Toen ik hem vroeg wat hij later wilde worden en hij geen zin had die open deur in te trappen wilde hij een grap maken door mij hetzelfde te vragen…. Papa, wat wil jij later worden als je groot bent? Maar hij versprak zich en vroeg…. Papa, wat wil jij later worden als je dood bent? Daar werd voor mij 'Kern' geboren. De schoonheid van de vergissing…wat een vraag om te stellen…veel interessanter dan de oorspronkelijke vraag.” Deze plaat heeft als thema liefde, vriendschap, de schoonheid van het ouder worden en de tijd waarin we op dit moment leven. Ontroerend, oprecht en puur. Morgen in huis! Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Wrong Creatures CD/2LP 'Wrong Creatures' is het achtste album van deze garage rockers. De vorige zeven platen waren stuk voor stuk een schot in de roos, maar mijn voorkeur bleef wel uitgaan naar de eerste albums. Gelukkig heeft deze plaat de sound van de eerdere platen en dus minder gepolijst dan de vorige twee albums. Eerste single 'Little Thing Gone Wild' klinkt catchy, rauw, stuwend en als een track waar live het dak van afknalt. Niet iedere track heeft dezelfde stevigheid als de single, daardoor is 'Wrong Creatues' misschien wel hun meest diverse album ooit. Ze hebben zichzelf weer teruggevonden, wat heerlijk! Lekkere plaat! Glen Hansard – Between Two Shores CD/LP Glen Hansard, geboren in Ierland en frontman van de band The Frames. The Frames was een band met veel fans maar langszamerhand is de solo-carriere van Glen Hansard de band, qua populairiteit, aan het inhalen. Niet zo gek ook aangezien het laatse (en fantastische) studioabum van The Frames 'The Cost' alweer twaalf jaar oud is. Glen zit niet stil en komt nu met zijn derde solo-album. Prachtige ingetogen semi-akoestische nummers en dat in combinatie met zijn fantastische stem, puurheid en intensiteit maakt Glen Hansard (voor mij) één van de beste singer-songwriters van deze tijd. Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa – Black Coffee CD/2LP Vier jaar is het geleden dat het voor een Grammy genomineerde album ‘Seesaw’ werd uitgebracht door singer-songwriter en blues-rock heldin Beth Hart en (blues)gitaarheld Joe Bonamassa. Sindsdien hebben beiden bepaald niet stil gezeten: de solo-albums bleven komen en werden opgevolgd door uitverkochte zalen. De tijd was echter rijp om weer eens samen wat te doen, 'Black Coffee' is een collectie vurige interpretaties van soulparels. Met producer Kevin ‘The Caveman’ Shirley aan het roer, is het resultaat een indrukwekkende soul-achtbaan die songs eert en herinter-preteert van o.a. Etta, James, Ike & Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, Howlin’ Wolf en Lucinda Williams. Vanaf morgen verkrijgbaar! Turin Brakes – Invisible Storm CD/LP Eén van mijn favoriete bands, zo'n band waarvan ik de platen regelmatig uit de kast blijf pakken, ook jaren na release. Morgen is het zover en verschijnt het nieuwe, achtste studioalbum. Na zeven studio albums en meer dan een miljoen verkochte albums zou je kunnen zeggen dat Turin Brakes inmiddels een band van formaat is. Toch is de grote doorbraak nooit gekomen. Wat (voor ons) uiteraard ook weer voordelen heeft. Zo spelen ze 20 april 'gewoon' in Tivoli de Helling en niet in één of ander mega stadion. Nieuwe album is wat meer uptempo en poppiër dan we gewend zijn, ben benieuwd hoe deze gaat vallen. De eerste single is 'Would You Be Mine'. Zoals je hebt kunnen lezen, Glen Hansard MAAR als ik maar één favoriet zou mogen noemen, kies ik, zonder twijfel voor John Bramwell. Sommige van jullie zullen hem kennen als zanger van I Am Kloot, met zijn band heeft hij onwaarschijnlijke mooie platen gemaakt maar ook solo is ieder liedje raak, puur, rauw, oprecht en echt. Hij tourt enorm veel en heeft een voorliefde voor Nederland en speelt hier dus soms wel meerdere keren per jaar. Ga alsjeblieft een keer kijken. Hij zit al ruim 20 jaar in het vak maar er is geen spoor van sleur te ontdekken, zodra hij op het podium staat is hij als een vis in het water en buiten dat hij bijzonder grappig is (stand up kan hij ook altijd nog gaan doen) pakt hij heel de zaal in bij ieder nummer wat hij inzet. Aanrader...maar dat had je al door denk ik ;) Joan As Police Woman – Damned Devotion CD/LP Release: 09-02-2018 Joan As Police Woman is geboren als Joan Wasser in 1970. Na een roerige jeugd raakte ze meer en meer met muziek in contact en begon ze viool te leren spelen. Al snel bleek dat ze hier een talent voor had en dus in no-time speelde ze in een band: The Dambuilders. Toen ze behoefte kreeg aan meer muzikale ruimte koos ze voor haar eigen muzikale carriere. Tot de dag des oordeels, haar vriendje...jullie wel bekend: Jeff Buckley verdronk in de Mississippi. Na een lange periode van rouw pakte ze haar leven weer op en na een paar bands (o.a. Anthony And The Johnsons) besloot ze haar eigen band, Joan As Police Woman, op te richten. 2006 kwam haar debuutalbum uit en deze werd meteen door iedere zelfrespecterende muziekjournalist de hemel in geprezen net als alle opvolgende albums trouwens. 'Damned Devotion' is haar zevende studioalbum en ik verwacht dat dit ook weer 'gewoon' een prachtig album is. Voor fans van o.a. A Girl Called Eddy, Aimee Mann, fam.Wainwright en Ane Brun! Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

    Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack.
