BOBAFLEX INTERVIEW WITH SHAUN MCCOY 5/21/16 Hartford, CT By: Nina McCarthy, Music Journalist [email protected] A special thank you to my friend Heidi Marion for sitting in on the interview and to Nathan Jones, Tour Manager for his amazing hospitality and Doug Weber at new Ocean Media for making it possible. BRR: You’ve probably had this question a million times, but you and Marty have ancestors back to the famous Hatfield/McCoy feud. Can you enlighten us a little bit on that? Shaun: Our family comes from the Tug River. They migrated from that area, and that’s where it all kind of took place. As far as a family tree, I have a hard time because we are just told and we go to the family reunions but our great grandfather did not have a social security number and he was shot and killed when he was 21 for stealing a horse in the mountains. He wasn’t a guy that had a lot of paperwork. So, we just go on our great aunts and uncles and who they say our other members are. But our little branch of McCoy's went from the Tug after the feud and died down and moved onto a little section of Lincoln County, West Virginia. That’s where our McCoys are from, which is only about two hours from where it all took place. We kind of migrated just a little bit North in West Virginia, but we’re still there. BRR: I read something about that when you go back now, the Hatfields just kill you with drinking? Shaun: We actually meet the Hatfields all over the road and they just try to kill us with bourbon now.

  • Blues Rock Star Joe Bonamassa Announces Highly Anticipated New Studio Album
BLUES-ROCK STAR JOE BONAMASSA ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE "TIME CLOCKS" TAKEN FROM HIS NEW STUDIO ALBUM 'TIME CLOCKS' TO BE RELEASED OCT 29 PRE-ORDER “TIME CLOCKS” https://smarturl.it/JoeB-MLG LISTEN TO THE “TIME CLOCKS” SINGLE HERE: https://smarturl.it/JoeBonamassa WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR “TIME CLOCKS” HERE: https://youtu.be/Z7116ryQV-I Guitar legend Joe Bonamassa today reveals his stunningly sweeping new single, "Time Clocks." This is the third song taken from his forthcoming brand-new studio album of the same name, released on October 29 via Provogue (Europe) and J&R Adventures (North America). Joe continues his soul-searching evolution on this beautifully poignant Bonamassa-Shirley penned song. At just over seven minutes long, it has all the epic musical grandeur of him at his most expressive and ambitious. With a heart on sleeve narrative weaving its way throughout, the rousing chorus rises to the heavens as he sings, "and the rain soaking through my coat, about to capsize my boat I push it along away from the docks, I was never a good puncher of time clocks." Backed with cascading vocals from Juanita Tippins and Prinnie Stevens, as well as the supreme musicianship of Anton Fig (Drums), Steve Mackey (Bass), Lachy Doley (Piano/Organ) and Kevin Shirley (Percussion), it has an aura of pure timelessness. The album was recorded in New York City and took Joe back to his early roots and rediscovers him at a newfound peak with an unparalleled Blues Rock prowess. Known as the man in the suit, loved by many as the ultimate guitar hero, and cited by critics as "the world's biggest blues guitarist" (Guitar World), somehow the music mastermind has found yet another layer of immense new artistry to share with his fans.

  • Beth Hart Press Release
Beth Hart “Better Than Home” PRD 7451 BETH HART’S NEW ALBUM, BETTER THAN HOME, IS BETH-ER THAN EVER Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Beth Hart, has never sounded better (musically and spiritually) than she does on her new album, Better Than Home. When she sings clocks stop, hearts dance and neck-hair tingles…it’s that compelling! A Planetmosh critic said, “I was just blown away by Beth’s voice!” and American Songwriter proclaimed, “Beth’s tough, throaty voice…she uses that powerful instrument to best effect on dramatic, arena filling ballads.” Beth’s incredible voice is what moved guitar legends Jeff Beck, Slash, Joe Bonamassa and Buddy Guy to perform with her on records and in concert. She reached national attention with the hit single, L.A. Song (Out Of This Town), the single reached #6 in the Billboard Modern AC chart and #7 in the Adult Top 40 chart; subsequent album, Bang Bang Boom Boom, made it to #3 in the Billboard Top Blues Album chart and shortly thereafter, Beth was nominated for a Blues Music Award. Album collaborations with Joe Bonamassa, Seesaw and Don’t Explain, made it to the top (#1 and #3) of the Billboard Blues Albums Chart, to #8 and #22 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums Chart and into the Billboard 200. International audiences fell in love with her and rewarded her with two #1 singles in Denmark from albums Leave The Light On and 37 Days (recorded live). Her greatest validation as one of the defining voices of our time, came when her tribute (alongside Jeff Beck) to Buddy Guy on The Kennedy Center Honors special, received one of the only 2 standing ovations of the evening, led by President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.

