The To- remarkable is the fact that all the offerings ic meaning that each tribe brought was different in each case. Each tribe brought its own distinctive character and spiritual message, thus contributing to the whole with its own separate fl avor. Therefore, it was necessary that each leader offer his offering on a separate day in order to high- light the uniqueness of his gift, as the To- rah says, “One leader each day, one leader each day.” (ib. 11) Thus, we see that in spite

When people insist on “being themselves” or separating themselves from a community, this attitude may bring many calamities

of the fact that the offerings appear to be the same, they are very different from each other, and they require the separate- ness of each individual day. The singulari- ty and unique characteristics of each tribe are thus protected and accentuated. This concept of singular attention and differentiation is noted in many other contexts, such as the individual fl ags of each tribe, the different colors associat- ed with each, the separate path through which they crossed the Red Sea, and many other instances. However, this idea seems contradicted by the manner in which the leaders traveled to the Tabernacle. “They brought their offering…six covered wag- ons and twelve oxen – a wagon for each of two leaders and an ox for each…” (ib. 3). If the leaders were given each a separate day in order to give emphasis to the singu- larity of their offerings and the differing meaning that each tribe brought with it, then why did they have to travel in groups of twos? If the purpose was to highlight their individuality, why not give each a separate wagon as well? S’forno (Rome and Bologna, 1470-1550) explains that the purpose of making them travel in groups was to demonstrate their friendship and fraternity. By forcing them to travel together, the leaders displayed

The Torah dedicates 72 verses vidualism may trump the ideals of the community at large. That’s precisely the reason Haman tried to reduce the Jewish people to a number by placing a dollar value on their lives. But Haman’s wife disabused him of the notion that Jews can be so limited—“If Mordechai is a Jew you will not be able to conquer him, because the Jewish people are compared to the stars and the dust”— they cannot be counted and they will not be limited (Esther 6:13 and Rashi ad loc.). Shavuos expresses the alignment of the “me” and the “we.” There is a deliber- ate link between Bamidbar and Shavu- os (see Megillah 31b and Tosfos ad loc.; Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 428:4; Shabbos Inbox, Queens Jewish Link, Vol. II No. 10), which means that Bamidbar is usually read just prior to Shavuos, ex- cept after leap years (like this past year), when Naso is read prior to Shavuos. The individuality encouraged by the Torah is something to be most grateful for. As Rav Yosef was wont to say about Shavuos, “If not for [the day when we received the Torah], how many Yosefs there would be in the market” (Pesa- chim 68b). The statement seems a bit odd because there must have been plen- ty of people named Yosi in the market notwithstanding the Torah. Perhaps what Rav Yosef meant was that, without the Torah, his individuality would have found no proper outlet and would have been squelched. It was only through the Torah, with its countless paths towards the ultimate goal, that he was able to distinguish himself from the plethora of other Yosefs in the market. But such individuality must be chan- neled within the communal context of serving the Creator, lest it morph from individuality to individualism. R’ Uri of Strelisk noted that each Jew is repre- sented by a different letter in the Torah. A Torah missing even one letter—one Jew—is invalidated, which shows the unique value of the community. Yet the Torah also is invalidated if any two letters become so close that they join, which teaches us to embrace individu- ality (see also Darash Moshe, Shavuos). The Jewish people experienced the alignment of the individual and the community when receiving the Torah because they were united in purpose. Millions of Jewish people. 600,000 adult men. 12 distinct tribes. Receiving the Torah “like one man, with one heart” (Shemos 19:2 and Rashi ad loc.) while retaining their individu- ality? Priceless.

have been popes that have been sin- cere in their attempts at rapproche- ment with the Jewish People. One such pope was Pope John XXIII, who changed Vatican doctrine in a major way by convening Vatican Council II. Pope John XXIII may well have been assassinated for his revolutionary stand towards the Jewish People. He was recently declared a Saint by Pope Francis.

Why the need to appease the Vatican is beyond the mind’s reach

A personal story about Pope John XXIII comes to mind. In 1962, a re- ligious Jewish man from Queens whose name was Oscar Goldman, whom I spent several hours inter- viewing before he passed away, hap- pened to meet Pope John XXIII. Not too many Jews had a chance to meet with a pope in those days. Mr. Gold- man told me that Pope John XXIII was genuine and wanted a true rap- prochement with the Jewish People. He gave Mr. Goldman a chance to see what the Vatican had accumulat- ed over 2000 years from the Jewish People. It was a virtual treasure trove of artifacts, many from the Second Temple. Mr. Goldman told me that the collection was in a room in the “basement” of the Basilica. I have tried in vain for over 25 years to fi nd out more about this “treasure trove.” I have received only static and double-talk about its exis- tence. If a true rapprochement is to be achieved, the Vatican (as I believe Pope John XXIII was trying to do) must open up its vast collection of Judaica, Hebraica, manuscripts, and Temple artifacts, and not just pay lip service to the State of Israel.

With this Chaz- al in mind, Bais Yaakov of Queens (BYQ) jump-started a school-wide all- encom- passing midos program, Positive Behavior Support Is the Initiative (PBIS) –HEART to HEART. The breakout for the program was presented in front of the entire stu- dent body and faculty in the gym on Mon- day, May 19. Rabbi Mordechai Gewirtz, Dean, greeted everyone. He informed the students about the exciting new program that focuses on bein adam l’chaveiro. He noted that teachers met with Mrs. Zehava Somerstein (Limudei Kodesh Principal), Mrs. Sarah Bergman (General Studies Prin- cipal), and Mrs. Karen Reisbaum (Assistant General Studies Principal) many times to create this program. The goal is expressing in actions that we care about one another in a special way. Rabbi Gewirtz enumerated the var- ious areas of focus, including behavior in the hallways. He declared that the pro- gram will begin now and continue into the next school year. The acronym for HEART is spelled out in the song. What a fi tting time of year for this program to begin, right after Lag BaO- mer, as we prepare to receive the Torah. Mrs. Leah Goldstein, who spearheaded the program, remarked on the warm invit- ing atmosphere at BYQ. She declared that the objective of this program is to instill in the students that BYQ is a place where everyone cares about each other. A large puffy pink heart in the front hallway is part of the positive incentives program. Mrs. Goldstein thanked Ms. Eliana Platovsky who created the logo, brochure, and video. The passion and enthusiasm from the administration and teachers ignited the students. There was a short video pre- sentation of the students demonstrating proper derech eretz in the hallway. This was followed by the entire seventh grade singing and then teaching all the students the new BYQ to HEART catchy song com- plete with motions. The song was magic. No one could resist the strong feelings and ideals it expresses, and it is already making a tremendous impact on the stu- dents and faculty and the whole commu- nity as it echoes in the hallways and in the hearts of all the students and teachers. Excerpts from the song: HEART, you plus me equals we; Heart to heart, friend to friend, in BYQ HEART – be the best that you can be, Catch the BY spirit – can you feel it too? Honesty, Empathy, Attitude, Respect, and Trust – Let the feelings circulate with hearts as one. Honesty, Empathy, Attitude, Respect, and Trust – Put your whole heart in it and let’s pump it up!
