Our Lost World Introduction Understanding why this VBS program was developed is important to the faith of young people. You will notice that the Biblical accounts included are The Creation, The Fall, The Flood, The Birth, Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus and The Second Coming of Christ. The teacher must understand that these five events form the entirety of the gospel. Still, you may ask, ―I thought the gospel was just about the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus?‖ The gospel includes the work of the son of God as Savior, but also involves much more. It is interesting to observe that the word ―gospel‖ appears in the New Testament 101 times. The first time it appears is in Matthew 4:23: Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. (NKJV, emphasis added) Please note that the word ―gospel‖ is here connected to the Kingdom. This refers to that time when Jesus will return, set up His Kingdom, of which there will be no end. Thus, this use of the term ―gospel‖ is in direct association with the believer‘s hope. The Gospel of Hope! The middle time the word ―gospel‖ appears in the New Testament is found in I Corinthians 15:1-4 (i.e., there are fifty uses of the word before and after this particular appearance in the New Testament): ―Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received; that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures...‖ (NKJV, emphasis added) Uniquely, in this passage the term ―gospel‖ is used in direct association with Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. Thus, the power of Christ to save is emphasized. So this is the Gospel of Power! Finally, the last appearance of the term ―gospel” in the New Testament is found in Revelation 14:6-7 Then I saw another flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth -to every nation, tribe, tongue and people- saying with a loud voice, ―Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, and sea and springs of water.” (NKJV, emphasis added) Here the angel has the ―everlasting gospel” from which to preach to all mankind. When he opens his mouth and begins preaching, the first words to fall from his lips are: ‖...Fear God...give glory to Him...worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.‖ Hence the ―everlasting gospel” is all about the Creator: His

5 sovereignty and authority. Thus, He is the Foundation of all things. Therefore when the Bible speaks of the gospel it includes three vital elements, the absence of any, would reduce the gospel to an ineffective idea. Religion only! Nothing more! These elements in order of importance are: 1. Creation. 2. The life, death, burial and resurrection of Christ. 3. The Second Coming of Christ. HOPE

POWER

FOUNDATION Why is this order important? Because unless Jesus Christ is the great Creator, He cannot be the other two! All rests on the history and reality of Genesis. Since this generation has received a double portion of doubt and skepticism about the authenticity of Genesis, grasping the foundational nature of this program is important for the teacher of these lessons. King David said, ―If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?‖ Psalms 11:3. Furthermore, to give additional emphasis to this reality, I want to cite John 3:12: ―If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things.‖ (NKJV) In this verse Jesus is telling Nicodemus to consider what he can see to help him believe what he can‘t see. In other words, Jesus said if I tell you things about the earth, things you can go out and check (things like: a worldwide flood and the fact that God created all animals-- including dinosaurs--with man on day six of the creation week), and if you still don‘t believe my words, how will you believe Me about those heavenly things you can‘t go check. What we are trying to do with this curriculum is to provide a place for your students to check the ―earthly things” that Jesus told us about; such things as a worldwide flood, dinosaurs and man created on the same day, etc. The literal history of Genesis must be true for the promises of the New Testament to be dependable. You as a VBS teacher must arise above the mentality that our VBS program is just a project that your church does each year and this is your year to participate. Please be informed that conservative Christian families have been losing 65% to 80% of their own children by age fifteen to secular philosophy. This is due largely to the work of Barney, Bill Nye, Disney, museums, textbooks, and other sources, all which have made the Bible appear non-scientific and non-historical. Take this opportunity to carefully relate to your students what Jesus said about the earth can be fully checked, and when it is carefully checked, it is always true. So they can completely believe and fully trust the words of Jesus about what they cannot seeheavenly things! Let this be your motto for the week of VBS.

6

TEACHING DISCIPLES TO TRUST THE BIBLE’S HISTORY FOR ITS ACCURACY, SO THEY WILL TRUST THE BIBLE’S PROMISE FOR THEIR DESTINY. Remember, Genesis is foundational to all that is written in the New Testament. Don‘t be afraid to check its history and science. When you do, it always checks true. What a thrill it will be to share the promise of Jesus with your students.

