Arthur Blythe Quintet Thanks to woessner for sharing the Arthur Blythe Quintet (New York) and Ran Blake show at Dime. woessner noted in 2013: On June the 3, 2013, [jazz saxophonist] Arthur Blythe went into the USC Keck Center to have a large benign tumor removed from his right Kidney. The operation was serious, as Arthur spent one week after the procedure in an induced coma in their ICU unit. His health has been a challenge for him for several years now. The Parkinson’s (Arthur has been living with Parkinson’s for eight years) has developed more rapidly and at this time he is in a rehabilitation center in Lancaster, CA. His goal is to be back home (?) within the next 30 days. The recent operation he underwent diminished his ability to walk and swallow foods. He is fighting hard each day to gain his strength back. Chico Freeman Extended
Chico Freeman Heralded as one of the most important saxophonists of our time, composer and producer, Chico Freeman has perfected an immediately recognizable approach to music and composition, blending what he has experienced from his past and providing fluidity into a future of infinite musical possibilities. In the early 2000s, with dozens of recordings as a leader, Freeman moved from New York to Europe to start a new chapter of his life -- exploration by focusing on his own self-improvement and self-reflection. His thirst to immerse himself in his music, his curiosity to explore working with different musicians and living in different cultures and challenging himself to be better than he was. “As much as I’ve travelled and on the road playing with such masters as McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Sam Rivers, Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie and so many jazz greats, as well as leading my own groups including founding “The Leaders” and the group “Roots,” an inner voice was telling me, you need to go to another level both musically and personally,“ Freeman explains. “You need to work with other musicians from different cultures and create new avenues of expression. As part of the Freeman family legacy of Chicago; his father, legendary NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Von Freeman; his uncles, guitarist George Freeman; and drummer Bruz Freeman, Chico amassed a diverse résumé of performing R&B to blues, hard bop to avant-garde. His collegiate studies in Advanced Composition and Theory at Northwestern University led him to teach composition at the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) Music School, and while attaining his Masters in Composition and Theory at Governor State University, he studied composition with NEA Jazz Master Muhal Richard Abrams. -

LOUIS JOHNSON Approfondimenti a cura di Riccardo Pantella LOUIS JOHNSON “ THUNDER-THUMBS “ Quando si parla della tecnica dello Slap spesso vengono in mente i soliti nomi di grandi musicisti, ad esempio Larry Graham che si sostiene ne sia l’inventore. Ma è impossibile parlare di questa tecnica e non citare Louis Johnson, che di certo è stato uno dei pionieri ed ha contribuito a svilupparne la tecnica. Per via del suo stile distintivo venne soprannominato Thunder-Thumbs. Da non sottovalutare le sue numerose collaborazioni come session man. Tra le più importanti potremmo citare l’album “Thriller” di Michael Jackson. Probabilmente ciò che ha dato un grande contributo alla sua carriera è stata la sua ampia musicalità e senso ritmico. BIOGRAFIA Nato a Los Angeles il 13 Aprile del 1955, Louis fin da subito mostrò un forte interesse per la musica. Suo padre regalò presto una chitarra a lui e a suo fratello George, che subito cominciarono a suonare a turno. Louis era attratto dalle note gravi e cominciò a suonare le linee di basso che ascoltava sui dischi di artisti come James Brown, The Temptations and The Supremes.. Fu così che suo padre decise di regalargli un basso, e passò poco tempo prima che Johnson cominciò a strappare e percuotere le corde per dare più groove a ciò che suonava.
