BY JENS KOCH he history of divers’ watches at Omega began not only at an ex - T tremely early point in time but with a timekeeper that was better known for its elegance than its robust construc - tion. This is not surprising, for it was the age of art deco and thus rectangular watches. In 1932, the Omega Marine was already defining revolutionary case making: a double case ensured water re - sistance, while a tensioning lever pushed the inner case against a leather seal. The outer crystal was crafted in scratchproof sapphire, a rarity at the time. The watch was available in rust-free Staybrite steel as well as in gold. Linguistica Silesiana 32, 2011 ISSN 0208-4228 MAŁGORZATA GOLA-BRYDNIAK University of Silesia THE WORD IS NOT ENOUGH? A LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF JAMES BOND FILM TITLES It is undisputable that the James Bond movies constitute the longest and the most successful series in the history of cinema.. The titles of particular movies may be treated as specifi c brand names contributing to the commercial success of the fi lms. Successful brands, in turn, are developed and evaluated with the participation of lin- guists. The article analyses them from the perspective of the linguistic features of a successful brand name. The analysis focuses on the relationship between the titles and the fi lm plot. It also covers the identifi cation of the lexical and grammatical features of the titles. The author will endeavour to prove that linguistic features have played a vital role in the creation and the promotion of the 007 myth. 1. Introduction The James Bond movies constitute probably the longest and the most succes- sful series in the history of cinema. James Bond and his accomplishments are a source of excitement, suspense and fun. However, the fi rst exciting experience, prior to watching a new fi lm, is the title that attracts attention and contributes to the promotion and commercial success of each new movie.

49 UP A Film by Michael Apted 135 minutes, color & b/w, 2005, UK First Run Features 630 Ninth Avenue, Suite 1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600/Fax (212) 989-7649 email: [email protected] www.firstrunfeatures.com SYNOPSIS 49 Up , the latest installment of Granada’s landmark documentary series, revisits the group of people whose lives have been documented since they were seven, to see where they are now as they approach their half century. The original Seven Up was broadcast in 1964 as a one-off World in Action Special featuring children who were selected from different backgrounds and social spheres to talk about their hopes and dreams for the future. As members of the generation who would be running the country by the year 2000, what did they think they would become? Inspired by World in Action founder Tim Hewat’s passionate interest in both the Jesuit saying “Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man” and the rigid class system of 1960s Britain, Seven Up set out to discover whether or not the children’s lives were pre-determined by their backgrounds. The result was ground-breaking television – the very first example of a program recording real people living real lives – and the follow-up films have won an array of awards. Director Michael Apted, who has since moved to Hollywood to direct films including Gorky Park , The Coal Miner’s Daughter , The World Is Not Enough and Gorillas in the Mist , has returned every seven years to chart the children’s progress through life.

  • Bond Rerouted: 007 and the Internal Conflict In/Of Digital Media
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2013 Bond Rerouted: 007 and the Internal Conflict in/of Digital Media Binotto, Johannes Abstract: While the James Bond that we know from the movies is equipped with almost superhuman qualities, the original character in Ian Fleming’s novels seems much more fragile. Being in constant battle not only with the political enemy but also with his internal, neurotic conflicts, Bond needs his missions as defense mechanisms to prevent him from psychological breakdown. This essay argues that the second to last installment of the Bond movie series, the 2008 film Quantum of Solace finally confronts this neurotic aspect of 007, not so much by psychologizing the character but rather by transposing internal conflict to the filmic level. The complex visual strategies of digitally enhanced filmmaking, with its over-determined images, depict a conflicted war zone where not only the secret agent but also the very system heis defending is shown as being ultimately split and pitted against itself. • Read a Spoiler-Free Review of Quantum of Solace
This spoiler-free review of QUANTUM OF SOLACE was first published in Swedish on 22-10-2008 THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR THE JAMES BOND PHENOMENON… By Anders Frejdh, proprietor and editor of the only bi-lingual website in the world in both Swedish and English - FROM SWEDEN WITH LOVE - www.jamesbond007.se The wait is over; James Bond is back after the fantastic film in 2006 - CASINO ROYALE – which gave the phenomenon an exceptional kick forward never seen before. This year’s film – QUANTUM OF SOLACE – is the 22nd in the most successful film series of all time and James Bond is played for a se- cond time by the Chester-born actor Daniel Craig. The rest of the cast include experienced actors from many different countries. A Swede even appears briefly in one of the scenes. The title QUANTUM OF SOLACE comes from the name of one of the short stories in Ian Fleming’s short story collection FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. It was first published on April 11, 1960 by the British publishing house Jonathan Cape. (The collection was first published in Sweden by Albert Bonnier in 1962 but QUANTUM OF SOLACE is not in the Swedish translation.) The film continues more or less right after the final scene of the last film bit except for the title, -QUAN TUM OF SOLACE has no connection with Ian Fleming’s short story. Without revealing too much it starts with a car chase which ends when ”James Bond” and ”M” interrogates ”Mr. White” (again played by the Dane, Jesper Christensen) which Bond just about had traced down when CASINO ROYALE ends.
