Pritrkavanje F o l k l o r i s t i k a 5 Knjiga je znanstveno čvrsto utemeljena študija pri- trkavanja, pomembnega fenomena slovenske tra- dicijske kulture, in kot taka doprinos k njegovemu ohranjanju in objektivni umestitvi v družbeno in kulturno krajino Slovenije in širše evropske regije. zaznamovan z zvokom cerkvenih zvonov, saj zvonovi s svojo glasnostjo navadno preglasijo druge zvoke oko- lja. Skoraj ni zvonika, ki ne bi imel vsaj enega zvona, s katerim bi naznanjal čas molitve, prihajajoči praznik, pomembnejše dogodke v življenju ljudi in podobno. Vendar pa se zvonovi ne oglašajo vedno enako, česar morda naključni človek zavedno niti ne zazna. Vsaka zvočna signalizacija z načinom rabe zvonov drugače pošilja sporočila v zvočni prostor in najlepša ter v glasbenem smislu najbolj dovršena je v slovenskem prostoru prav gotovo glasbena govorica pritrkavanja. Pritrkavanje - glasbena igra ritmičnih obrazcev s kemblji ali kladivi ob udarni obroč zvona - je v slovenskem prostoru zelo razširjena glasbena dejavnost, ki črpa glasbeno gradivo tako iz pretekle tradicije kot iz sedanje ustvarjalnosti pritrkovalcev. V pričujoči knjigi je pritrkavanje predstavljeno tako iz glasbenovsebinske kot iz kontekstualne ravni. Obravnava pritrkavanja kot glas- 7 benega produkta in glasbenega procesa je združena z interpretacijo dejavnosti z vidika njenih nosilcev - pritrkovalcev, prav tako pa je pritrkavanje umeščeno v druge druž- bene in glasbene procese, ki se danes odvijajo na področju slovenske ljudske glasbe. V knjigi se oddaljujem od starih konceptov folkloristike, ki so si pri obrav- navi folklornega gradiva prizadevali za predstavljanje totalnega in reprezentančnega (Klobčar 2011: 8): iščem namreč tudi izjemno in enkratno tako z vidika glasbe in nje- nih izvajalcev kot s stališča konteksta, v katerem delujejo. Po eni strani je to vidno pri obravnavi gradiva, ki vključuje avtorska dela pritrkovalcev in enkratne izvedbe, pri katerih se ne sprašujem o njihovi starosti, načinu prenosa ali variantnosti. Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below).

    Joanne Droppers Collection Biography Joanne was born in Ithaca, NY, on March, 29, 1932, the youngest child of Walter C. and Minnie W. Muenscher. She graduated from Cornell University in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in music. It was at Cornell that she met and dated Garrett Droppers, who sang in the choir she directed. They were married in August 1953. She originally came to Alfred in 1961, when Garrett was appointed a professor of history at Alfred University. The couple had lived in Madison, WI, and Orono, ME, before settling in Alfred. In addition to being a housewife and mother to their three children, Joanne was employed periodically as an administrative assistant. Joanne loved playing piano and singing with her family. She was organist for several Episcopal congregations, a hand bell ringer, and played violin in local community orchestras. In 1976, she became a member of the American Guild of Carillonneurs and in 1977 she was appointed carillonneur for Alfred University, a position she held for 17 years. As Alfred University carillonneur, Joanne toured the United States and Canada, performing on many North American carillons. She also composed and arranged a number of songs for carillon, including Bach’s Suite #11 for Lute and Tubular Bells. One of her favorite tunes was the Oscar Meyer Weiner jingle, which she arranged for carillon and played at Alfred’s annual Hot Dog Day celebration. Garrett Droppers predeceased Joanne in 1986, and after her retirement in 1994, she moved to Arlington, VA, to be near her grandsons. While in Virginia, she continued her musical pursuits by playing carillons in the area.

Leuven: Leuven University Press, 2014, 368 pp. HE CARILLON IS HIDDEN IN plain sight: the instrument and its players cannot be found performing in concert halls, yet while carillonneurs and Tkeyboards are invisible, their towers provide a musical soundscape and focal point for over six hundred cities, neighborhoods, campuses, and parks in Europe, North America, and beyond. The carillon, a keyboard instrument of at least two octaves of precisely tuned bronze bells, played from a mechanical- action keyboard and pedalboard, and usually concealed in a tower, has not received a comprehensive historical treatment since André Lehr’s The Art of the Carillon in the Low Countries (1991). A Dutch bellfounder and campanologist, Lehr contributed a positivist history that was far-ranging and thorough. In 1998, Alain Corbin’s important study Village Bells: Sound and Meaning in the Nineteenth-Century French Countryside (translated from the 1994 French original) approached the broader field of campanology as a history of the senses.1 Belgian carillonneur and musicologist Luc Rombouts has now compiled his extensive knowledge of carillon history in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United States, as well as of less visible carillon cultures from Curaçao to Japan, into Singing Bronze: A History of Carillon Music, the most valuable scholarly account of the instrument to date. Rombouts’s original Dutch book, Zingend Brons (Leuven: Davidsfonds, 2010), is the more comprehensive version of the two, directed at a general readership in the Low Countries familiar with carillon music, and at carillonneurs and music scholars.

    Work No. 1197: All the bells in a country rung as quickly and as loudly as possible for three minutes 26th June 2012: Press Release An Invitation for Bell Ringers to Lead Thousands of People in the UK’s Biggest Olympic Celebration On 27th July 2012, Work No. 1197: All the bells in a country rung as quickly and as loudly as possible for three minutes by Turner Prize-winning artist and musician Martin Creed, will be performed by thousands of people across the UK for the London 2012 Festival to celebrate the first day of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Anyone can take part by simply registering to ring a bell at www.allthebells.com. The time for the event has been confirmed as 08:12 and the event will be broadcast by the BBC to a potential live audience of over 10 million people across the UK on TV, radio and online - including BBC Breakfast, BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show and BBC local radio stations. Martin Creed appreciates that it will be difficult for change-ringers to ring their bells for just three minutes and has said that he is happy for bells to be rung for longer and that ringers can ring their bells in their usual style or in a peal from their tower team’s choosing. The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (CCCBR) is keen to encourage as much Olympic ringing as possible, on 27 July and on other major dates, and supports those who wish to do so, both those who will take part in All The Bells, and those ringing in more conventional ways on other occasions.
