and when given focused attention, the amount of wait time needed for each individual will become more natural. As communication partners we can wait expectantly for AAC users to respond and engage.     Choreography Inspired by Coltrane By GIA KOURLAS Published: February 19, 2010 THE choreographer Lar Lubovitch is nothing if not aware of his own predilections. “I do this very old-fashioned thing,” he said, as the lines around his eyes crinkled affably over breakfast in Chelsea. “I design the music visually. And at my age and after all the years I’ve spent doing it, I’m not embarrassed to lay claim to it.” Andrea Mohin/The New York Times Mr. Lubovitch, below, will present an all-jazz program at the Joyce Theater. Mr. Lubovitch, 66, has always been drawn to music; during his teenage years in Chicago he managed to sneak into clubs like Birdhouse and the Sutherland Lounge with friends to listen to jazz. “Even though we were under age, we would somehow pass a $20 to the guy at the door and get smuggled in and stand at the back,” he said. “I’m embarrassed to admit we really didn’t know who we were hearing. We just snuck in and listened, and it was amazing.” In honor of his company’s two-week engagement at the Joyce Theater, beginning on Tuesday night, Mr. Lubovitch has returned to his roots with a premiere, “Coltrane’s Favorite Things,” the final dance in an all-jazz program that also includes “Elemental Brubeck” and “Nature Boy: Kurt Elling.” (Another program will feature a new male duet, “Dogs of War,” set to Prokofiev.) For the Coltrane piece Mr. Lubovitch found inspiration in a 1963 live recording from a Copenhagen performance of the saxophonist’s effervescent interpretation of Richard Rodgers’s “My Favorite Things.” “I’ve known the piece of music for a long time,” he said.
