Omega Speedmaster - A TIME CAPSULE WORLD MOOK MONO Special Edition Edited & Written by Kesaharu Imai Published by WORLD PHOTO PRESS A TIME CAPSULE—Omega Speedr~raster Front Cover: A TIME CAPSULE—Omega Speedmaster The story of the first watch in outer space. Edited & written by Kesaharu Imai. P2 As we make the transition into the twenty-first century, the Omega Speedmaster, small enough to fit in the palm of the hand, is in itself a time capsule of the twentieth century. P3 Foreword, The setting sun on a late autumn afternoon set scene for a visit from Mr Imai when he came to my office at the Van Nuys airport located in a suburb of Los Angeles. The creaking of the ffont stair5, as he entered the building, was reminicient of the erie awakening cry of a space craft preparing for laumch. I began my first Space Flight aboard Mercury-Atlas 9 thirty-three years ago! In looking back to those days, Mr Imai and I talked enthusiastically about the Omega Speedmaster, which served as a reliable personal tool throughout my mission duration completing 22 5 orbits around the earth! An impression of the universe was beyond my expectation and imagination. As a glimpse of limitdessness followed by an awe-inspiring view of the eatth are indeed indescribable. Being overwhelmed by an unprecedented experience I was not myself for some time till I noted the positive movement of ht e second hand on the Speedmaster, which in fact recorded such data as elapsed flight time and fuel consumption. "The development of science and technology today is undoubtedly the result of human wisdom which I believe stemmed from the passionate but romantic pursuit of scientists and engineers, said Me Imai. -

During the conference several wives Wheaton-Smith’s Illustrating Shadows. took tours of Chicago and of the Chicago Art Museum with its special exhibition on Toulouse-Lautrec. Roger Bailey then showed how to program the programmable scientific calculator included in each registration packet. In doing so, he provided solutions to some of the equations useful in creating dials. Most actually got them to work! After a continental breakfast on Friday we boarded the bus to visit first the Museum of Science and Industry to see dials in their collection, including a fine example of a first-century (AD) dial, adjudged to be a slight variant of a hemisphaerium. -

Diving with the Seahorse
DIVING WITH THE SEAHORSE Omega has achieved a great deal in divers’ watches and was a true pioneer in water-sealed timepieces. The Omega seahorse symbolizing water resistance has even become one of the best known logos. BY JENS KOCH he history of divers’ watches at Omega began not only at an ex - T tremely early point in time but with a timekeeper that was better known for its elegance than its robust construc - tion. This is not surprising, for it was the age of art deco and thus rectangular watches. In 1932, the Omega Marine was already defining revolutionary case making: a double case ensured water re - sistance, while a tensioning lever pushed the inner case against a leather seal. The outer crystal was crafted in scratchproof sapphire, a rarity at the time. The watch was available in rust-free Staybrite steel as well as in gold. A strap crafted in seal leather guaranteed resistance to salt wa - ter, and the folding clasp offered length adjustment. In an extreme temperature test in 1936, three Marine models were placed The Omega Marine, introduced in 1932, with a in water heated to 85° C (185° F) for double case, sapphire crystal, and a strap made of four minutes and then lowered 73 meters saltwater-resistant seal leather HISTORY Omega Seamaster The foundations of a grand line: Seamaster models from 1948, The Seamaster Professional 600 from 1970, nicknamed ProPlof, Those who put their lives on the line need a good watch on their wrists: The Seamaster Professional 100 0m/330 0ft from 1971 with one of them in chronometer version with a monocoque case and security button for the rotating bezel an Omega ad from 1970 for the Seamaster Professional 600 a monocoque case was Omega’s most water-resistant watch. -

It contains nothing new except the post script. If you have already read the post, please disregard.) Hi all: In preparation for purchasing an Omega Speedmaster Professional, I have done the obligatory research on the use of the Speedmaster in the NASA space program. Chuck Maddox's excellent article on Omega's history with the Apollo program revealed some interesting facts that I did not know. In brief: The cal. 321 Speedmasters were purchased by NASA for the astronauts' use prior to the introduction of the cal. 861 movement in 1968. Apparently it is generally accepted that only the cal. 321 Speedmasters were worn on the moon during the various moon missions, as the initial procurement of these watches around 1965 was distributed to all astonauts at that time (two each) with as many as twenty still left in inventory and never used following the final Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Apparently, there is no evidence that a cal. 861 Speedmaster was worn by any of the moonwalkers or that NASA had procured any cal. -

Check the OLC-CLO site. 1 ABOUT Introduction NACLO is a fun (and educational!) contest for U.S. and Canadian high school students in which contestants compete by solving compelling and creative puzzles in linguistics and computational linguistics. Requiring no previous knowledge of linguistics, languages, or computing, these puzzles can be solved by analytic reasoning alone, and serve as a fun introduction to a field to which many high school students have never been introduced. Winners of NACLO are eligible to compete in the International Linguistics Olympiad, one of twelve international high school science Olympiads. Contact [email protected] What’s New in 2021? We have released an addendum detailing our COVID-19 contingency plans. It will continue to be updated throughout the months leading up to the competition. University sites will also be updating their NACLO websites to reflect the situation on their campuses. Contest in Canada The Anglophone contest in Canada takes place jointly with the contest in the United States. As of the writing of this version of the handbook, the dates for the 2021 Francophone contest in Canada have not been announced. -
