STRAN 22 VSEBINA JUNIJ 2003 44 Razburljivo življenje ročnih računalnikov Z majhnimi žepnimi napravami je dobilo mobilno računalništvo v zadnjih letih povsem nov zagon. Toda za razliko od mobilnih telefonov, ki so povsem preplavili svet, ročni računalniki še niso dosegli tolikšne kritične mase. Prodaja namreč zaostaja za pričakovanji, izdelovalcev in novih modelov pa je vendarle vse več. Močna je tudi konkurenca zmogljivejših mobilnih telefonov, ki po funkcijah in lastnostih pogosto močno spominjajo na ročne računalnike – prav zato smo v pregled uvrstili tudi te. Brez dvoma si bodo v prihodnje izdelovalci prizadevali, da v svojih sistemih ponudijo najrazličnejše dodatke, od digitalnih fotoaparatov in biometričnih naprav do drugih posebnosti, ki pa resnici na ljubo niso najbolj nujni dodatki – vendar so močan magnet za kupce. Pri sistemih, ki jih izdelovalci namenjajo predvsem poslovnim uporabnikom, lahko pričakujemo še več rešitev za povezovanje s poslovnimi informacijskimi sistemi, tako na strojni kot programski ravni. Čeprav sta pri ročnih računalnikih velikost in teža pomembni, ne moremo pričakovati, da se bodo te naprave še naprej manjšale in tanjšale – razlog je v velikosti zaslonov in velikosti akumulatorja. Za oboje velja nekakšna minimalna velikost, s katero jih še štejemo za uporabne. Novi modeli se kar vrstijo, družine izdelkov se menjajo vsakih šest mesecev, izdelovalci oziroma dva največja izdelovalca pa neprestano tekmujejo med seboj, kateri bo predstavil grafični procesor, ki bo konkurenco pustil daleč zadaj. Podjetji ATI in nVidia že kar nekaj let kraljujeta med izdelovalci grafičnih procesorjev in redki konkurenti jima s svojimi izdelki tako po tržnem deležu kot po zmogljivostih izdelkov ne sežejo niti do kolen. Kljub temu je na trgu tudi nekaj novosti drugih izdelovalcev, nekateri izdelovalci, ki so v preteklosti precej obljubljali, pa so se umaknili s tega trga. Alan Curtis Kay The Mac OS X operating system represents a rather successful coming together of paradigms, ideologies, and technologies that have often resisted each other in the past. A good example is the cordial relationship that exists between the command-line and graphical interfaces in Mac OS X. The system is a result of the trials and tribulations of Apple and NeXT, as well as their user and developer communities. Mac OS X exemplifies how a capable system can result from the direct or indirect efforts of corporations, academic and research communities, the Open Source and Free Software movements, and, of course, individuals. Apple has been around since 1976, and many accounts of its history have been told. If the story of Apple as a company is fascinating, so is the technical history of Apple's operating systems. In this chapter,[1] we will trace the history of Mac OS X, discussing several technologies whose confluence eventually led to the modern-day Apple operating system.