Sincerely, Dr. G. Thomas Sharp

Notes Week Overview

Day 1 - THE STORY OF CREATION (Lesson 1 -- The Perfect Garden) God created the world in six literal days just a few thousand years ago (between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago). The world was created perfect. There was no sin, devil, death, pain or suffering of any kind. Man nor animals were created to eat meat, only plants (fruits, vegetables, and nuts, etc.). The six days of the first week form the basis of the fourth commandment. In Genesis 1:1 we see the initial creation of God when He created the space/mass/time continuum. At this time, early on day one, the earth was still empty and uninhabited. In the remaining six days God used these first created components from day one (space/mass/time) and formed or made them into a perfect world. God made light, water, atmosphere, dry land, plants, the sun and moon, stars, water animal and flying animals, land animals and man by the end of day six. Dinosaurs or lizards (reptiles) were created on day six. There was no death on the earth until man sinned. Man was created in the image of God. Therefore, he is not an animal. Man was created for fellowship with God. Man separated himself from God through sin and was banished from the Garden of Eden due to his sin. Death on the earth is the result of sin. God gave us the ability to choose: to follow Him, to choose what is right when we are faced with temptations. It is our choice to put God first in our lives. God has a plan in place for our salvation. We must accept Jesus as our Savior and follow the Word of God.

Day 2 - THE STORY OF THE FALL (Lesson Two -- The Garden is Cursed) Man discovers that pain, sorrow, and death are the consequences of his sin and disobedience. Dinosaurs did not bring death into the world, but man did! The world has changed. Now man has to work hard and toil for his food. Adam and Eve‘s descendants spread out and built cities. People grew further away from God and are becoming more and more evil. Sin separated man from God. We are all sinners. No one is to blame for our sin except us. God gave us the ability to choose right from wrong and ability to follow Him or not. God must be heartbroken to look down and see what man is now like. God is willing to forgive us of our sins, if we repent and confess our sins.

Day 3 - THE FLOOD (The Water Garden-The Cursed World Destroyed)

10

Notes Sin overtook the world eventually. God found Noah to be the only righteous man and granted him grace along with his family. God‘s heart was filled with sorrow and pain when He looked at creation. Noah obeyed God‘s command to build the ark and to preach the word even though the people ridiculed him. God destroyed His creation with a flood, except Noah and his family. God made a promise with man that He would never destroy the world again with water. The present earth can only be understood in light of a past catastrophe like Noah‘s flood. Rock layers, fossils, wide spread extinction, the ice age, continental break-up and movement, canyons, mountains, etc., can only be understood in light of a violent worldwide catastrophe called Noah‘s Flood. To ignore this evidence leaves one hopelessly lost to understand this data. Further, we should be willing to stand up for God just as Noah was, even if we are the only one. We should choose to obey God just as Noah did. We must let God be true and every man a liar. Do you think of God‘s promise when you see a rainbow? Before creation, God had a plan for our salvation through Jesus. Because there was a Flood, the Apostle Peter says the ―same word‖ of God will bring the next worldwide judgment. This time it will be fire that destroys the earth. The Ark of safety is a person this time and not a boat. His name is Jesus Christ.

Day 4 – JESUS’ LIFE DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION (Lesson Four – The Garden of Redemption –The Lost World Redeemed) Jesus was the last Adam; the first Adam sinned and brought death into the world. The last Adam paid the price for our sins and restored to us eternal life. Jesus set the example for our lives while He was here on earth. He willingly gave His life to cover our sins. Jesus had to pay the price for our sins. To restore our fellowship with God Jesus arose from the dead to be our living Savior. He arose from the dead because He was the great Creator. We should choose to accept Jesus as our personal Savior and give our life to Him. God had this plan for us since creation.

Day 5 - ETERNITY (Lesson Five – The New Garden – The Lost World Renewed) Heaven is our destiny, promised to us by Jesus Christ, our Creator and Savior. We can believe His words and promise about Heaven, because His words and stories about the earth are true. Heaven is a beautiful, perfect place prepared for us by Christ to have eternal fellowship with God. Heaven is for each of us who believe and follow Christ. There is also a place for the nonbeliever called hell. God‘s plan is for each of us to be in eternity with Him. It is up to each of us to accept Christ as our Savior. Christ is returning soon. Be sure you are in the Ark!

