    ANALYSIS Anna Christie (1921) Eugene O’Neill (1888-1953) “Anna Christie…by no means reveals the greatest depth and furthest range of O’Neill’s powers and ambitions. But if it lacks the scope of several of its author’s later works, it has the merit of comparative compactness; and if it does not probe as deeply into human nature, it is also free from their more troublesome obscurities, their schematization of psychological forces, and their tragic straining. A fairly simple human drama, it provides emotions more or less readily accessible to the reader. Its pungently colloquial speech and its seedy heroine represent the early portion of O’Neill’s career, when he rooted the American theatre in naturalism. The play also suggests some of the characteristics of his later writing— namely, his poetic vein, present here in his feeling for the sea, his concern with obsessed characters, and his saturnine sense of fatality in human experience. Anna Christie grew out of an earlier written play, Chris or Christopherson, produced unsuccessfully and withdrawn during its tryout tour. As Barrett H. Clark, O’Neill’s biographer, explains, ‘In its final version Anna Christie is a play about a woman. It was in the beginning a play about the woman’s father.’ One objection that has been raised is that the play suffers from this shift in emphasis. Another is that Anna’s story bears too much resemblance to the fallen-woman drama we associate with oldfashioned sentimental plays. Critics have also questioned the ‘happy ending’ and suspected O’Neill of compromising the integrity of his play in the manner of Henry Arthur Jones and other pseudo modernists.

Tiers of narrow, steel bunks, three deep, on all sides. An entrance in rear. Benches on the floor before the bunks. The room is crowded with men, shouting, cursing, laughing, singing—a confused, inchoate uproar swelling into a sort of unity, a meaning—the bewildered, furious, baffled defiance of a beast in a cage. Nearly all the men are drunk. Many bottles are passed from hand to hand. All are dressed in dungaree pants, heavy ugly shoes. Some wear singlets, but the majority are stripped to the waist. The treatment of this scene, or of any other scene in the play, should by no means be naturalistic. The effect sought after is a cramped space in the bowels of a ship, imprisoned by white steel. The lines of bunks, the uprights supporting them, cross each other like the steel framework of a cage. The ceiling crushes down upon the men's heads. They cannot stand upright. This accentuates the natural stooping posture which shovelling coal and the resultant over-development of back and shoulder muscles have given them.

INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Literature is in part and a binding source of beauty and entertainment for all civilized men, and in part a record of the ideas and customs, the special visions and feelings of the people who created it. Literature is divided into three major genres like, poetry, novel, and drama. Different from poetry and novel, drama is more realistic in a way to show the portrait of human daily life. Through a character’s speeches and movements, audience will be able to feel or interpret the meaning that the actor or actress trying to deliver. I choose drama for my thesis because; I think drama is just like a piece of our daily life that can really show human problems or in other words drama is performance human life which are involved with tragedy, happiness, love, etc. No consensus exists about the exact date of the birth of drama but, according to most authorities, it originated in Greece over 2500 years ago as an outgrowth of the worship of the god Dionysus. Drama itself comes from a Greek word meaning “a thing that is done” Drama own set of customs, rituals, and rules which have evolved over many countries (Gwynn, 1982, p 2) like prose fiction, utilize plot and characters, drama develops a theme, arouses emotion or appeals to humor….” (Perrine, 1983, p 837). However, I find interesting aspect in drama. The interaction / dialog between the characters help me understand the meaning and make it easier for me to feel the emotion that the character has.

    EUGENE O’NEILL EUGENE O’NEILL ANNA CHRISTIE SUMMARY : nna Christie is a play in four acts by Eugene O'Neill. It made its Broadway debut at the AVanderbilt Theatre on November 2, 1921. O'Neill received the 1922 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his work. It is the story of a former prostitute who falls in love, but runs into difficulty in turning her life around. The play opens in Johnny-The-Priest’s saloon in New York City, one afternoon in the fall. Barge captain Chris Christopherson receives a letter from Anna, his daughter, who writes that she is coming to see him. Chris explains that he hasn’t seen her since she was five and lived in Sweden. Since he was a sailor who rarely saw his family, Anna’s mother brought her to Minnesota to live with her cousins on a farm. When her mother died, she stayed on. Chris insists that it was “better Anna live on farm, den she don’t know dat ole davil, sea, she don’t know fa’der like me.” When Chris leaves to get food, Anna appears in the bar, plainly showing all the outward evidences of belonging to the world’s oldest profession.” She immediately demands of the bartender, “Gimme a whisky — ginger ale on the side. And don’t be stingy, baby.” As she drinks, she relates details of her past to Marthy, the woman who has been staying on the barge with Chris. Anna explains that when the police raided the house where she worked in Saint Paul, she was thrown in jail, and then she was sent to the hospital.

Prohlašuji, že v souladu s § 47b zákona č. 111/1998 Sb. v platném znění souhlasím se zveřejněním své bakalářské práce, a to v nezkrácené podobě elektronickou cestou ve veřejně přístupné části databáze STAG provozované Jihočeskou univerzitou v Českých Budějovicích na jejích internetových stránkách, a to se zachováním mého autorského práva k odevzdanému textu této kvalifikační práce.
