JAMES BOND: SIGNIFYING CHANGING IDENTITY THROUGH THE COLD WAR AND BEYOND By Christina A. Clopton Submitted to Central European University Department of International Relations and European Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters of Arts Supervisor: Professor Alexander Astrov CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2014 Word Count: 12,928 Abstract The Constructivist paradigm of International Relations (IR) theory has provided for an ‘aesthetic turn’ in IR. This turn can be applied to popular culture in order to theorize about the international system. Using the case study of the James Bond film series, this paper investigates the continuing relevancy of the espionage series through the Cold War and beyond in order to reveal new information about the nature of the international political system. Using the concept of the ‘empty signifier,’ this work establishes the shifting identity of James Bond in relation to four thematic icons in the films: the villains, locations, women and technology and their relation to the international political setting over the last 50 years of the films. Bond’s changing identity throughout the series reveals an increasingly globalized society that gives prominence to David Chandler’s theory about ‘empire in denial,’ in which Western states are ever more reluctant to take responsibility for their intervention abroad. CEU eTD Collection i Acknowledgements I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Professor Alexander Astrov for taking a chance with me on this project and guiding me through this difficult process. I would also like to acknowledge the constant support and encouragement from my IRES colleagues through the last year.

  • James Bond 007 Analysis Codebook
1 James Bond 007 Analysis Codebook Kimberly A. Neuendorf, Ph.D. Patrika Janstova Sharon Snyder-Suhy Vito Flitt School of Communication, Cleveland State University & Thomas D. Gore, M.A. School of Communication Studies, Kent State University REVISED September 29, 2010 Unit of Data Collection: Each female character depicted in each Bond film who speaks in the film to any other character, or who does not speak but is introduced by another character, or who does not speak but is shown and referred to by another character, or is shown in close-up (i.e., head shot or head and shoulders shot), or engages in any codable sexual behavior, or experiences codable physical harm. When judging whether the female character speaks or is referred to, the coder must be able to both hear the female character and see that character’s mouth moving as she speaks, or must hear her name when she is introduced or referred to. In addition, only females that appear to be over the age of 18 will be coded (no teenagers or children). Other Coding Instructions: Do not code the opening or closing credits. For all coding, use only the information available to you as a viewer (i.e., do not use information you might have as a fan of Bond films, a fan of a particular actor, etc.). Code a female character’s use of weapons/target of weapons only from the point at which she becomes a codable character. That is, if early in the film, a group of undifferentiated (and uncodable) females are carrying guns, and then later one of them becomes codable because she kisses Bond, do not go back and code her earlier gun-carrying behavior.

  • Ian Fleming (1908–64), Novelist and Journalist
22 Ian Fleming (1908–64), Novelist and Journalist JOHN HATCHER Fleming at Yugawara hot spring in 1959 1959 TOKYO VISIT When Ian Fleming arrived in Japan in November 1959 dressed in his habitual lightweight dark blue suit, polka dot bow tie and moccasins, an ebony cigarette holder clamped between his teeth, he was only just coming into the first flush of his success as the creator of James Bond. Since Casino Royale (1953) he had published six Bond novels, with Goldfinger having been published a few months earlier. Film companies were sniffing around – Fleming himself favoured James Stewart or Richard Burton for Bond, with Hitchcock as director – but the world- wide Bond cult would not really take off until the first Bond movie in 1962. In any case, James Bond was far from Fleming’s mind. After churning out a book a year since 1952, he was growing weary of his hero, who seemed to be taking over his life. He was in Tokyo on an all- expenses-paid escape and escapade: the Sunday Times had dispatched him on a five-week tour of his personal canon of ‘the thrilling cities of the world’ – Hong Kong, Macao, Tokyo, Honolulu, Los Angeles, 221 BRITAIN & JAPAN: BIOGRAPHICAL PORTRAITS VOLUME VI Las Vegas, Chicago, New York.1 Unlike his friend Somerset Maugham, who had arrived by boat from Europe days earlier, Fleming was emphatically a post-war traveller, revelling in the speed of air travel, having arrived in the Far East on a BOAC Comet that took twenty-six hours from London to Hong Kong via Zurich, Beirut, Bahrain, New Delhi and Bangkok armed with a £803 19s.

  • The Man Who Save Britain
The Man Who Saved Britain By Simon Winder ISBN: 0330439545 Publisher: Picador Hardcover: 300 pages The Bookseller 'A winning blend of cultural history, biography and memoir... often laugh-out-loud funny.' Evening Standard 'One of the oddest books I have ever read... a very funny writer, as well as an incisive one' Introduction: Eating Old Jamaica at the Tunbridge Wells Odeon I am ten years old, sitting in a suburban English cinema. On the screen a man with a large chin and black roll-neck sweater pushes through jungle foliage. He crouches behind a gravestone and takes out an enormous pistol. A white woman has been tied to a post and a black man dressed in animal skins is laughing crazily and wielding a massive poisonous snake. Around them hundreds of voodoo worshippers are screaming and convulsing. The man with the large chin starts shooting the black people, who are too busy rolling their eyes and waving old cutlasses to offer proper resistance. To be honest my memory goes a bit hazy at this point. In a moment of bravado before the film I had bought a jumbo Old Jamaica, a weird 1970s chocolate bar filled with rum essence and raisins. It had struck me as a sophisticated treat, little realizing that its only target market was in fact aspirational ten-year-old boys. Anyway, the reality of feeling sick, the perception of being drunk, and the confusion of the notionally West Indian flavour of the treat and the loosely West Indian setting of the film conspired to overwhelm me.

Blood in the Water The boy crept up to the fence and looked around. There was the familiar sign . KEEP OUT! PRIVATE PROPERTY. TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT. And hanging next to it, just to make sure that the message was clearly understood, were the bodies of several dead animals. Strung up like criminals, wire twisted round their broken necks. He knew them so well; they were almost like old friends. There were rabbits with their eyes pecked out, tattered black crows with broken wings, a couple of foxes, a few rats, even a wildcat and a pine marten. In all the days he’d been coming here the boy had watched them slowly rotting away, until some of them were little more than flaps of dirty leather and yellow bones. But there were a couple of fresh ones since yesterday, a squirrel and another fox. Which meant that someone had been back. 1 Text copyright (c) Charlie Higson.
