This research addresses the feature of ambiguity in the ghazal and its effectiveness in the development of Rich’s feminist language. It argues that this ambiguity served the North American poet to create a hybrid or border-crossing poetic language or, in her own words, ‘a common language.’ This new mode of writing allowed her to speak of women and to connect gender issues to socio-political matters in her society. In other words, it created new spaces for her to connect the private to the public sphere, to speak of women on an equal level with men and to empower them. This poetic language not only went against the patriarchal norms of writing, but against all forms of oppression by asking for equality and empowerment of all marginal groups such as the African-Americans. In addition, this research insists on the role played by translation in helping Rich to create a hybrid text, to interpolate new words, images, themes, and forms into her poetry from other literary traditions. It argues that Rich’s collaboration in the translation project of Aijaz Ahmad, the Pakistani Marxist literary theorist, in 1968-9, had far reaching effects on her own poetry. Her involvement in the translation of the ghazals of the 19th century Indian poet Mirza Ghalib, indeed influenced the development of her poetic language and offered her new modes of writing. This research project is based on a text-centered approach, drawing on largely poetic material, from classical Persian and Urdu poems and their translations into English, to poems and the ghazals written by Adrienne Rich and other post World War II North American poets. 8 Additionally, by adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this study draws on a vast number of critical works on feminism, as well as gender studies and translation studies. It takes into account a wide range of critical works on Persian and Urdu poems, North American poetry and Rich’s poetry and prose. Its focus is the analysis of Ghazals of Ghalib (1971), the book edited by Aijaz Ahmad. This is a selected number of Ghalib’s ghazals, accompanied by Ahmad’s literal translations, and by the poetic re-writings of Adrienne Rich and other poets like W.S. Merwin, and William Stafford. This research also examines the collections of ghazals in English composed by Rich, respectively entitled “Ghazals: Homage to Ghalib” in Leaflets (1969) and “The Blue Ghazals” in The Will to Change (1971). The influence of Ghalib’s ghazals on Rich’s poetry has been partly studied by the scholars Marina Camboni and Biancamaria Scarcia Amoretti. With their essays, respectively “Come pagine di un diario: i ghazals di Adrienne Rich” (1982) and “Per fate Morgane da Ghalib a Adrienne Rich” (1983), they point out the influence of Ghalib’s ghazals on the words, images, and themes in Rich’s poems. They argue that Rich utilized the ambiguity or the masculine homosexuality present in Ghalib’s ghazals to produce an androgynous identity or a feminine homophile in her poems. The presence of an ambiguity or duality in Rich’s poems, particularly, in the volumes Leaflets and The Will to Change, has also been mentioned by several other scholars such as Sonali Barua, Albert Gelpi, Claire Keyes, Alice Templeton, and Paul Wadden. However, to the best of my knowledge a detailed study of the influence of Ghalib’s ghazals on Adrienne Rich’s poetry has not been undertaken. This is most probably due to the lack of knowledge or competency in the Persian and Urdu languages, since to understand Ghalib’s ghazals one should inevitably be familiar both with the long tradition of Persian and Islamic poetry and with the Urdu language in which Ghalib’s ghazals and many other ghazals 9 of the Indian style of poetry are written. Moreover, in order to study the influence of the ghazal on Rich’s poetry and to be able to distinguish its features in her poems, one should have a specialized knowledge of the particular codes, symbols and formal aspects of the Persian poetic tradition. In other words, without having the knowledge of both the English and Persian languages and their cultural and literary traditions, the study of their intertextual relations must necessarily be limited. Therefore, it should be underscored that the literary and cultural knowledge of the researcher in recognizing the presence of one text in another has been a decisive factor in formulating the significance of the intertextual relations between Ghalib’s poetry with the tradition of Persian and Urdu poetry, between Ghalib’s poetry with Ahmad’s literal translation, Adrienne Rich’s poetical adaptation and finally her original ghazals. This dissertation is organized into five chapters. It is a collection of distinct but conceptually linked chapters with a common project and interlocking themes. As it is a comparative study, on the one hand it contributes specifically to demonstrating the influence of feminism and translation on Rich’s poetic language, while, on the other, it introduces the poetic form the ghazal and particularly its ambiguity which is the focus of this study. Furthermore, it highlights the role of Aijaz Ahmad and the Indian poet of Diaspora Agha Shahid Ali in introducing the ghazal into North America. Finally, it reveals the essence of this comparative and interdisciplinary study by bringing together the diverse and seemingly separate aspects of these poetic traditions. It deals with Aijaz Ahmad’s translation project and analyses in detail his literal translations and explanations. At the same time it examines the poetical adaptations made by Rich based on Ahmad’s work. It also studies Rich’s ghazals, demonstrating the influence of those written by Ghalib and Ahmad’s interpretive mediation on her poetic language. 10 Chapter one focuses on the influence of feminist theories and translation on Rich’s poetic language. It briefly discusses the feminists’ approach in the 1960s and 1970s to cultural transmission through translation and points out that one of the most important elements for Europeans and North American feminist poets and critics was the transference of concrete images.

At the heart of this discourse is the thematic of love. Indeed, the Qur’an and other Islamic materials do not readily yield an explicit reference to love in the way that such a notion is found within Christianity and the figure of Jesus. This is not to say that „love‟ is altogether absent from Islamic religion, since every Qur‟anic chapter, except for the ninth (surat at-tawbah), is prefaced In the Name of God; the Merciful, the Most Kind (bismillahi r-rahmani r-rahim). Love (Arabic habb; Persian Ishq), however, becomes a foremost concern of Muslim mystics, who from the ninth century onward adopted the theme to convey their experience of longing for God. Sufi references to the theme of love starts with Rabia al-Adawiyya (717-801) and expand outward from there in a powerful tradition. Although not always synonymous with the figure of Jesus, this tradition does, in due course, find a distinct compatibility with him.