Our Lost World MISSION LESSONS

Introduction (The information in this section is extremely important for the teacher to know about the ministry and purpose of Creation Truth Foundation.) Notes

This material can be used in the Mission‘s Class as additional support for the main curriculum. The teacher must adapt this material to his/her appropriate grade level. The lessons will be valuable to teach the students about Biblical worldview in the same context as Creation Truth Foundation takes to schools, universities, churches and other organizations throughout the United States and many other countries. Dr. Sharp founded Creation Truth Foundation(CTF) in 1989. The main purpose for CTF is to help parents, teachers, students, and ministers battle the problem evolution has created in our homes, churches and culture. As a minister and teacher, Dr. Sharp realized how Darwinian evolution with all of its variables had become the leading influence in the American culture, and thus influencing the lives of students from early childhood through college. He observed that after age fifteen we are losing many of our own Christian children to secular philosophy. Without a firm faith in the historical accuracy of Genesis, the student is left without foundation or authority to believe the rest of Scripture. They want to believe the creation story, but are confused because of what they are being taught through media, entertainment, museums and in their classes in science, history, etc. Dr. Sharp also realized the dinosaur story being told to our small children was the biggest deception being used by the liberal social engineers, and families and churches are not addressing these issues adequately. Therefore, he now takes the traveling museum all over the United States to tell the TRUTH ABOUT DINOSAURS and the Six Days of Creation according to Genesis 1, because Genesis forms the foundation for all other Biblical reality. We pray that this VBS program will sufficiently assist you in the achievement of your educational objectives during your VBS week.

The Creation Truth Foundation Motto is based on John 3:12

Teaching disciples to trust the Bible’s history for its accuracy so they will trust the Bible’s promise for their destiny.

Notes Our Lost World LESSON ONE DAYS OF CREATION Scripture: Genesis 1-2:3

Target Verse: (Hebrew 11:3a) By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God‘s command…

Lesson Aim  To Know: God made everything out of nothing in 6 days, less than 10,000 years ago. Man and Dinos lived together. Man did not evolve; he was created in God‘s own image.  To Feel: Confident that the Bible is totally accurate in its description of how the earth and everything on earth came to be. Also to feel a sense of awe for the power of God, which created all that we see.  To Do: To respect the Word of God; to trust God‘s description of creation because of the fact that He was the only one present when creation occurred. To intelligently reject the false teaching of evolution, the ―big bang‖ theory, spontaneous generation (something from nothing), missing links, etc.

TEACHER’S MEDITATION In order to convey excitement to the children about creation, we first must be excited about it ourselves. Stop right now and ask God to give you a glimpse of what it must have been like as the world took shape, as the sun gave off it‘s first rays of light. Ask Him to share with you the excitement of seeing the first bird to soar through the air or the first blooming flower. Creation is the foundation of our Christian faith. If God didn‘t do everything just like Genesis 1 reports, we might as well throw our Bibles away. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, God created man in His own image. Many people in the world today don‘t believe what we so often take for granted. There was a time in the world when many people believed it, but today this isn‘t so. School textbooks, newspaper articles, museums, documentaries, magazine articles and news stories most often teaches the evolutionary worldview. Dinosaurs are believed to have lived millions of years ago, and certainly not at the same time as man. Do you understand what this one idea does to the truth of Christ‘s first coming and the work of the cross? Pray that God will give you wisdom, discernment and much excitement about teaching this most important lesson.

5

WELCOME TIME Have everything ready before the children come into the classroom. Use one or more of the interest builders listed below to get your class excited about hearing today‘s mission lesson. Each lesson helps to reinforce the mission statement of Creation Truth Foundation.

Mission Active Options LEGO CREATION

Materials Needed: Divide your class into two groups. Supply enough Lego bricks for one  Lego bricks group to successfully build a small house. Put a number of Lego bricks  2 Containers (about 100) into a shoebox, place the lid on the box, and have the children shake the box and then look at the result. Repeat this five times, and see if any orderly arrangement can be identified by the students. Then you can explain the difference between chance and design by our Creator, to produce order.

