These freshwater macroinvertebrates are predators and parasites of the equally diverse nematocerous Dipterans, such as mosquitoes, and water mites are believed to have diversified as a result of these predatory and parasitic relationships. Through these two major biotic interactions, water mites have been found to greatly impact a variety of mosquito species. Although these predatory and parasitic interactions are important in aquatic ecology, very little is known about the diversity of water mites that interact with mosquitoes. In this paper, we review and update the past literature on the predatory and parasitic mite–mosquito relationships, update past records, discuss the biogeographic range of these interactions, and add our own recent findings on this topic conducted in habitats around the Laurentian Great Lakes. -

Results are based on limited data analyses and may be revised in the future as new analytical tools are developed. Additionally, many volunteers, agency staff and consultants assisted the Contra Costa Clean Water Program in collecting bioassessment data described in this report. In particular, volunteers from the Friends of Pinole, Alhambra, Marsh, Kirker and Mt. Diablo Creek Watersheds, Friends of Five Creeks, and the San Pablo Creek Watershed Awareness Network, as well numerous other volunteers have put in countless hours in the field. Additionally, the Program’s Watershed Assessment and Monitoring (WAM) Subcommittee members have provided guidance to Program staff, and Scott Cressey (Cressey and Associates) has provided assistance to the Program throughout the implementation of the Contra Costa Monitoring and Assessment Program (CCMAP). Executive Summary Stormwater monitoring programs use a variety of indicators to assess the physical, chemical and biological integrity (i.e., condition) of water bodies, including conventional water quality measurements (e.g., dissolved oxygen and pH), sediment and water chemistry (e.g., heavy metal concentrations) and toxicity (e.g., bioassays) testing, channel geomorphology measurements and biological assessments (e.g., bioassessments). -

Taxonomically, the 491 new species of the Trombidiformes are highly unevenly distributed among 55 families with top 10 families accounting for over 66% of the total. The Eriophyidae is the top-ranked family. Geographically, these 491 new species are from 55 countries around the world and their distribution among the countries is highly uneven. The majority of these new species (69%) are from the top 10 countries and six of the top ten countries are also megadiversity countries. The top three countries are all from Asia (Iran, China and Malaysia) and they together accounted for over one third of all new species of the Trombidiformes described in the two journals during 2013–2015. Key words: Mites, Trombidiformes, new species, hotspots, type locality, type depository Introduction Discoveries of new species around the world are unevenly distributed; some countries are hotspots for the discovery of new species because they are hotspots of biodiversity (Mittermeier 1988; Gaston 2000) with more undescribed species or a higher concentration of taxonomists (both local and overseas) interested in working on the biodiversity of these regions (or a combination of both). -

Abstract Polyhumic dystrophic rivers are very rare in Poland and polyhumic rivers (both poly- and dystrophic) are weakly researched in general. The aim of the study was to present a detailed faunistic and ecological analysis of the water mites of polyhumic dystrophic rivers from Janów Forests Landscape Park (central-eastern Poland) and to compare the Hydrachnidia communities of those rivers with the Hydrachnidia of non-polyhumic rivers of this area. In small, fully polyhumic rivers Hydrachnidia fauna was poor in species and individuals, the populations of most species were very small and the characteristic feature of these rivers was very low species diversity. Therefore, the pronounced dystrophy of small polyhumic rivers should be considered a factor restricting the development of larger Hydrachnidia populations. In partially polyhumic rivers the water mite fauna was more diverse than in fully polyhumic rivers. The greater diversity of fauna resulted from the migration of species and individuals from the upper reaches of the river (non-polyhumic) and from greater habitat diversity. As a general conclusion we can say that in the fauna of polyhumic dystrophic rivers it is impossible to indicate species that could be considered characteristic of these habitats and that distinguish the Hydrachnidia communities of polyhumic rivers from those of non-polyhumic rivers. -

They have colonized all types of freshwater habitats and are highly diversified in both lotic and lentic habitats. Over 6,000 species of Hydrachnidia have been described worldwide, representing eight superfamilies, 57 families, 81 subfamilies and more than 420 genera. Water mite systematics is continually subject to change and vari- ous modifications. Performing systematic revisions can lead to numerous misunderstandings and difficulties in comparing research results, as the same species can have different systematic names in different publications. The development of molecular biology techniques has popular- ized the use of genomic traits in taxonomic identification. -
