Copyright © 2009 Population Association of New Zealand The Demographic Transformation of Inner City Auckland WARDLOW FRIESEN * Abstract The inner city of Auckland, comprising the inner suburbs and the Central Business District (CBD) has undergone a process of reurbanisation in recent years. Following suburbanisation, redevelopment and motorway construction after World War II, the population of the inner city declined significantly. From the 1970s onwards some inner city suburbs started to become gentrified and while this did not result in much population increase, it did change the characteristics of inner city populations. However, global and local forces converged in the 1990s to trigger a rapid repopulation of the CBD through the development of apartments, resulting in a great increase in population numbers and in new populations of local and international students as well as central city workers and others. he transformation of Central Auckland since the mid-twentieth century has taken a number of forms. The suburbs encircling the TCentral Business District (CBD) have seen overall population decline resulting from suburbanisation, as well as changing demographic and ethnic characteristics resulting from a range of factors, and some areas have been transformed into desirable, even elite, neighbourhoods. Towards the end of the twentieth century and into the twenty first century, a related but distinctive transformation has taken place in the CBD, with the rapid construction of commercial and residential buildings and a residential population growth rate of 1000 percent over a fifteen year period. While there are a number of local government and real estate reports on this phenomenon, there has been relatively little academic attention to its nature * School of Environment, The University of Auckland. -

ISSN 2423-009X Article Auckland Inner-City Residents’ Experiences and Expressions of Community Connectedness by LOVE CHILE and XAVIER BLACK ABSTRACT The concept of community connectedness has become increasingly important in inner-city residential development planning as high-rise apartment living becomes consolidated in inner cities. The distinct nature of the built environment of inner-city apartment living creates particular challenges for residents’ experiences and expressions of community connectedness. This is further exacerbated by the growing ethno-cultural and socio-economic diversity of inner cities. This paper examines the experiences and expressions of community connectedness by Auckland inner-city residents with a view to extending our understanding of what constitutes community connectedness for high-rise inner-city communities. Using multi-stage, multi-method research consisting of a survey questionnaire, intensive interviews and focus group discussions, the study found significant association between residents’ experiences and expressions of community connectedness and their socio-economic and ethno-cultural backgrounds. The findings suggest that planners, city authorities and community service provider organizations need to take account of sense of community, belonging and connectedness in developing high rise apartment neighbourhoods to pre-empt some of the social issues that impact on residents’ well-being and quality of life. -

Item 10 Auckland As a UNESCO Creative City of Music
AUCKLAND City of Music BIDDING TO BECOME A UNESCO CREATIVE CITY PROJECT PARTNERS Foreword There is growing recognition of music as a transformative power, not only as a cultural staple, but also as an economic driver for cities. Boosting the music economy would bring multiple dividends to Auckland, from advancing artistic and cultural growth, to generating substantial economic impacts from job creation and music tourism spending, thereby increasing GDP. A vibrant music economy would create the quality of life that makes people want to live and work in a Music City, giving Auckland an added edge in business attraction and retention. The music sector, in partnership with Auckland Council, will make an application in 2017 to become designated as a UNESCO* City of Music The music sector is being led by APRA|AMCOS and Recorded Music NZ, with support in principle from the NZ Music Commission, NZ Music Hall of Fame and NZ On Air with more supporters to be confirmed in time. The infrastructure to support the music sector is sited in Auckland, and key players will lead the application process in partnership with Auckland Council and its CCOs (pending approval from the the Council’s Governing Body). We’ve reached that milestone by keeping things simple and keeping them interesting. Artweek is run by a team whose goal is to encourage people to look at art. That’s it. There are exhibitions, events, and great partnerships with local businesses. There are light shows, late nights, bicycle tours, street art and more painting, photography, installation and sculpture than you can shake a stick at. But, most importantly, Artweek seeks to show you what every week can be like if you choose to make art part of your ‘normal’. Artweek divides our super-sized city into precincts, highlighting galleries and art spaces that may be on your commute that you never knew were there. And if you think you’re not into art, that may be more likely a disconnect between what you think of as art than what you think and feel when you see art ‘in the wild’. It’s easy to dismiss things that have not been part of your experience as unnecessary, superfluous, meaningless, a waste of precious resources. Artweek is a reminder that you have a right to be here in these spaces, and artists want you in them. There is art that shouts and art that whispers, art that is best looked at by yourself and art that only happens in crowds. -
