The Communists and the Bulgarian .Orthodox Church, 1944-48: The Rise and Fall of Exarch Stefan SPAS T.RAIKIN For a long time before the communist takeover in Bulgaria on 9 Sep­ tember 1944, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Communist Party had been in a state of open hostility. The Bulgarian communists held firmly to the Marxist view that religion is the opium ofthe people. They carried on agitation at every level to discredit religion and the Church-. Intellectuals were told that to hold any religious beliefs is to regress to superstition. For the peasants and working classes, the priest was reduced to an object of ridicule for his laziness and immorality, illustrated with many degrading stories. This campaign, waged largely by young men who had. received some education in provincial towns, was conducted primarily in village taverns and on street corners where peasant youth congregated in the absence of any other social outlets, and was highly successful. To this challenge the Church could not find an adequate response. The mutually exclusive philosophical positions of Church and communism deprived both Church and Party of any point of contact. They remained total strangers, completely opposed to each other. The Communist Party never tried to infiltrate the Church or to create its own following there. Unlike the Orthodox Church in Yugoslavia, where numerous priests found themselves in the partisan groups of Marshal Tito, the Bulgarian Church was conspicuously absent from the "Fatherland Front" organised by the communists as a front to take over the country in 1944. The Church was part of the political and social order in the country, and was dependent upon this order for its survival.

Lk.6:36 Bishop Mathew Shija - RIP : Bishop Emeritus Most Rev. Mathew Shija of Kahama Diocese was called to eternal rest on December 9, 2015 in Kahama at the age of 91. Those of us who have encountered him know how fatherly he was to us. He was the Bishop of Kahama from November 11, 1983 to April 24, 2001 during which time we as MSFS started our ministry in the Diocese of Kahama. His mortal remains were laid to rest on December 17 in the Cathedral Church of Kahama. Mungu ana saa yake! Bishop Shija was a person of simplicity and compassion. He had genuine human concern for the other. We all remember the graceful moments we had with him whenever he visited our communities in Kahama and Tabora. With his unassuming personality and ever willing pastoral zeal, his life served as a telling example of the compassionate love of God and the missionary face of the church. When asked about his health, future, life style etc, he had always the serene answer: Mungu ana saa yake. God has his own time. Yes, God called him to eternal rest at the very beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy - in his own time. May the Souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in Peace. Cidade This project is the work of five Catholic national ministerial organizations collaborating on sustaining the pastoral excellence of the emerging models of pastoral leadership in the Catholic Church. These organizations believe that, at this time, the life of the Catholic Church depends on ongoing and sustained collaboration at all levels. Their vision is for a more fully collaborative, competent, and mission-focused pastoral leadership, strengthened in their service to parish communities at all levels. These organizations have researched marks of excellence for vibrant parishes and are committed to providing research and dialogue with pastoral leadership in pursuing this excellence. In order to create a climate in which much needed research, theological reflection, and practical transforming action can take place, this Project has set three goals: 1) To provide solid research on the emerging models of parish pastoral leadership; 2) To stimulate a national conversation about the use of pastoral imagination to create vibrant parishes; and 3) To explore ways in which national associations can collaborate to serve the Church.     Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting.