  • Easton Corbin
Easton Corbin All Over The Road Biography “Easton Corbin has one of those rare, glorious voices that was made—just made—for singing country music.” –American Songwriter With two No. 1 singles, multiple awards and nominations, plus performances on some of the biggest stages in the world, Easton Corbin made an auspicious entree with his self-titled debut album. The release of his sophomore effort, All Over the Road, builds on that success and delivers music that confirms that Easton Corbin is here to stay. When Easton broke on the scene in 2009 with not one, but two, No. 1 singles, “A Little More Country Than That” and “Roll With It,” and a Top 15 hit, “I Can’t Love You Back,” the country music world was put on notice. He became the first country male artist in 17 years to have his first two consecutive singles reach No. 1. Billboard named Easton the Top New Country Artist of 2010 and named "Roll With It" the No. 6 Hot Country Song of the Year. He was ranked No. 9 on Billboard’s list of Top Country Artists-Male, listed between Blake Shelton and Tim McGraw. With three American Country Awards in 2010 and blockbuster tours with Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley and Blake Shelton, Easton set the bar high for his sophomore release. Not surprisingly, the hard-working Gilchrist County, Florida native—“Everybody knows everybody,” he says—delivers in spades. The new collection—like the first, produced by top Nashville producer Carson Chamberlain (Billy Currington)—finds Easton improving upon his impressive debut.

MODERN DRUMMER VOL. 8, NO. 12 Cover Photo by Layne Murdock CONTENTS FEATURES TERRY BOZZIO Although his work with such artists as Frank Zappa, the Brecker Brothers, and UK established Terry Bozzio's reputation as a fine drummer, his work with Missing Persons has revealed that there is more to Bozzio than was demonstrated in those other situations. Here, he talks about the hard work that went into starting his own band, explains his feelings that drummers should be more visible, and details his self-designed electronic drumset. by Rick Mattingly 8 OMAR HAKIM The fact that Weather Report and David Bowie have been sharing the same drummer says a lot about Omar Hakim's versatility, especially when one considers the wide range of styles that each of those situations encompasses. But Hakim's background prepared him well for the many diverse musical settings he has encountered, and he recounts that background in this amiable discussion of his life and career. by Robin Tolleson 14 INSIDE CALATO by Rick Van Horn 18 IAN PAICE The drummer for Deep Purple reminisces about the group's formation, discusses the band's reunion after an eight-year breakup, and describes Deep Purple's effect on today's music. Likewise, Lemmy seemed too much a part of rock’s scenery to leave us so soon. As we went to press with this issue, we also learned the sad news that Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey had passed (look out for a full tribute next month), making this winter the worst in memory for losing legends. The only very slight consolation for all this is that it prompted us to listen again to the music that made them household names. In the case of Bowie, it was a reminder of the astonishing breadth and ambition of his music-making (see cover feature, p76). Rightly regarded as classic now, Bowie’s music must have been sensational when he was starting out – and I’m sure not everyone ‘got it’ at the time. Passing years have a habit of making the new and strange in music feel comfortably familiar, and finally classic. That thought has been a reminder of the importance of seeking out uncommon sounds, and not just sticking to your comfort zone of old favourites.
