Analyzing the Historiography of the Iberian Reconquista (718/722–1492/1614) from Feminist and Postcolonial Perspectives By Pablo Monerris Galvañ Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies, Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Gender Studies with Specialization in Women’s and Gender History Supervisor: Professor Francisca de Haan, Ph.D. Second Reader: Professor Marianne Thivend, Ph.D. CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2018 Abstract This thesis analyzes the (mainly Spanish and Anglo-American) historiography that discursively constructed Muslim presence and Muslim-Christian relationships in Medieval and Early Modern Iberia (711–1614) as a parenthesis amidst Catholic political domination, territorial unity, religious orthodoxy, and ethnic exclusivity. While traditional historiography has approached the history of Medieval and Early Modern Iberia through the concept of Reconquista, since the middle of the 20th century the conceptualization of Convivencia and new theorizations in the fields of History, Postcolonial and Feminist Studies have promoted new historiographical debates on and approaches to the history of Medieval and Early Modern Iberia. Using the theories of Orientalism, Intersectionality, gendered Islamophobia, Deconstruction and Performativity, this thesis analyzes the broad and complex historiographical field about Muslims in Medieval and Early Modern Iberian history, and explores whether this historiographical body produces narratives that can be interpreted as a biased discourse. My analysis shows that the use of the concept of Reconquista has played a powerful role in constructing a nationalist and exclusionary vision of Spanish history, in which Catholic and Muslim subjects were and continue to be constructed in oppositional and hostile ways. Secondly, it argues for the importance of recognizing the historical and historiographical roots of contemporary gendered Islamophobia. CEU eTD Collection i Resumen Esta tesis analiza la historiografía (principalmente en lengua española e inglesa) que construyó discursivamente la presencia musulmana y las relaciones entre personas musulmanas y cristianas en la Iberia medieval y bajo-moderna (711-1614) como un paréntesis en medio de la dominación política católica, la unidad territorial, la ortodoxia religiosa y la exclusividad étnica. Mientras que la historiografía tradicional ha abordado la historia de la Iberia medieval y bajo-moderna a través del concepto de Reconquista, desde mediados del siglo XX la conceptualización del término Convivencia y las nuevas teorizaciones en los campos de la Historia, los estudios poscoloniales y feministas han promovido nuevos debates historiográficos y nuevas aproximaciones a la historia de la Iberia medieval y moderna. Utilizando las teorías y métodos del Orientalismo, la interseccionalidad, la islamofobia de género, la “deconstrucción” y la “performatividad”, esta tesis analiza el amplio y complejo campo historiográfico sobre las personas musulmanas en la historia ibérica medieval y bajo-moderna, y explora si este cuerpo historiográfico produce narraciones que pueden interpretarse como un discurso sesgado. Mi análisis muestra que el uso del concepto de Reconquista ha desempeñado un papel importante en la construcción de una visión nacionalista y excluyente de la historia española, en la que los sujetos históricos musulmanes se construyeron de manera opuesta y hostil a los cristianos. En segundo lugar, defiende la importancia de reconocer las raíces históricas e historiográficas de la islamofobia de género contemporánea.     The Masters of Calatrava and the Castilian Civil War 1350-1369 BY JOSEPH F. O'CALLAGHAN Düring the third quarter of the fourteenth Century the bitter civil war between King Pedro the Cruel (1350-1369) and his half-brother, Count Enrique of Trastamara, tore the kingdom of Castile asunder, dividing its leaders and people, allowing no one the privilege of neutrality. Prominent among the participants in the conflict were the masters of the military Order of Calatrava who, together with the masters of Santiago and Alcäntara, ranked among the great men of the realm. As the war progressed, the king and his challenger endeavored to control magisterial elections and, through them, the immense resources that the Order of Calatrava possessed in the modern provinces of Ciudad Real, Jaen, Cordoba, Seville, and so forth. The consequence was schism within the Order, the diversion of its interest and wealth to domestic politics rather than the reconquest, and an increasing brutalization of life, typified by the execution of one master by Pedro and another by Enrique. Above all, the civil war pointed up the crown's growing awareness of the need to subject all the military Orders to effective royal control. ^ Juan Nünez de Prado At the time of Pedro the CruePs accession to the throne in March 1350 at the youthful age of sixteen years, Juan Nünez de Prado was the master of Calatrava. The illegitimate son of a knight named Carpintero and Bianca, senora of Las Huelgas and daughter of King Afonso III of Portugal (1248-1279), he was legitimated in 1313, on his mother's request, 2 by Pope Clement V, and entered the Order of Calatrava.

In a land diverse in geography and people, these human tribes would form new societies vying for resources to become the dominant power. And of all societies to flourish, the Mesoamerican civilizations including the Olmec and later the Aztec would rise as the most powerful empire in North America. South of Panama, the Inca would establish an empire in the Andes Mountains as the dominant power of South America. Yet the powerful Aztecs warriors and the high Incan forts would not withstand the guns nor devastating germs of European colonizers who would replace these native empires as the dominant power. Now it was the empires of Europe who were the true superpowers of the Western Hemisphere, establishing political, cultural, and economic control both continents. European colonialism would reshape the Western Hemisphere into a new world born from the ashes of Native People. Their former lands were fenced for European colonizers, of men and women who sought wealth that this new world provided. That wealth needed extraction, and so millions of enslaved people were chained and shipped from Africa towards the horrors of chattel slavery. The combination of these different people and cultures reshaped the Western Hemisphere, and the result of this clash of cultures is still evident today 527 years after Columbus arrived in Hispaniola.

Lo que con ostentación llamamos «imperio hispánico me- dieval» hace referencia al título de imperator que fue atribuido a unos cuantos reyes asturleoneses y luego castellanoleoneses de los siglos ix a xii, así como al aparato imperial con los que fue caracte- rizado su poder. Al principio el fenómeno fue más bien algo pun- tual. Posteriormente adquirió un desarrollo más efectivo, con los reinados de dos soberanos en particular: Alfonso VI (1065-1109), y su nieto Alfonso VII (1126-1157), que fueron ambos reyes de Cas- tilla y León y «emperadores de toda Hispania» (imperatores totius Hispaniae).