CREATION SACKS

Materials Needed: Before class, prepare Creation Sacks. Each student in your class will  Lunch sacks need one. (Or you may wish to have partners, if your class size is  Play dough  Toothpicks large) Use lunch sacks. Place the following items in the sack: play  Popsicle sticks dough, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, and/or pieces of plastic straw (the  Plastic straws  Glue sack that you place the Popsicle sticks, plastic straw should have a  Candy prize small bottle of Elmer‘s glue.) However, leave a few of the sacks completely empty. Each sack-except for the empty one(s) should contain exactly the same amounts of clay and other materials. After your children arrive, send them to different corners of the room, as far apart as possible. Tell them that you have a project for each of them to complete. They will have five minutes to make something from the material that is in their sack.. Tell them that at the end of five minutes you will have a prize for those who quietly complete the task (maybe a piece of candy). That means no talking! They‘re not to tell anyone what‘s inside their bags! They cannot use the sack itself. If someone has a question about their sack, they should raise their hand, and you will come help them. At the end of the five minutes have everyone stop. Quickly ask the children to show and tell what they made. Line the creations up at the front of the room for later reference. Obviously, the children with the empty bags will not have made anything. Ask them why not, but don‘t comment. The application will come later.

6

Notes (Sometime in the lesson explain that after opening the sack I gave you, you made something with the things you found in the sack, but some of you did not create anything. If the person with the empty sack had made something with the nothing in the sack, we could say he created something out of nothing. But that did not happen because no one has the ability to make something out of nothing. Only God can do that.) TO CREATE MEANS TO MAKE SOMETHING FROM NOTHING

DINOSAUR DESIGN Have the children draw their favorite dinosaur. Emphasize how hard it was just to draw a dinosaur- let alone create one. If it takes a lot of intelligence to draw a dinosaur, it must have taken MUCH MORE intelligence to create one in the first place.

Mission Lesson

Opening Creation Truth Foundation believes that one of the most important verses in the Bible is the very first verse you read: Genesis 1:1 ―In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.‖ Today I want you to get a grip on the fact that God created the entire universe, including our ancestors and us. The record of Creation in Genesis is very important. What you will be hearing today is not what you will be hearing in the classroom. Many of you have already read in your science textbooks about the theories or guesses of how old the earth may be. You may have watched programs on TV about dinosaurs and the earth. You may have heard that dinosaurs lived on the earth millions of years before men and women walked on the earth. You may have heard that man evolved (or changed very gradually) from a monkeylike creature into you and I. These theories or guesses are all very popular today and many of your friends, relatives and some of your schoolteachers may believe them. There are even very intelligent scientists who believe them. However, today I want you to think for yourself. What does the Bible teach? I want you to think about ―In the beginning‖. Who was there ―in the beginning‖? Only God was around and so only God is qualified to speak with authority and accuracy on the topic of creation (or how

7

everything came into existence). It is amazing how similar the Biblical view and the scientific view are!

BIBLICAL HISTORY TIMELINE

Materials Needed: Have some students hold each end of rope tight. Then place students  Rope or string or note cards with historical events on the rope. One end is creation  Note cards and the other is the present date. Examples: Genesis Flood 1600 years after creation, B.C.-A.D. point, Jesus dying on cross, Columbus, etc. As part of our national history, we know that President John F. Kennedy was killed in 1963. Were you alive in 1963? No: so you cannot speak with authority and accuracy about what happened in 1963. Although many of your parents and grandparents were alive when President Kennedy was assassinated and they can tell you exactly what they saw, what they heard and what they felt on the day that our president died. So who can tell about the days of creation? Who can speak with authority and accuracy about what happened? The only one who can tell us is God, because He was the only one present at the time of creation. Everyone here today can only look at what evidence remains here and try to guess what happened.

Optional – With older It would be like coming upon a car accident in the middle of the students use the following desert. If no one survived the accident, you would have to try to look example For younger students at all of the evidence and figure out what happened. The best you please come up with a could come up with would be a guess. If you could determine that one similar example of the drivers had alcohol in his blood, you might conclude that he lost his sense of judgment and veered into the other car. However, the other driver may have simply fallen asleep at the wheel and been the cause of the accident. The evidence could be interpreted in different ways. That‘s the problem we have in looking at the fossil evidence and the geological or rock evidence that can be looked at today. Scientists try to make a good guess, but when they ignore the Bible and its Author, they give up the only witness who was there at the actual time the world began.

