Symmons & Allen Vintners C H Champagne A Like the Melton Mowbray pork pie or Roquefort cheese, Champagne has gained The Champagne region of France is one of the most M Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, and can only be produced in the heavily praised wine regions on Earth. Champagne region in northern France. Although the Americans still continue to use the P term “Champagne”, they, at least, have to clearly indicate the fizzy wine’s true geographical origin! A Unexpectedly for a wine that is quintessentially light and white, champagne is made from predominantly black grapes. Less than 30 per cent of Champagne's vineyards are light-skinned Chardonnay, the white burgundy grape. The red burgundy grape Pinot Noir is planted on almost 40 per cent of Champagne's infertile vineyard soils. The region's third main variety, with about a third of the vineyard, is Pinot Meunier, a fruitier, earlier-maturing G relative of Pinot Noir. N The essence of Champagne is, of course, the sparkle. And this sparkle derives from a secondary fermentation which takes place in the reinforced bottles that are so familiar, where the combination of the base wines (the blend of wines from the different grapes), sugar and yeast give off the E perfect amount of carbon dioxide. Although the number of renowned Champagne houses is relatively few, the grapes are in fact grown by thousands of smallholders. It is this diversity of production that the big houses argue forms the basis of the consistently good champagne. Most champagne is Non-Vintage (NV), with the grapes coming from more than one year’s harvest. A vintage champagne takes double the time to produce, and can only be made in years of exceptional quality. It also has the effect of those quality grapes being unavailable for blending with previous and future years’ harvests to maintain quality standards year in year out. We are delighted to present our exclusive, award-winning Champagne, Jules Feraud and Jules Feraud Rosé. In 2010, this wine beat all the major Champagne houses to win the title “Best in Class” at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, and we are rightly proud of that achievement. The sun hits the dark slate floor almost vertically and heats up not only the vines but also the animals and plants there. However, the warmth and dryness can cause problems for many organisms, which is why a special kind of flora and fauna has established itself in the vineyards, one that has been able to adapt to the extreme conditions there. No wonder, therefore, that the spectrum of species has an almost Mediterranean feel to it and is, for that reason, of a kind rarely seen in Germany. This memory card game enables you to playfully learn about wall lizards, white stonecrop, etc. All the photos were taken in the local vineyards in the habitats concerned. So, with a bit of patience and luck, you will be able to track down all the plants and animals in the Moselle region yourself. Patience and intuition are also required when you play memory.

sustainability Article Impact of Climate Change on Wine Tourism: An Approach through Social Media Data Veronica Alampi Sottini, Elena Barbierato , Iacopo Bernetti * and Irene Capecchi DAGRI, Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Forestry, University of Florence, Piazzale delle Cascine, 18-50144 Firenze, FI, Italy; veronica.alampi@unifi.it (V.A.S.); elena.barbierato@unifi.it (E.B.); irene.capecchi@unifi.it (I.C.) * Correspondence: iacopo.bernetti@unifi.it Abstract: Wine tourism is one of the best opportunities for rural development, but because it is partially exposed to climatic conditions, it is a climate-vulnerable tourism activity. However, an understanding of the potential impacts of global climate change on this popular activity remains limited. This study proposes a new methodology that combines current daily gridded climate data from the E-OBS project with big spatiotemporal data from the Flickr photo-sharing platform through a generalized additive model This methodology was implemented to study the potential impacts on tourism flows due to climate change and to make predictions about the future using data from the CMIP5 project. We applied the methodology to 5 European wine tourism regions: Alsace (FR), Chianti (IT), La Rioja (SP), Langhe-Monferrato (IT), and Moselle (DE). Results show an increased probability of presence and increased deseasonalization of tourism in all study areas and an anticipation of peak presence from summer to spring in three of the five regions. We believe that these results can be useful for public and private stakeholders to adapt the offer of wine tourism services to changes in demand and to direct the organization of events such as festivals and thematic tours.
