Art was a Fred’s customer for about 10 years and very interesting to talk to. He was a college professor and very knowledgeable of geology and related topics. We used to debate hydrofracking quite a lot, and even though we disagreed on the matter it was always friendly. Art ordered nearly every list and he will be missed as a customer and friend WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER “VACATION”—2014 VERSION 1.0 I dread the approach of September each year, for many reasons. It means summer, or what we call summer here in Buffalo, is coming to an end. Summer shirts and shorts are put away by the end of the month and our perennials start to change colors and die. When I was in school, I hated the thought of another school year approaching, with a loss of freedom and a gain in the regimentation that education often brings. When I was in grade school in Tonawanda, NY from grade one to four, my most dreaded moment was when the teacher would ask us to stand one at a time in the middle of class and recite what we did on our summer vacation. I was and still am an awful public speaker. I’m great one on one, but put dozens of eyes look at me at the same time and I turn to jelly. I don’t recall anything I said about summer vacation in the years I had to speak in front of class, but I’m sure it wasn’t anything to write home about. In 2014, long out of school, I have little or nothing to write home about either. I’m a homebody and don’t like to stray far from home. 200 miles feels more like 2,000 to me. Besides, money is tight around here and probably at your place too. College tuition? Car repairs on two aging cars? Health care? Home repairs? Food, if you choose to eat? Welcome to adulthood. Even if we did have money, where would we go? Probably out to visit the in laws in New Mexico. I like the weather, but some of my wife’s family are whackos! That’s not to say we sat on our butts all summer and watched tv. We didn’t….about 10 percent of the time. There’s only so much rehashed news I can take. We now present, with all modesty and humility, what we did during the summer of 2014: The highlight, in my opinion, was our day trip to Toronto, Ontario Canada, my favorite place to visit. We were supposed to go last year, but persistent neck trouble relegated us to a shorter trip to St. Catherines, Ontario, a much small city. Our trip was planned around a visit to the new Ripley’s Aquarium, next to Rogers Centre, where the Blue Jays play baseball. Ripley’s is less than a year old and spectacular. Admission was a bit expensive, so was parking, and the noise level of a million screaming kids inside the place was a bit unbearable, but it is an exciting place to visit if you like marine life. The most memorable part of the visit is a 400 or so foot long motorized walkway surrounded by panoramic glass, where you get about as close to sharks and other rare specimens as 2 possible. Imagine a shark just inches from your head, separated by nothing but thick glass!! All the exhibits proved interesting and I strongly recommend a visit there. After more than two hours at Ripley’s, we walked down to the waterfront for awhile, although it was a bit noisy due to ongoing construction downtown. After that, we walked uptown to our favorite shopping venue, Eaton Centre. We covered a good part of that and by that time it was late in the afternoon and time to go home. Every year, we make it a point to go and see live racing. Watching Nascar on tv is usually boring, this year more than ever as I have fewer and fewer favorite drivers in each race. This year we went to see short track racing at Holland Speedway, about 45 minutes south of Buffalo. Holland Speedway is a historic short track that’s been around for years. I do love short track racing, the sights, sounds and smells of motorized mayhem. I’m a little concerned about the smaller fields here and at some of the other tracks in Western New York. It is getting increasingly more expensive to go racing these days and people around here aren’t wealthy. All I can hope for is a miracle to keep these local racers racing. We also visited the spiritualist community called the Lilydale Assembly in Lilydale, NY. Since my sister passed in April, I’ve missed her terribly and wanted some way of hearing from her. Lilydale has all sorts of activities for spiritualists and those interested in spiritualism. We visited late in August on a partly sunny and coolish day. We arrived a bit late for a healing ceremony, but they let us in anyway and I was able to see a healer briefly. This was a first for me and I do believe that the upper back problem I was dragging around part of the summer was taken care of. I felt a burning in my back as I was being worked on, and the following day my back cracked and went back into place! We went to a group medium meeting and witnessed multiple readings for the crowd…but none for myself or the wife. After lunch we did find a medium to do a personal reading for us in her summer home at Lilydale. Although I did not hear from my sister, I did get messages from my dad, my wife from her grandfather. The medium also had interesting things to say about my children and other important subjects. Much of the information received no one would know expect my wife and I, so count us in as believers. Batter up! We went to two Buffalo Bisons games, one early in the season, the other toward the end, when we were fighting for a playoff spot. We’ve been going to baseball games at the stadium downtown for years. I feel like it’s a second home for us. There’s nothing like a baseball game to relax you and revitalize your spirit. My diet took a hit with every French fry and hot dog and our team managed to lose both games. A handful of the players were good enough to be called up by the parent club Toronto Blue Jays early in September, when they were still in a playoff race. 3 We finished our summer the same way we started it: eating greek food at a nice restaurant on the porch on nice sunny days. In May, it was at Costa’s, September Panos. Nothing like nice food with a nice wife. My wife and I also went to a movie, although neither of us can recall what movie we saw. I bought too many model kits in the summer, had too many car repairs and home improvements, lost sleep and more hair and probably my sanity once or twice.