Optional – Have your Now let‘s look at what God says happened. Read Verses 1-5 in students fill out the Days Genesis. of Creation worksheet starting at this point rather I believe that vs. 1 is the beginning of day one. It tells us that God than during the closing. started with nothing and created something. As people, we take what God has already created and fashion it into something new. But man has never created something out of nothing. Vs. 2 tells us that when things had just started the earth was formless and empty, which means the earth was incomplete and uninhabitable. At this point in 8

Notes God‘s creative activity, the earth was yet unfashioned and uninhabited. Vs. 3 tells us that God created light. At this point, it is not sunlight because the sun was not created until the fourth day, but it was God himself. In verse 5 God did a wonderful thing. He divided the light from darkness and called light day and darkness He called night. From that time day and night were in covenant with their Creator and could only have 12 hours in each day (The teacher must familiarize themselves with Jeremiah 33:19-21 that explains the covenant God made with day and night). So God said the evening and the morning is one day! We believe the Bible is the literal word of God: which means that God inspired every word, which was recorded, including this word. Some people believe that chapters 1 & 2 are two separate creation accounts. They believe that the days of creation were not literal days, but periods of time. Those people will claim in chapter 2 after some undetermined amount of time has passed we are told about Adam and Eve, who were not the only people God created. If God had meant a longer span of time, there are other words like generations and ages and spans of time. But God chose to use the word ―day‖ which in every other part of the Old Testament means a 24-hour period of time, or a group of 24-hour days. Is God powerful enough to create the world in 6 days? Of course! God could have created the universe in one day or even in one minute if he wanted to do it that way, but he didn‘t. Instead He chose to work 6 days and rest on the seventh day giving us an example to follow, by establishing our seven day week. Was God tired? No, Almighty God never gets tired. He simply stopped doing the work of creating and rested as an example for us. Remember, Paul teaches us (Romans 5:12, I Corinthians 15:21) that death entered the world because of man‘s (Adam‘s) sin. Not Dinosaurs! If this is not true then Christ died for nothing. Think about this! There was no pain, suffering or death in the world until Adam sinned. All of the Creation happened in just 6 days? God says it did! If you are a Christian, that should settle the question. God said it, so I believe it. What about the evidence? Some of your friends may find it hard to believe that it only took 6 days for the earth to be formed and all of the animals to be created. Answer a simple question, how old was Adam when he was created? Obviously he was just one day old. How old did Adam look? He probably looked as if he was an adult. If Adam had the appearance of age, could the earth itself have the appearance of age? Is there evidence of a relatively young earth, say 10,000 years as opposed to billions of years old? Yes! Again we must look at the 9

evidence in a fresh way instead of the way many scientists tell you to look at it. The sun is burning itself up at a rate of 2 to 5 feet per hour. This means that just 100,000 years ago the sun would be twice its present size. It would have been much too large for life on earth to have existed. Furthermore, some believe the Mississippi River formed about 2 million years ago. However, the delta that has formed at the mouth of the river at New Orleans has been growing at 262 feet each year. So its present size will only allow the river to be 4,400 years old. That dates the Mississippi River‘s origin back to the Genesis Flood. Next we have to ask, did animals begin as simple, one-celled animals and evolve into more complex creatures all the way up to man? The evidence does not support this theory. All the links are missing between fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and man. It is not just one missing link but millions of links are missing. Why are they missing? As a matter of fact not one missing link has ever been found in the fossil record! Don‘t you think the answer is that God made all kinds to reproduce their own kind and that alone? The question each of us must answer is; ―Who can you trust?‖ Will you trust a man who was not there when it happened and is only guessing about the evidence he has today? Or will you trust the God who created all things and was the only one there to tell us exactly how it all happened? Who is your authority, God or man? Let‘s pray now and commit ourselves to trust in God even if we don‘t have complete understanding of all that he has done in the past. We know that he is our Creator and he would never lie to us.

