Natural Gas in China's Power Sector
December 2020 Natural gas in China’s power sector: Challenges and the road ahead China’s pledge to peak its emissions before 2030 suggests that decarbonization of its coal-dominant power sector will be key to fulfilling this goal. Natural gas emits around 50 per cent less greenhouse gases than coal when used in electricity generation.1 With the rapid deployment of variable renewables, gas-fired power plants could also enhance the flexibility of the power system and boost renewables integration. However, the development of natural gas in China’s power sector has been slow, with installed gas-fired capacity standing at 97 GW by October 2020 out of 2,100 GW total installed generating capacity, according to the latest data by the China Electricity Council.2 This falls short of the target of 110 GW by 2020, set out in the 13th Five Year plan (2016–2020). Gas-fired generation only accounted for 3.2 per cent of China’s total power production in 2019, significantly below coal’s share of 62 per cent. Average running hours were 2,646 last year, indicating that gas-fired power plants have been underutilized. This analysis discusses the latest developments in China’s gas-fired power generation, the main challenges, and the road ahead both in the context of the upcoming 14th Five-Year Plan and the recently announced 2060 carbon neutrality goal. Expensive imported gas, costly turbine technology, and the lack of fully competitive electricity markets have been the main obstacles limiting the role of natural gas in China’s power sector. -

Country Report for the Preparation of the First Report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China June 2003 Beijing CONTENTS Executive Summary Biological diversity is the basis for the existence and development of human society and has aroused the increasing great attention of international society. In June 1992, more than 150 countries including China had jointly signed the "Pact of Biological Diversity". Domestic animal genetic resources are an important component of biological diversity, precious resources formed through long-term evolution, and also the closest and most direct part of relation with human beings. Therefore, in order to realize a sustainable, stable and high-efficient animal production, it is of great significance to meet even higher demand for animal and poultry product varieties and quality by human society, strengthen conservation, and effective, rational and sustainable utilization of animal and poultry genetic resources. The "Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") was compiled in accordance with the requirements of the "World Status of Animal Genetic Resource " compiled by the FAO. The Ministry of Agriculture" (MOA) has attached great importance to the compilation of the Report, organized nearly 20 experts from administrative, technical extension, research institutes and universities to participate in the compilation team. In 1999, the first meeting of the compilation staff members had been held in the National Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Service, discussed on the compilation outline and division of labor in the Report compilation, and smoothly fulfilled the tasks to each of the compilers. -

Silencing Complaints Chinese Human Rights Defenders March 11, 2008 Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) Web: http://crd-net.org/ Email: [email protected] One World, One Dream: Universal Human Rights Silencing Complaints: Human Rights Abuses Against Petitioners in China A report by Chinese Human Rights Defenders In its Special Series on Human Rights and the Olympics Abstract As China prepares to host the Olympics, this report finds that illegal interception and arbitrary detention of petitioners bringing grievances to higher authorities have become more systematic and extensive, especially in the host city of the Olympic Games, Beijing. ―The most repressive mechanisms are now being employed to block the steady stream of petitioners from registering their grievances in Beijing. The Chinese government wants to erase the image of people protesting in front of government buildings, as it would ruin the meticulously cultivated impression of a contented, modern, prosperous China welcoming the world to the Olympics this summer,‖ said Liu Debo,1 who participated in the investigations and research for this report. Petitioners, officially estimated to be 10 million, are amongst those most vulnerable to human rights abuses in China today. As they bring complaints about lower levels of government to higher authorities, they face harassment and retaliation. Officially, the Chinese government encourages petitions and has an extensive governmental bureaucracy to handle them. In practice, however, officials at all levels of government have a vested interest in preventing petitioners from speaking up about the mistreatment and injustices they have suffered. The Chinese government has developed a complex extra-legal system to intercept, confine, and punish petitioners in order to control and silence them, often employing brutal means such as assault, surveillance, harassment of family members, kidnapping, and incarceration in secret detention centers, psychiatric institutions and Re-education through Labor camps. -

Based on the sixth population census data at township level, this article analyzes the population distribution of Henan province, China by the geological statistics method. The result shows that population distribution of Henan province could be divided into three types: low density in mountain areas, medium density in plain areas, and high density in urban regions. The variation functions have similar trends in the four directions of E-W, N-S, NE-SW, and NW-SE. When the distance is over 80km, the anisotropy enhances. The exponential model has the best fitting effect for the variation function. The interpolation results represent the gradient change process of population density intuitively. Terrain condition is the basic factor influencing on the population spatial pattern. High population density in urban regions are the outcomes of mutual effects between the superior geographical condition and socioeconomic development. Introduction Population distribution is a reflection of the human-earth relationship in a special space-time background. Understanding the population distribution and what determines this distribution is fundamental to understanding the relationships between humans and the environment [1]. With the advancement of modern space technology and geographic information processing technology, the study on Chinese population distribution has experienced from qualitative analysis and simple quantitative to spatial-temporal modeling [2]-[4]. -

From "Running Man" to "Mission X": Variety Shows as Cultural Representation of Local Identities Nurul Laili Nadhifah, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia The Asian Conference on Media, Communication & Film 2018 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Running Man, as one of Korean successful variety shows, never fails to advertise parts of Korean culture like food, K-Pop, cultural values, traditional games, history, even historical sites. With quite a huge amount of fans not only from South Korea but also from other countries as well, Running Man also occasionally encourages interactions between the hosts and their fans in some games, indirectly introducing Korean culture to all over the world, resulting in the increase of consumption on Korean culture’s products. This reality show concept is, then, adapted into Indonesian variety show called Mission X. Quite different from Running Man, Mission X has its own ways in introducing Indonesia and its culture. This study aims to analyze the way Running Man and Mission X represent themselves as the platforms of advertising their local identities by applying Fiske’s vertical intertextuality and cultural identity theories. Drawing on data collected from the shows as the main texts and SNS as secondary texts, while data of fans’ reactions are gathered by doing random interview online. This research, through comparative studies, intents to explain the similarities and differences of cultural representations shown on those shows. The findings show different aspects of local culture displayed by those variety shows caused different methods of representing them. While Running Man introducing different aspects and values of culture like food or history through games and certain themes, Mission X tends to introduce cultural aspects more through display of setting. -

Puzio Sir Winston Churchill Secondary 0227 May 2015 ii Abstract China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (19661976) was a ten year sociopolitical movement that not only changed many social aspects of life but drew emphasis to a unique form of art visual propaganda. Cultural Revolution propaganda posters are visually impacting both in terms of colour use and composition, and convey strong political messages and nationalism. Due to these aspects, propaganda posters hold irreplaceable importance in the study of gender equality and the portrayal of women during the Cultural Revolution. The essay aims to analyze the message of the propaganda posters, and to what extent were they effective. The essay is composed of four major components, including historical context, method, analysis and conclusion. 208 posters within the Cultural Revolution time frame were taken from collector websites in the randomized order they appeared. The posters were then analyzed for their portrayal of women in Cultural Revolution propaganda posters with the use of visual analysis, numerical analysis and historical evidence. The analysis found three important connections between the female image and the Cultural Revolution. Firstly, the existence of women in the Cultural Revolution posters was not about gender equality, but to serve the CCP’s socialist ideological campaigns and industrial production needs. Secondly, this political drive behind the messages caused the portrayal of genders to become form of gender neutralization that favoured masculinization. Thirdly, the reduction genders inequality due to traditional confines prompted the loss of social diversity and exposed women to a new form of marginalization, where any aspects of femininity was ostracized. -
