To those of you who only know about 1961 from your history books, Welcome! Here are some of the events that shaped 1961: John Kennedy was inaugurated 35th President, 17-year-old Bobby Fischer won the US chess championship for the fourth time, Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, and Alan Shepard made the first US space flight! Roger Maris hit 61 home runs, and the NY Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. Steve Wozniak celebrated his 11rh birthday. The Berlin Wall was built, and the Peace Corps was created by President Kennedy. Popular songs were "Love Makes The World Go Round", "Moon River", "Where The Boys Are", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone!", "Calcutta", and "Exodus." Popular movies were "West Side Story", Academy Award win- ner for Best Picture, "Judgment At Nuremberg", "Parent Trap", "The Hus- tler", and "The Absent Minded Professor". Top-rated TV shows were "Gunsmoke", ''The Andy Griffith Show", "The Untouchables", "Bonanza", "Wagon Train" and "Hazel". Also on the air: "Dr. Kildare", "Mr. Ed" and "Wide World Of Sports". Joseph Heller's World War II satire "Catch 22" was published; the title quickly became part of the American lexicon. Harper Lee won a Pulitzer Prize for "To Kill a Mockingbird", Bob Dylan made his first concert appearance in Greenwich Village, Gary Cooper dies and Clark Gable's last film, "The Mis- fits", was released. On Broadway, the Tony-Award winning musical was "Bye, Bye Birdie" and the winning play was "Becket". Richard Burton won Best Actor in a Musical for "Camelot". IBM introduced the IBM Selectric Typewriter and the FDA approved acetarniniphen. Inventions included the electric toothbrush and Valium! Americans were trying to lose weight with Metrecal, the liquid diet in a can. The population in San Jose was 204,196 (today: 873,300). The popula- tion in the United States was 178,464,236 (today: 269,228,542). Then, 38% of all women worked outside the home compared to 60% today. 1961 was also the year that "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" opened on Broadway. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama and Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Musical in 1962. 2 A Note from the Director How to Succeed ... is based on Shepherd Mead's 1954 send-up of the business world at that time. Frank Loesser andAbe Bur- rows developed Mead's ideas into a delightful, satirical theater piece complete with musical numbers that exaggerate office life. This show is not to be taken seriously. It is a farce. It is a commentary on what life in the business world was like in 1961. It's fun to see how much we've changed -and how much we really haven't! The look and feel of this production of How to Succeed ... has been carefully chosen to convey the period as well as the tone of the show. We've also tried to use as many actual clothes from the period as possible; this, combined with our concept, has led to our color choices for scenes. So you can appreciate our subtleties, here's what you'll see: before Finch joins World Wide Wicket, it is just a black-and-white-world, not a whole lot of color, not much life! Soon we see ourWWW employees move to that non-committal color: beige, which reflects so well their various"Coffee"moods. Our ladies begin the second act "green with envy", and all, in our happy-ever-after ending, through Finch's influence at www, are in living color! In the recent Broadway revival, Walter Cronkite was the Book Voice. Since we're doing this show in Silicon Valley, where so many have succeeded in business, I definitely wanted some- one for our Book Voice who was clearly identified with the business and success of tills valley. I am thrilled that our Book Voice is none other than Steve Wozniak! So, now, sit back and enjoy the view and the journey back to a time when a computer was the size of a large room!
