Our vision A spiritually alive world Our mission Reimagining church with courage, joy and wonder The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany Sunday, February 3, 2019 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist Welcome to Grace Cathedral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: “What do I need to receive? What do I have to give?” We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! – The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral • If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. Like a lot of prophets receiving their call, Jeremiah’s first response is stout denial. Surely God could choose someone better qualified, really there must be some terrible mistake. It’s easy to rattle off the reasons one isn’t suited to be a messenger – our limitations and our frailties are abundantly obvious to us. Yet God stubbornly looks past them to the gifts already given to us. It’s also easy to see that God’s gifts aren’t always gifts of comfort and plenty. Prophets generally have an awful time of it, and it’s perhaps a healthy degree of self-skepticism to doubt that what one has to say is always exactly what God meant one to say. Even Jesus, initially buoyed by the enthusiasm of his hometown synagogue, finds himself meeting outrage and frustration when he tells some home truths. Jesus goes out into the world again, none the worse for his experience and ready to continue serving those he encounters. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul invites us to consider ourselves always accompanied, always strengthened by the power of love – without which, nothing we have to say will have any meaning to anyone. Is this the year we can look with faith and courage at the gifts God has given us, swallowing the doubt about our own fitness to employ them, and use the powers we’ve been granted without fear of consequences? God wants to hear us say “yes” at last. Carol James has been part of the cathedral community for over a decade. She has served as a co-mentor in the Education for Ministry (EfM) program.
