  • DEAD CHANNEL SURFING: Cyberpunk and Industrial Music
DEAD CHANNEL SURFING: Cyberpunk and industrial music In the early 1980s from out of Vancouver, home of cyberpunk writer William Gibson and science fiction film-maker David Cronenberg, came a series of pioneering bands with a similar style and outlook. The popular synth-pop band Images in Vogue, after touring with Duran Duran and Roxy Music, split into several influential factions. Don Gordon went on to found Numb, Kevin Crompton to found Skinny Puppy, and Ric Arboit to form Nettwerk Records, which would later release Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads, Moev, Delerium and more. Controversial band Numb ended up receiving less attention than the seminal Skinny Puppy. Kevin Crompton (now called Cevin Key) joined forces with Kevin Ogilvie (Nivek Ogre) and began their career by playing in art galleries. After their friend Bill Leeb quit citing ‘creative freedom’ disputes, they embarked on a new style along with the help of newly recruited Dwayne Goettel. Leeb would go on to found Front Line Assembly with Rhys Fulber in 1986. The style of music created by these bands, as well as many similar others, has since been dubbed ‘cyberpunk’ by some journalists. Cyberpunk represents an interesting coupling of concepts. It can be dissected, as Istvan Csiscery-Ronay has shown, into its two distinct parts, ‘cyber’ and ‘punk’. Cyber refers to cybernet- ics, the study of information and control in man and machine, which was created by U.S. American mathematician Norbert Wiener fifty years ago. Wiener fabricated the word from the Greek kyber- netes, meaning ‘governor’, ‘steersman’ or ‘pilot’ (Leary, 1994: 66). The second concept, punk, in the sense commonly used since 1976, is a style of music incorporating do-it-yourself (d.i.y) techniques, centred on independence and touting anarchist attitudes.

Chris Connelly : INITIALS C.C. Out-takes, Rarities and Personal Favourites 1982-2002 vol.1 01. Detestimony – Fini Tribe: This was the “A” side of an EP called “Let the Tribe Grow,” written and recorded when the Fini Tribe was going through great musical changes. We had acquired an Ensoniq ‘Mirage’ sampling keyboard, and as was the same for a lot of bands at the time, it changed everything, opened up a lot of doors, and led us into some very uncharted waters. The actual piece was whittled down from a fifteen-minute opus we had written. I remember being in Philip Pinsky’s bedroom one night with John Vick. Philip’s then-roommate, Lindsay, gave us an old quarter-inch reel of tape he had. On it was a beautiful recording of the church bells you hear on the song; we sampled them and came up with the melody. The EP actually did better than any of us had anticipated and became a sort of hit in the Ibiza clubs at the very advent of the acid house/rave phenomenon. We actually went ahead and re-wrote/re- structured the song for the WaxTrax! Records release (“Make it Internal/Detestimony Revisited”) a couple of years later. 02. Mania – Murder Inc.: Certainly what I feel is the most compelling song on the one and only album released by Murder Inc. The band was basically Killing Joke, minus Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke’s singer), plus me, as well as the original drummer, Paul Fergusson, and newer drummer, Martin Atkins. The sessions took place at Pachyderm Studios in rural Minnesota during September of 1991.

Article Owen Coggins Distortion, restriction and instability Distortion, restriction and instability: Violence against the self in depressive suicidal black metal Owen Coggins The Open University Owen Coggins researches violence, ambiguity and mysticism in popular music, particularly in relation to extreme music and noise. His monograph, Mysticism, Ritual and Religion in Drone Metal was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2018, and, in addition to contributing several articles to Metal Music Studies his work has appeared in Popular Music, Implicit Religion, and Diskus: Journal of the British Association for the Study of Religion amongst others. He also runs Oaken Palace Records, a registered charity raising money for endangered species through releasing drone records. He is Honorary Associate of the Religious Studies Department at the Open University. Contact: Religious Studies Department, The Open University, Walton Hall, Milton Keynes MK7 6AA, UK. E-mail: [email protected] https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8322-1583 Abstract In the underground subgenre of depressive suicidal black metal (DSBM), extremes of violence against the self are presented in combination with a restrictive version of black metal. Album covers feature explicit photographs of self-cutting or drawings of suicide by hanging; vocals are tortured screams expressing extreme suffering, and guitar sounds are so distorted that they begin to approach an ambient atmospheric blur. Given the history of concern about metal and its health implications, I investigate DSBM as a case in which representation of harm in music is overt, explicit and extreme, yet the health impact of the music is undetermined. I discuss how different modalities of distortion and restriction may connect the sound of DSBM to themes of violence against the self, presenting a theoretical framework for approaching DSBM as music which negotiates a complex economy of the staging and control of violence with respect to the self.
