Irina Matijosaitiene Co-supervisor Johan Jacob Marija De Wachter Reviewer Assoc. prof. dr. Martynas Marozas Project made by Ana Petriashvili KAUNAS 2017 2 ANNOTATION The lack of researches, concentrating on identifying urban features that can be associated with target selection by terrorists, determined thesis overriding question and goal, identify environmental security design elements, as well as spatial urban structures that can possible influence choice of places for terror attacks. To accomplish main goal, some prerequisite goals have been taken into account. Initially, a brief history of terrorism and anti-terrorism design with number of examples and cases have been analyzed and assessed, where some sophisticated security design principles have been highlighted. For humanizing ant-terrorism design elements, crime prevention strategies have been explored, ending with a basic principle of urban and civic design. Second Chapter of a thesis, researches environmental design factors and spatial urban structures that may influence the choice of places for terror attacks. Findings have reviled the chance of terror attack is high when ‘site has a direct access to the main street’; when ‘there are multiple entrances and exits to and from the site’; when ‘site is well-used’; when ‘public and private activities are separated’; when ‘many same functional buildings are redistributed in a surrounding area’; when ‘site has a direct access to the city center’.

Some of the present competitors were focused just on themselves; others were nervously squeezing team mascots or national flags in their hands. An intro, “The Element Song”, played while presenters Daniel Stach and Emma Smetana warmly welcomed the entire audience from the stage. After large applause by 300 students, 256 mentors, 84 guides, 27 ambassadors, and other distinguished guests, making it a total of 731 people, Dvořák Hall was carried away by the tones of the symphonic poem, “Vltava” by Bedřich Smetana, performed live by the Nostitz Quartet, with the Vltava River flowing in front of them on the screen. A few minutes later, Martin Putala and Petr Holzhauser, Presidents of the 50th IChO, went on stage. Putala asked audience members if they were happy about the Olympiad. The audience answered with loud applause, nodding their heads. Referring to his Opening Ceremony speech in Bratislava, Holzhauser described how his feelings have evolved during the past few days: “My right hand has been shaking due to signing over 700 certificates and diplomas. Now I am in the process of relaxation and slowly gaining © T. BELLOŇ © T. back a degree of freedom,” Holzhauser said. As the medal ceremony was about to begin, nervousness was gradually increasing. Firstly, 10 Honorable Mentions were award- ed, then it was time to award the students with the medals.
