Clopton Submitted to Central European University Department of International Relations and European Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters of Arts Supervisor: Professor Alexander Astrov CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2014 Word Count: 12,928 Abstract The Constructivist paradigm of International Relations (IR) theory has provided for an ‘aesthetic turn’ in IR. This turn can be applied to popular culture in order to theorize about the international system. Using the case study of the James Bond film series, this paper investigates the continuing relevancy of the espionage series through the Cold War and beyond in order to reveal new information about the nature of the international political system. Using the concept of the ‘empty signifier,’ this work establishes the shifting identity of James Bond in relation to four thematic icons in the films: the villains, locations, women and technology and their relation to the international political setting over the last 50 years of the films. Bond’s changing identity throughout the series reveals an increasingly globalized society that gives prominence to David Chandler’s theory about ‘empire in denial,’ in which Western states are ever more reluctant to take responsibility for their intervention abroad. LACMA presents …Is James Bond, co-organized with LMU’s School of Film and Television, June 9 – September 9, 2012 Exhibition features all twenty-two James Bond opening credit sequences, fourteen of which were created by film title designer Maurice Binder, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Bond franchise (LOS ANGELES, June 4, 2012) – The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents …Is James Bond, the first exhibition to feature the complete opening credit sequences from twenty-two James Bond films produced by Eon Productions. Co-organized by LACMA and Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television (SFTV), the exhibition celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of one of the most successful and long-lasting film franchises of all time: James Bond. SFTV Dean Stephen Ujlaki says, “Bond’s impact on popular culture is immense, from music to fashion and automobiles, and on the business side, the people who advanced the franchise deserve immense credit, among them LMU alumna Barbara Broccoli, and Eon Productions.” Over the course of fifty years and twenty-two films (soon to be twenty-three with the release of Skyfall), James Bond has gone from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, from the Soviets to the North Koreans, from M as a man to a woman, from secret nefarious organizations to power-mad tycoons. And while 007 was changing, the opening credit sequence remained constant. “Beginning with Dr. No, the opening credits, created by Maurice Binder, have functioned as pieces of art that comment on the films, while remaining separate from them,” says Elvis Mitchell, curator for Film Independent at LACMA. -

The increase was driven by the life seg- EXECUTIVE ment, where growth sharply increased over 2018 to +4.4% as China overcame its tem- porary, regulatory-induced setback and mature markets finally came to grips with low interest rates. P&C clocked the same rate of growth (+4.3%), down from +5.4% in 2018. SUMMARY Global premium income totaled EUR3,906bn in 2019 (life: EUR2,399bn, P&C: EUR1,507bn). Then, Covid-19 hit the world economy like a meteorite. The sudden stop of economic activity around the globe will batter insurance demand, too: Global premium income is expected to shrink by -3.8% in 2020 (life: -4.4%, P&C: -2.9%), three times the pace wit- nessed during the Global Financial Crisis. Compared to the pre-Covid-19 growth trend, the pandemic will shave around EUR358bn from the global premium pool (life: Michaela Grimm, Senior Economist EUR249bn, P&C: EUR109bn). Ranging from the films of the silent era to the present day, as well as much-loved TV productions, and modern day phenomenons such Harry Potter and Star Wars, the sale is expected to realise in excess of £500,000. Two superb selections of Audrey Hepburn and James Bond memorabilia lead the sale. The highlight of the Audrey Hepburn section is the sleek black Givenchy dress made for her in the much-loved 1961 classic film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This famous dress was personally donated to the current owners, Monsieur and Madame Lapierre by Hubert de Givenchy, who designed Hepburn’s wardrobe for the film. It has an estimate of £50,000-70,000 and is being auctioned on behalf of the charity City of Joy Aid, which benefits the under-privileged in India. Other Hepburn highlights include an exquisite black Givenchy two-piece cocktail suit from the 1963 film Charade (estimate £8,000-12,000) which is as wearable today as it was then, an original costume design by Edith Head for Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina, 1954, (estimate £3,000-5,000) and a selection of original cinema posters, photographs and autograph material associated with the films Hepburn starred in (estimates start at £200). -

The director is Sam Mendes and the screenwriters are Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. The main actors are Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Bérénice Marlohe, Naomie Harris and Ralph Fiennes. Daniel Craig plays the leading role of secret agent James Bond and Judi Dench acts the role of M. During his mission in Istanbul and covered by his agent Eve, Bond tries to catch a man. Eve accidentally shoots Bond who falls into the river and is believed to be dead. A few months later, there is an attack against the MI6. In the meantime,James Bond who is not dead, decides to return to London. When the MI6 is threatened his mission leads him to a former agent named Silva. He is determined to kill M for high treason. Bond and M hide in Bond’s family manor in Scotland. Silva finds their tracks. James Bond kills him. Later, M dies from her wounds. In 2013, the film "Skyfall" won a BAFTA Award for best British film. The same year, the singer Adèle won an Oscar for the best song . Daniel Craig is the greatest actor in Britain. He is so talented. I'm crazy about him. The film knows an international success. Léa Courbe « Edward Scissorhands » is my favourite film. It vas directed and produced by Tim Burton, who is the best director in the world but he has got crazy ideas! Jonnhy Depp plays the role of Edward. -