CLOSING

DAYS OF CREATION WORKSHEET

Materials Needed: Let‘s quickly go through the days of creation and you can fill in the  Copies of Days of blanks on your paper: (use NIV as your reference). These worksheets Creation Worksheet  Pencils are included, see pages 10-12. At the beginning of day one, God created the Heavens and the earth. At the beginning of the first day, the earth was formless and empty. God also created light on the first day and called the light day and the darkness night. The evening and the morning was the first day. On day two, God separated the water from the water and the expanse he called the sky. On day three, God made dry ground and gathered the water into one place. God called the dry ground land and the waters He called seas.

10

Notes On day three, God also created vegetation or plants of all kinds. All of the kinds of vegetation could only reproduce it‘s own kind. On day four, God made two great lights in the heavens. The greater light was to govern the day and the lesser light was to govern the night. God made the lights in the sky (expanse) to separate the day from the night and to mark the seasons and days and years. On day five, God made the creatures of the sea or water and every kind of winged birds. On day six, God created livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to it‘s kind. So God created all land animals on day six. On day six, God also created man in his own image and likeness, and let them rule over the fish, birds, livestock and all the creatures that move along the ground. God created man in His own image, both male and female He created them. God created seed-bearing plants and all fruit trees to be food for man and every green plant to be food for animals. So God did not create animals to eat flesh, He created green plants to be their food. Seven times God called His creation good. (Can you find the verses)? After day six the earth was no longer formless and empty, it was very good.

3 Introduction to OUR LOST WORLD

Preschool Division Babies – Age 5

―And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor Notes with God and men.‖ Luke 2:52

The church can provide the best materials, equipment, supplies and building space but the teacher that trains, plans, prays and cares is the key to any child‘s learning experiences at church. Understanding what a preschooler is capable of learning is important to the preschool teacher.

Preschool teachers are important because they help preschoolers develop feelings and attitudes about God, Jesus, church and the Bible. Preschool teachers lay an early, solid foundation that will be built upon the rest of a child‘s life. Preschoolers think and understand from their life experiences. We, as teachers, can build on those experiences by providing new enriching activities. Preschoolers are just learning how to pray. No certain position is necessary to pray. Preschoolers do not have to close their eyes and bow their heads to talk to God. They need to know they can talk to God anywhere, anytime. Preschoolers are literal-minded. Use words they can understand. (Avoid words like Savior, God‘s house, God‘s book, ―This Little Light of Mine‖) Use Bible stories that preschoolers can understand. The resurrection is too complicated for them to comprehend. Preschoolers will relate God‘s love for them to the love they receive from their earthly father. Preschoolers are self-centered. They are not ready to share or take turns until becoming an older two year old. They are beginning to learn these concepts. When disputes occur they are easily distracted with a new toy or activity. Understanding how Bible verses can be applied to their lives is more important than memorization. First they understand, then they can memorize. 5 Notes Class/Time Schedule

If your VBS schedule allows you to have your children in class at two different times, you may want to do group time/Bible story first. Then, if time allows, the children can choose an area to play, or you may have time for a ―low-maintenance‖ art activity. You may want to save a more involved, or ―high-maintenance‖ art activity for the next time period. Do not feel that every child needs to participate in art. Some children enjoy the other areas and may want to spend their time there. Encourage a teacher/helper to spend time with the shy or alone child sharing the story and Bible verses. If you are teaching Babies and Ones, obviously you will have the children for the entire VBS time schedule. It is not recommended for ones, twos, or threes to rotate classes. It is important for preschoolers to have consistency in their classes. It will enrich their learning and still give them a feeling of security when learning centers stay the same, but different activities occur within the learning centers.