These teachings include the educational teachings of Zal and Roudabeh, and Paris and Helen. This paper presents a comparative look at the immortal effect of this Iranian poet with Homer's poem-- the Greek blind poet. In this comparison, using a content analysis method, the effects of the educational teachings of these two stories are extracted and expressed, The results of this study show that the human and universal educational teachings of Shahnameh are far more than that of Homer's Iliad. Introduction The literature of every nation is a mirror of the entirety of thought, culture and customs of that nation, which can be expressed in elegance and artistic delicacy in many different ways. "The most obvious points of Shahnameh are its advice and many examples and moral commands. To do this, Ferdowsi has taken every opportunity and has made every event an excuse. Even kings and warriors are used for this purpose. "Comparative literature is also an important foundation for the exodus of indigenous literature from isolation, and it will be a part of the entire literary heritage of the world, exposed to thoughts and ideas, and is also capable of helping to identify contemplation legacies in the understanding and friendship of the various nations."(Ghanimi, 44: 1994) Epic literature includes poems that have a spiritual aspect, not an individual one.

    Classical Persian Literature Bahman Solati (Ph.D), 2015 University of California, Berkeley [email protected] Introduction Studying the roots of a particular literary history enables us to better understand the allusions the literature transmits and why we appreciate them. It also allows us to foresee how the literature may progress.1 I will try to keep this attitude in the reader’s mind in offering this brief summary of medieval Persian literature, a formidable task considering the variety and wealth of the texts and documentation on the subject.2 In this study we will pay special attention to the development of the Persian literature over the last millennia, focusing in particular on the initial development and background of various literary genres in Persian. Although the concept of literary genres is rather subjective and unstable,3 reviewing them is nonetheless a useful approach for a synopsis, facilitating greater understanding, deeper argumentation, and further speculation than would a simple listing of dates, titles, and basic biographical facts of the giants of Persian literature. Also key to literary examination is diachronicity, or the outlining of literary development through successive generations and periods. Thriving Persian literature, undoubtedly shaped by historic events, lends itself to this approach: one can observe vast differences between the Persian literature of the tenth century and that of the eleventh or the twelfth, and so on.4 The fourteenth century stands as a bridge between the previous and the later periods, the Mongol and Timurid, followed by the Ṣafavids in Persia and the Mughals in India. Given the importance of local courts and their support of poets and writers, it is quite understandable that literature would be significantly influenced by schools of thought in different provinces of the Persian world.5 In this essay, I use the word literature to refer to the written word adeptly and artistically created.

    Irreverent Persia IRANIAN IRANIAN SERIES SERIES Poetry expressing criticism of social, political and cultural life is a vital integral part of IRREVERENT PERSIA Persian literary history. Its principal genres – invective, satire and burlesque – have been INVECTIVE, SATIRICAL AND BURLESQUE POETRY very popular with authors in every age. Despite the rich uninterrupted tradition, such texts FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE TIMURID PERIOD have been little studied and rarely translated. Their irreverent tones range from subtle (10TH TO 15TH CENTURIES) irony to crude direct insults, at times involving the use of outrageous and obscene terms. This anthology includes both major and minor poets from the origins of Persian poetry RICCARDO ZIPOLI (10th century) up to the age of Jâmi (15th century), traditionally considered the last great classical Persian poet. In addition to their historical and linguistic interest, many of these poems deserve to be read for their technical and aesthetic accomplishments, setting them among the masterpieces of Persian literature. Riccardo Zipoli is professor of Persian Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, where he also teaches Conceiving and Producing Photography. The western cliché about Persian poetry is that it deals with roses, nightingales, wine, hyperbolic love-longing, an awareness of the transience of our existence, and a delicate appreciation of life’s fleeting pleasures. And so a great deal of it does. But there is another side to Persian verse, one that is satirical, sardonic, often obscene, one that delights in ad hominem invective and no-holds barred diatribes. Perhaps surprisingly enough for the uninitiated reader it is frequently the same poets who write both kinds of verse.

The authors of the monograph provide a critical analysis of both the arguments and terms put forward primarily by Soviet Oriental school, and those introduced in modern nationalistic writings, which misrepresent the background and cultural heritage of Nezami. Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. The article on Fitnet Khanim in Fati'n Efendi's Tezkire is as usual of the slightest, and later writers such as Zihni Efendi the author of 'Famous Women', and Ahmed Mukh- tcir Efendi, who has compiled a little book entitled 'Our Poetesses,' have been able to add but little to his meagre details. This poetess, whose personal name was Zubeyde, belonged to a talented and distinguished family, her father, Mehemmed Es^ad Efendi, being Sheykh-ul-Islam under Mah- mud I, and her brother, Mehemmed Sherif Efendi, holding the same high office under '^Abd-ul-Hamid I. The father is said to have been skilled in music, an extraordinary accom- pHshmcnt in a member of the 'ulcma, while both he and his son were gifted, though in far less measure than his daughter, with poetic talent. Fitnet was unfortunate in her marriage, her husband, Dervish Efendi, who became a Qadi- ^Askcr of Rumelia under Seli'm III, being a man without ability and utterly unwortiiy of iiis brilliant wife. When it is added that I'itnct died in the year i 194 (1780), all that is known concerning her life-story has been told.
