HOLMES Department of Biology Baylor University Waco, Texas 76798-7388 ABSTRACT Recent botanical work in Cameron Co., Texas, has resulted in the discovery of naturalized Cupaniopsis anacardioides in the understory of a Sabal mexicana-Ebenopsis ebano forest in a Nature Conservancy preserve. The population includes 30-40 plants of varying age classes from mature to seedling trees. Cupaniopsis (Sapindaceae) is a genus of about 67 species known from Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands of Micronesia, New Caledonia, and eastern Indonesia (Morat et al. 2012; Reynolds 1985; Hyland et al. 2010). Cupaniopsis anacardioides (carrotwood, tuckeroo) is native to Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea and has been introduced to the USA –– California (Lockhart et al. 1999), Florida (Oliver 1992), Hawaii (O‘ahu, Frohlich & Lau 2010; Maui, Starr & Starr 2011; and Kauai, Starr & Starr 2015). Establishment in the USA apparently has resulted from its usage in the subtropical nursery trade during the 1950s and early 1960s. The present paper documents the occurrence of the species to Texas, based on the following specimen. TEXAS . Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. McLean2 Introduction Red buckeye is a small North American native tree, capable of reaching 25 to 30 feet tall in the wild though is most often at 15 to 20 feet high when grown in cultivation. Red buckeye is most popular for its springtime display of 3- to 6-inch-long, upright, terminal panicles composed of 1.5-inch-wide, red flowers, which are quite attractive to hummingbirds. These blooms are followed by flat, round capsules that contain bitter and poisonous seeds. The large, dark green, palmate leaves usually offer no great color change in fall and often drop as early as late September. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ CALIFORNIA CONIFERS: CONIFER COMMUNITIES OF THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS AND INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE FOR THE UCSC ARBORETUM AND BOTANIC GARDEN A senior internship project in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of BACHELOR OF ARTS in ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES by Erika Lougee December 2019 ADVISOR(S): Karen Holl, Environmental Studies; Brett Hall, UCSC Arboretum ABSTRACT: There are 52 species of conifers native to the state of California, 14 of which are endemic to the state, far more than any other state or region of its size. There are eight species of coniferous trees native to the Santa Cruz Mountains, but most people can only name a few. For my senior internship I made a set of ten interpretive signs to be installed in front of California native conifers at the UCSC Arboretum and wrote an associated paper describing the coniferous forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Signs were made using the Arboretum’s laser engraver and contain identification and collection information, habitat, associated species, where to see local stands, and a fun fact or two. While the physical signs remain a more accessible, kid-friendly format, the paper, which will be available on the Arboretum website, will be more scientific with more detailed information. The paper will summarize information on each of the eight conifers native to the Santa Cruz Mountains including localized range, ecology, associated species, and topics pertaining to the species in current literature. Aesculus octandra Family: Hippocastanaceae Yellow Buckeye The genus Aesculus contains 13 species, which grow in the United States [6], Mexico [1] and Eurasia [6]. Species cannot be separated based on microanatomy. The name aesculus is a Latin name of a European oak or other mast-bearing tree. Buckeye is not customarily separated from other species when manufactured into lumber and can be utilized for the same purposes as aspen, basswood, and sap yellow- poplar. The following description is for yellow buckeye (Aesculus octandra). The Tree Buckeye is a tree 30 to 70 ft (9 to 21 m) high and 2 ft (0.6 m) in diameter. It grows best in rich moist soil along the banks of streams and in river bottoms. Buckeye matures in 60 to 80 years. It is one of the initial trees to leaf-out in the spring. -

Plant Communities: Foothill woodlands California buckeye provides year-round beauty to the garden. During the dormant season, the handsome, thick-stemmed silhouette and silvery smooth bark is revealed. Apple green foliage bursts Habitat: forth in early spring. Beautifully abundant Foothill Woodland in dry canyons and slopes candelabra like flowers bloom from April -June and visited by nectar seeking hummingbirds. If that isn't enough, large chestnut-brown seeds then appear in the fall. Use as a single specimen in the landscape or plant several as an informal hedge.