Group Time

Group time can be adjusted according to the ages of the children. The younger the child, the shorter their attention span. Ages two and under need not have a group time. Ten minutes is probably long enough for group time for most preschoolers. When working with little ones, a teacher will teach out of ―overflow‖ knowledge. It is important for the teacher to study the lesson until they are saturated. They will be more comfortable and confident in any teaching situation. Throughout the entire class time, knowledge will ‗spill out‘ into the children as the teacher spends time with them. Babies will begin developing feelings and attitudes toward God, Jesus, church and family very early, so it is important for us to insure they have good experiences while they are at church. Instead of having a ―group time‖ with these very small ones, let them choose which areas they would like to play. Play is how preschoolers learn. Join them in their play and share Bible thoughts, or parts of the Bible story as they play. Make the story or Bible thought applicable to what they are doing. (Example: As Garrett plays with the play dough you might say, ―Garrett, the Bible says ‗God made us.‘ Thank you, God, for Garrett‘s hands to play with the play dough.‖ You have just shared the Bible thought with Garrett and also voiced a prayer. Now he is learning that he can talk to God anywhere or anytime.) This literature will guide you to recognize opportunities to say Bible thoughts or parts of the story in their play.

6 Notes Organizing the Classroom

In using this curriculum, do not feel the need to use every activity listed. In your room, set up areas for the following: Daily Life, Blocks, Books, Puzzles, Art, and Nature. Your attention will be needed in the art area the most. When the children finish their art activity, they may choose another area in which to play. If there is a teacher in that other area, encourage them to discuss the Bible story or verses as they play. Each activity in the room will center around the Bible story for that day. There are many activities listed for each day. This is to give you more choices of what might work for you. You may choose one activity for each learning center. In the art area, you may want to choose two. It is always better to have too many activities planned, than not enough.

A Preschooler learns…

 By example. They enjoy imitating what others around them are doing. (Daily Life)  Through play. Play for a preschooler is really a lot of work. Play becomes a Bible learning activity when it has a spiritual purpose. (Daily Life, Blocks)  Through relationships. When she has caring teachers and friends, she learns that she is of value.  Through satisfaction. They feel a sense of accomplishment when they have completed a puzzle or artwork. (Puzzles, Art, Blocks)  Through curiosity. When they can explore items in the nature area it satisfies their curiosity. (Art, Nature)  Through repetition. Preschoolers learn everything by practicing it many times. Each time they can hope to do it better. A Bible truth needs to be shared many times in applicable situations so the child can understand it. (Books, Blocks, Art)  By doing. Preschoolers can learn much better by being involved in activities that stimulate their senses rather than sitting still and listening to a lesson being taught from a book. (Daily Life, Blocks, Books, Puzzles, Art, Nature)

7 Notes Bible Teaching Through Learning Centers

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 says for us to love the Lord with all our heart, and with all our soul and with all our strength. God says that we are to teach his commandments to our children as we sit, walk, lie down and get up. We are to impress these things on their little hearts while we are going about our daily activities. Even Jesus gathered the children and taught them whenever the opportunity arose. The Learning Centers give us many opportunities to teach preschoolers in fun ways and in a manner that can be applicable to their daily lives.

Teaching through Blocks

A preschooler‘s imagination can be stimulated through the use of blocks. The teacher can add a few props, people figures, or animals and he will begin building and role playing. A teacher may sit beside him and read to him ―God made the animals‖ Genesis 1:25, and if he needs guidance, encourage him to build an ark or zoo with the plastic animals.

Teaching through Books

A preschooler enjoys reading books about things with which he is . If Sammi has just been playing in the snow and then she looks at a book about snow, she will have all those ―snow‖ experiences in her mind to enrich her understanding of the book. The teacher may add, ―Sammi, God made the snow.‖ Preschoolers can be taught many things about life through books.

Teaching through Nature

Preschoolers have many occasions to learn about God as they have hands-on experience with the things God made. Teachers have endless opportunities to talk about God as preschoolers encounter things of the natural world.

Teaching through Puzzles

Working puzzles gives the child a sense of accomplishment. Puzzles encourage a child to reason, solve problems, to work alone or with others. The teacher may think of the Bible phrase ―We work together‖

8 Notes (I Cor. 3:9) as Derrick and Kole put a puzzle together. Applaud their efforts as they work hard to complete their task. A teacher may also pray, ―Thank you, God, for our hands to work the puzzles.‖

Teaching through Art

A child enjoys an activity that encompasses all of his senses. Through art he is able to experience seeing, feeling, touching, tasting, and smelling. Art activities give him opportunities to express his inner joys and frustrations alike. This is a wonderful time to share a Bible thought, song or story with preschoolers.

