The Voice of Beth El Congregation 5 Lights of Beth El DID YOU KNOW… There is an idea that when the Temple was defi led by the Seleucid troops, it was right before the Festival of Sukkot, and so the people were not able to celebrate that holiday. When the revolt succeeded and the Maccabees rededicated the Temple, they did so and had Sukkot late. From II Maccabees 10: 6-8 “They kept eight festival days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of Tabernacles, remembering how, not long before at the time of the fest of Tabernacles, they had been living in the mountains and caverns like wild beasts. Then, carrying branches, leafy boughs and palms (lulav), they offered hymns to Him who had brought the cleansing of His own Holy Place to a happy outcome. They also decreed by public edict, ratifi ed by vote, that the whole Jewish nation should celebrate those same days every year.” Indeed, Sukkot and Hanukkah are both 8 days long, and we recite a full hallel on both Sukkot and Hanukkah. So, when you celebrate Hanukkah this year, if you want to put a lulav or an etrog next to your hanukkiah, it would not be such a weird thing do to. -Ben Kreshtool, Ritual Director

HOW TO LIGHT THE HANUKKIAH There is a debate in the Talmud between the houses of Hillel & Shammai about how one should kindle the Hanukkah lights. Beit Shammai argues that one should start lighting 8 lights and decrease by one each night as that is how the sacrifi ces were offered on Sukkot (see above), while Beit Hillel argues that you should increase with a new light each night because we increase in holiness. The halacha (Jewish law) goes according to Hillel and we light a new candle each night of Hanukkah. So how do you do this? Place your hanukkiah on the table in front of a window and stand facing the hanukkiah with your back to the window. Place the candles from right to left and when it’s time to light the candles, light the shamash fi rst and recite the blessings below. Once the blessings have been recited use the shamash to light the other candles from left to right, always starting with the newest candle.
