This represents a milestone for us, as we enter the FOUNDING MEMBER! second volume of Gygax Magazine’s publication history. Technically, our second volume should also mark our second year, but as our infinitely patient and sainted subscribers are aware, it has taken us a bit longer than a year to get to number five. Of course, the fact that you’re reading this means that there’s a decent possibility that you may be one of the people who joined us with issue #1 and has renewed for a second tour of duty, and for that we all thank you. Saying complimentary things to readers and pouring on the gratitude might be a bit of a shopworn way to start out an editorial, but believe me, it’s from the heart. It’s becoming a happy tradition to welcome new staf members to TSR in this part of the magazine, and I’m pleased to carry that on by welcoming Michelle Weidman and Andrew Rodgers. Michelle is the operations manager for Gygax Magazine and TSR, and is here in part to make sure the quarterly schedule we profess lives up to its name, so that the year 2015 close with our eighth issue. This year will also see a number of other products coming from TSR, meaning that it’s more important than ever that we stay organized and productive. Which leads nicely to Andrew Rodgers, our new designer. This is the second issue of Gygax Magazine that Andrew has designed, and if you don’t mind my saying so, I think it looks a peach. Andrew’s first work with us was just before Gary Con 2014, when he designed the limited edition standalone Top Secret module, Operation: Rendevous Oasis. Anyone who was fortunate enough to play at “The Administrator” Merle Rasmussen’s table at Gary Con this year went home with a copy, and was among the first to see Andrew’s great photocollage work, as well as the maps that he collaborated with Diesel on, giving them that gritty desert-worn look. Guilmartin, Advisor Alan Beyerchen Ousman Kobo Copyright by Robert H Clemm 2012 Abstract This dissertation documents the ways in which cartography was used during the Scramble for Africa to conceptualize, conquer and administer newly-won European colonies. By comparing the actions of two colonial powers, Germany and Britain, this study exposes how cartography was a constant in the colonial process. Using a three-tiered model of “gazes” (Discoverer, Despot, and Developer) maps are analyzed to show both the different purposes they were used for as well as the common appropriative power of the map. In doing so this study traces how cartography facilitated the colonial process of empire building from the beginnings of exploration to the administration of the colonies of German and British East Africa. During the period of exploration maps served to make the territory of Africa, previously unknown, legible to European audiences. Under the gaze of the Despot the map was used to legitimize the conquest of territory and add a permanence to the European colonies. Lastly, maps aided the capitalist development of the colonies as they were harnessed to make the land, and people, “useful.” Of special highlight is the ways in which maps were used in a similar manner by both private and state entities, suggesting a common understanding of the power of the map.

Starting out in the basement of his home, he was soon struggling to keep up with the demand. Gygax was a purist, in the sense that he was adamant that players use their imaginations and that the rules of the game remain flexible. A creative mind with no real knowledge of business, he made some strategic errors and had a falling out with the game's co-creator, his close friend and partner, David Arneson. By the late 1970s the game had become so popular among kids that parents started to worry -- so much so that a mom's group was formed to alert parents to the dangers of role play and fantasy. The backlash only fueled the fires of the young fans who continued to play the game, escaping into imaginary worlds.

On the other hand, this approach tends toward oversim­ plification and breeds a kind of tunnel vision. One area which that tunnel vision has largely eliminated from consid­ eration in histories of fantasy has been the narrative poetry, some quite long, of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: work that engaged similar subject matter, identifieditself with similar areas of premodem and tradi­ tional narrative, and was widely read by many of the writers of the BAFS Introduction canon. Another area, not neglected but needing some refinement of per­ spective, has to do with those "epics and romances and sagas": they are gen­ erally alluded to rather indiscriminately as stufffrom (vaguely) "way back Charting the Terrain then." But modern access to these works is via scholarly editions, transla­ tions, epitomes, and retellings, themselves reflectingmodern perspectives; to readers of two centuries ago, the medieval Arthurian romances seeing print forthe first time were as new as Pride and Prejudice.