Teaching through Daily Life

Numerous activities await the preschooler in the daily life area. It is here that he learns to imitate the actions of others. He can work with others in preparing a ―pretend‖ meal or caring for a baby as he plays alone. When the teacher sees the child acting out the role of a doctor, she can encourage the child by saying the Bible thought, ―Jesus, also, made the sick people well.‖ (Luke 7:21)

9 OUR LOST WORLD DAY 1

Study Guide for Teachers

Genesis 1:1-19

In Genesis the Bible says that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Since God had not yet made the light, the Notes darkness was everywhere. This was the first day of creation. In the beginning there were no animals or plants or humans. The earth was a ball of water. The scripture says there was darkness over the face of the deep. God said, ―Let there be light, and there was light.‖ The sun and moon were not created until day four, therefore, the light was the glory from our Creator. ―God called the light ‗day‘, and the darkness He called ‗night.‘‖ The Hebrew word for ―day‖ is ―yom.‖ Here are a few reasons we can know this is a literal 24-hour period: 1) God gave each of His days an evening and a morning. 2)If ―yom‖ is preceded by a number such as first, second, third, etc., it always refers to a literal day. 3) Jeremiah 33:20-21 - God established a covenant that the day would be an appointed 24 hour period of time. This is such an important covenant that he stakes Christ‘s coming through the line of David on it.

On the second day, God created the firmament. One popular model for day 2 of creation is the ―Canopy Model‖ by Dr. Henry Morris. There was like a canopy or a bubble of water around the earth. And God said, ―Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water. So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse ‗sky.‘‖ (Gen. 1:6-8) The earth‘s environment would have been different under the canopy. Morris suggests that there may have been several differences in the antidiluvian atmosphere. The entire earth would have enjoyed a more constant tropical climate. The people and animals would have longer life spans. There would be higher barometric pressure on the earth which would have medicinal properties. This canopy of vapor would protect the earth from the sun‘s harmful rays.1

On the third day, God created the land. The earth did not look then as it does now. There was a large land mass and a single body of water. During the flood, the land began to separate, eventually forming several continents as we have now.

1Morris, Henry, The Biblical Basis for Modern Science, (Green Forest, AR: Master Books, 2004), p. 257-262 11 Notes God also created all kinds of vegetation. God gave us a world in which the plants inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen, knowing that later when he created man, the man would inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. What a plan! God also made it a point to show the plants were created mature with seed in the fruit.

On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon and stars. God made the earth just perfect for supporting life. If the sun were any closer to the earth we would burn up, or if it were any further away, we would freeze. The distance between the earth and the moon is perfect for the gravitational pull of the moon to cause gentle ocean tides. If it were closer, the tides would flood the land. If it were further away, the seas would stagnate.

God was preparing a wonderful, perfect place for us to live and to have sinless fellowship with Him. He loves us so much! I hope you enjoy teaching preschoolers about the wonderful world God made! Spend time in prayer for each one of the preschoolers that you will be teaching this week. Pray, also, for your fellow teachers or helpers.

Our Lost World DAY ONE & TWO CREATION CRAFT

For this craft you will combine two separate kits into one craft project. Materials Needed: Order the total number of kits needed for your students. Each child will  Crafts kits  Glue have one magnetic picture frame of the Garden. The idea is to take  Digital Camera elements of both frame kits and mix them so you get dinosaurs and  Tape other animals in every frame. There are different trees, animals, land and plants to choose from for each frame. So, every two students need a jungle frame kit and a dinosaur frame kit to combine into two garden frame kits. You will not use the sign from the jungle frame for this craft project. During the first day make sure you take pictures of the students. This will allow you time to have them developed at your local photo lab. Then on the second day they will be ready to mount in their frames. Make this as fun as possible with pictures in front of church decorations. Consider allowing your students to pose with friends in their group rather than self-portraits.

7

Our Lost World DAY FOUR RESURRECTION CRAFT

As your students learn and study Christ’s death, burial, and Materials Needed: resurrection it will change their lives. This small craft can also serve as  Crafts kits  Glue a reminder of that power in their life. We serve a risen Lord that created all we see and we give Him all glory and honor. Please order enough kits for each student to have one. These kits are simple to make and should not take more than one day. Follow the instructions with the kits.
