If there could be a better complement to the Estate of Tawfiq Khoury, it’s this auction!

This sale begins with rare Faiveley Musigny, Rousseau Clos de Beze, and Rouget Cros Parantoux—and it only gets better from there.

There’s rare 37 year old Brora, from one of Scotland’s shuttered distilleries. There’s a stunning collection of Liger Belair and Rousseau, all from a member of the wine trade and bought on release and stored professionally. There’s gorgeous and pristine 1999 DRC La Tache—a wine you can’t have enough of.

Lot 430 brings one of the most amazing collections in this sale, from a friend of our very own Fritz Hatton (read his cellar intro for a jealousy-inducing reminiscence of din- ing with the consignor). The mature bottles of Dujac and eye-popping Jayer are some- thing to behold. Keep turning the pages for Roumier and Ponsot, too. Amazing wines from top vintages in great condition. What more can you ask for?

Lot 595 begins a collection with absolutely perfect provenance. The Lafite, as well as the Yquem and other wines in this collection were recently Chateau direct. For those that missed out in our 2019 Chateau-direct sale, this is a great opportunity!

Lastly I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out Pioneers V. This cellar does have an end in sight, so I’d advise you to bid now should you wish to pick up some Cheval Blanc from this amazing single cellar.

Finally, something new in 2021, the market is on such a tear that we decided to add a July auction. After that though, it’s the fall, and by that time we hope to be seeing you in person. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with me or my team of Specialists around the world with any questions you may have!

See you soon,

Jeff

Besides making some of the most profound wines of Burgundy, the Faiveley family been important in promoting the wines of Burgundy, with Georges Faiveley co-founding the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in 1934.

Faiveley wines are famously among the most long- lived of all Burgundies, with tasters reporting that wines approaching the century mark remain profound.

BURGUNDY

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti The domaine is known for picking very late, sometimes, as in 1978, later than any other producers. They prune endlessly, make many passes through the vineyards at harvest and sort grapes rigorously both in the vineyard and at the winery. Average age of the vines is around thirty-five to forty-five years with yields typically around thirty hl/ha. The wines are aged in new French oak casks for approximately twenty months. There is usually only one racking and since 1985 the wines from all casks in each cru have been blended together prior to bottling to reduce bottle variation. Recently they have been moving towards biodynamic viticultural practices. Like many of the region’s leading growers they have seen concrete evidence of soil and vine health improvement. It’s hard to imagine that these wines could get better, but that is what separates them from the rest of the pack: an unrelenting pursuit for perfection in the Pinot Noir grape. In addition to the majestic reds, a white is also produced from a plot in Montrachet.

(LOTS 430-515)

Memories! I have enjoyed wines from the cellar of this veteran collector for over two decades. Most recently a small group of friends and I joined him in his cellar to taste a complete vertical of Echézeaux Jayer 1980- 1990. Don’t expect that to happen again! The collector in question has been “at it” since the 1970s, and was a regular visitor to Burgundy in the 1980s and 1990s. He and two buddies lunched with Jacques Seysses after tasting the 1985 Dujacs in barrel. One of them stepped aside to negotiate a purchase with Seysses, and returned to announce Seysses’ agreement to sell the three gentlemen—50 cases! Our friend was an early convert to the wines of Henri Jayer, and a number of important examples—purchased on release—are offered here. The amazing Burgundies in this consignment provide a window to avid collecting of the finest Burgundies as it was happening three and four decades ago.

All wines have been kept in carefully maintained temperature-controlled home and commercial storage since purchase. The wines of Bond and Harlan were purchased directly from the wineries by subscription.

He always spoke of the importance of treating the wine gently during the fermentation and elevage process, which he likened to “moving a sleeping baby who must be carried to its bed from the sofa upon which it has fallen asleep.” He also was a proponent of one hundred percent new oak for his wines. This was the one precept of his winemaking technique that cannot be described as traditional, and it is the one most often cited by modern winemakers when they seek to sprinkle a little of the “fairy dust” of Jayer inspiration on their own wines. There is little doubt that the concept that a Grand Cru “deserves to be raised in one hundred percent new oak” that is often heard in Burgundy these days can be traced back to Henri Jayer and his success with new wood. However, one of the interesting things I have always found about Henri Jayer’s wines was that I have never tasted one that was over-oaked.

(LOTS 595-649)

This collection comes directly from professional, temperature and humidity- controlled wine storage on the West Coast. It rested in professional storage until the consignors decided to offer it in this auction, and it was removed and shipped refrigerated to Zachys warehouse in White Plains. The Lafite Rothschild, including the older bottles have perfect provenance—and we at Zachys should know Lafite provenance, having offered a collection direct from the Château in 2019! The other Bordeaux and Yquem were also in this storied collection. In other words, there is no better provenance; for all intents and purposes, these are Château direct. The California wine was purchased from the mailing lists of the respective wineries— they are being sold simply to refocus and diversify the collection!

What’s the secret to building a cellar? Luck? Charm? That ‘je ne sais quoi” of being in the right place at the right time? The kind of foresight that allows you to buy amazon at $4/share? If you ask our consignor, he’ll tell you in his humble way there’s no magic to his method. In the course of building and enjoying one of the greatest cellars on the West Coast, this consignor built a system of values. Finding a passion for wine at a young age allowed him to seek out mentors who opened great bottles with him while he was forming his taste. He learned to trust his own palate when making decisions, and to then buy deeply. He took chances on up-and-coming producers and took the time to travel to regions for in depth study. Early on, the value of relationships with key trade became apparently and abiding friendships were born. And above all, maintain a cold cellar. The wines listed for sale below need little introduction, ranging from the rarest of Grands Crus to stunning large formats from our domestic Gold Coast of California. The majority of European wines were purchased directly in Europe and imported privately with Adventures in Wine. The home cellar where these wines enjoyed a long slumber is kept at a constant 48-degree temperature with 63% humidity. This is our third offering from this kind consignor and have received nothing but glowing reviews for our global pool of drinkers. Bid with confidence!
