72 n A Guide to Jewish Wisconsin BALAAM’S ASS Bronze • 2012 • four feet tall Sculptor RICHARD EDELMAN Balaam rode on his ass which ceased moving when he saw an angel of the Lord. Balaam beat his ass unmercifully until the ass was miraculously given the power of speech and then complained of his abuse by Balaam upon which revelation, Balaam was given to see the angel and repented of all his ill doing.

Let’s hope in our turbulent times that we never hold down our fellow human beings who give voice to their legitimate grievances. Richard Edelman
