We “come back” from New Year’s (but of course we never went anywhere this year) and we hit the ground running putting together this amazing Burgundy- only auction. And indeed, if we did this right, this day is ONLY Burgundy. You asked for it, you got it. 2020 was a difficult year, but we persevered with 40 auctions $125,000,000 in wine sold ($85m of it at auction) and thousands and thousands of world records set. And we were able to keep doing what we do well, safely, and successfully. Can’t wait to show you what we’ve got in store for 2021! The lots here are simply jaw-dropping in their breadth and depth. DRC, Rousseau, Roumier, Dujac, an enormous selection of Leroy and D’Auvenay, Coche, Liger-Belair, Bachelet and more and more and more. We’ve got truly amazing provenance on some of these lots, too. 1966 DRC with the original receipt back to the Domaine? We got that. A colossal amount of wines in this auction were bought on release too. We’ve got case lots of Truchot and Engel—you don’t see those too often. We’ve got more Burgundy than I’ve seen in a while… 257 bottles of Roumier, 251 bottles of Rousseau, 253 bottles of DRC, and 35 bottles of d’Auvenay, which has to be a reasonably high per- centage of annual production… Of course the one thing we don’t have this year is the opportunity to get together and enjoy a glass of wine during the auction! Soon enough though, soon enough, for my own sanity! I’ve been cooped up like everyone else, training my 4 year old on how to tell the difference between a Bordeaux and a claret, and other fun parlor tricks which will serve her well in college. I hope everyone out there is remaining safe, and drinking well. If you’re like me, your cellar has been depleted at an astonishing rate over the winter. Don’t worry—we can help you to replenish. Cheers, Charles SOMETHING FOR EVERY WINE LOVER (LOTS 593-600 & 1-10) Grand Cru Burgundy? Check. Take your pick, all the bases are covered with this consignment. BURGUNDY ARMAND ROUSSEAU One will get little argument to the assertion that Domaine Armand Rousseau is the finest estate in Gevrey-Chambertin... The vintages of the 1980s and 1990s at Domaine Rousseau have produced one of the greatest runs of profound Burgundy ever witnessed by any estate in the region, with the domaine producing legendary efforts in the widely recognized great years of the span from 1985 to 1999. Their two flagship bottlings of Chambertin and Chambertin “Clos de Bèze” have always ranked amongst the top dozen wines to be found in these vintages. Of the two Grand Crus at the pinnacle of the brilliant portfolio of Rousseau wines, the Chambertin “Clos de Bèze” tends to be the more exotic and spicy of the two wines, with glorious fruit tones of black cherry, plum, blood orange often augmented by notes of Gevrey’s grilled meat, chocolate and exotic spices. The Chambertin is typically the slightly slower wine to unfold, with a more understated profile of plum, red cherry and strawberry, coupled with notes of cocoa powder, coffee, grilled meats and violets… impeccably balanced, tangy and never come across as over-oaked. They are amongst the very greatest red wines to be found in the world.
