ISBN 978-951-39-4982-2 (PDF) Finnish summary The present study examined racial discourse in the dialogues of conflict be- tween black and white characters in the text of James Baldwin’s play Blues for Mister Charlie (1964). Racial discourse was understood as a system of evaluative meanings that pertains to the hegemonic struggle between dominant and re- sistant ideologies. The study positioned itself to the field of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). It’s main concerns were language, power and society. It uti- lized Norman Fairclough’s (1992) idea of the hegemonic power struggle of ideo- logies within discourse and aimed at connecting this struggle both to racial and dramatic conflict. For this purpose, the author of this thesis constructed four different Readers implied by the text, the ideological standpoints of which the identities negotiated by the play’s characters were to depend on. The author also analyzed the play through four dramatic theories, concerning the ideologi- cal consequences of the kinds of catharses offered by them. All Four Readers stemmed from the racial situation of the USA in the early 1960s. During those times, the country’s white population was divided into racial conservatives and liberals, while the ideology of non-violent Christianity promoted by Martin Lu- ther King was challenged by the emerging Black Power Movement. This movement recognized the black frustration and anger and demanded whites to relinquish their socio-economic power and privileges, which caused many white liberals to retreat from the civil rights struggle. Baldwin’s text brings these ideo- logical conflicts on the level of interpersonal disputes. Crucial to the racial dis- course of the play was the creation of spaces in which its characters, bound by the context of the racial power structure, existed and made ideological choices, and the way these spaces depended on each other. Besides these two kinds of spaces, I found attempts to create spaces of innocence between the black and white char- acters in the play. The depiction of racism as a prison-like total institution also resembled the Southern system of apartheid segregation, which was only tem- porarily challenged by the black protagonist, whose killing remained unpun- ished due to a false testimony that utilized racial prejudice and the Southern myth of the black man as a rapist. My year of study abroad was facilitated by both a benefit from KELA and a grant presented to me by the Faculty of Humanities and the Department of English in the University of Jyväskylä, with the late Kari Sajavaara as the Head of the Department, for which I am grateful. My year in Oxford gave me a good starting point for this research. After returning from my yearlong leave of ab- sence in the UK to my employment in Iisalmi, I attended a course by the University of Kuopio on qualitative research methods, some of which I also applied in this research. The beginning of the 21st century became one turning-point for my research, as I was, then, able to concentrate on it more than before, with financial assistance from the Department during 2003 and 2004. This progressive pace, alas, slowed down, due to a serious illness I struggled with the years from 2005 to 2008. Since the year 2009, I have been able to focus on this research in a more goal-oriented manner. Holloway A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 1975 618208 ii Abstract Well known as a brilliant essayist and gifted novelist, James Baldwin has received little critical attention as short story writer. This dissertation analyzes his short fiction, concentrating on character, theme and technique, with some attention to biographical parallels. The first three chapters establish a background for the analysis and criticism sections. Chapter 1 provides a biographi­ cal sketch and places each story in relation to Baldwin's novels, plays and essays. Chapter 2 summarizes the author's theory of fiction and presents his image of the creative writer. Chapter 3 surveys critical opinions to determine Baldwin's reputation as an artist. The survey concludes that the author is a superior essayist, but is uneven as a creator of imaginative literature. Critics, in general, have not judged Baldwin's fiction by his own aesthetic criteria. The next three chapters provide a close thematic analysis of Baldwin's short stories. Chapter 4 discusses "The Rockpile," "The Outing," "Roy's Wound," and "The Death of the Prophet," a Bi 1 dungsroman about the tension and ambivalence between a black minister-father and his sons. In contrast, Chapter 5 treats the theme of affection between white fathers and sons and their ambivalence toward social outcasts—the white homosexual and black demonstrator—in "The Man Child" and "Going to Meet the Man." Chapter 6 explores the theme of escape from the black community and the conseauences of estrangement and identity crises in "Previous Condition," "Sonny's Blues," "Come Out the Wilderness" and "This Morning, This Evening, So Soon." The last chapter attempts to apply Baldwin's aesthetic principles to his short fiction.

As the attention to gospel music in texts about black women demonstrates, the material conditions of poverty and oppression did not exclude the existence of their spiritual value—of their claim to humanity that was not based on conduct or social decorum. At root, this project seeks to further the scholarship in sound and black feminist studies— applying concepts, such as saturation, break, and technology to the interpretation of black womanhood in the vernacular and cultural recordings of gospel in literature. Abstract This article seeks to explore the way James Baldwin uses Platonic love and Brechtian techniques in his two plays, The Amen Corner (1968a) first performed in 1955, and Blues for Mister Charlie (1964a), to express his personal and racial concerns. It aims at demonstrating that Baldwin’s plays belong to the Western epic theatre at the level of form and are platonic at the level of content in their conception of love. The Amen Corner recalls in many aspects Plato’s dialogue Symposium (2008) in which the participants provide their definition of love by trying to displace, provoke, and collectively search for truth in a process of a dialogic interaction. His play Blues for Mister Charlie is not only a black church ritual, but it is written according to the Western epic theatrical tradition as designed by Bertolt Brecht. Introduction After the Second World War, experimental European drama as designed by great playwrights like Bertolt Brecht influenced the American and the African American theatre. However, some critics like Carlton W. He tells the story of his relationship with his younger brother, Sonny. That relationship has moved through phases of separation and return. After their parents’ deaths, he tried and failed to be a father to Sonny. For a while, he believed that Sonny had succumbed to the destructive influences of Harlem life. Finally, however, they achieved a reconciliation in which the narrator came to understand the value and the importance of Sonny’s need to be a jazz pianist. The story opens with a crisis in their relationship. The narrator reads in the newspaper that Sonny was taken into custody in a drug raid. He learns that Sonny is addicted to heroin and that he will be sent to a treatment facility to be “cured.” Unable to believe that his gentle and quiet brother could have so abused himself, the narrator cannot reopen communication with Sonny until a second crisis occurs, the death of his daughter from polio.

MIn a forty-year career, spanning 1947 to 1987, he relentlessly cri- tiqued U.S. capitalism and the alienation created by its sustaining ideologies, especially racism and (hetero)sexism. Working during the same decades in which American studies built its foundation, Baldwin shared the concerns of the field’s early practitioners, but he also anticipated the directions that succeeding generations would deem necessary. He examined the meaning of “Americanness,” but immediately found it to be inflected by race, class, gender, and sexuality.1 Baldwin argued that Americans’ self-conceptions relied on mythology that ignored the violence and injustice of the nation’s past and present. Namely, fair play seemed to be a guiding principle only because many were seduced by national fantasies. The American artist and critic therefore needed to expose those myths and urge citizens to relinquish them. Only by facing reality, Baldwin maintained, could Americans grapple with the injustice of social hierarchies and thereby recognize their connection to one another.

It argues that the hitherto prioritization of a national paradigm in discussions of black British theatre is not sufficiently complex to chart the historical processes that have shaped it and the multiple spatial, cultural, and political contexts in which it has been generated. This thesis finds that a transnational optic exposes a network of connections – physical, ideological and psychic – between blacks in Britain and other global black communities which have shaped and transformed the lives of Britain‟s black communities and their cultural production. The thesis is divided into three chapters: the USA (chapter 1), the Caribbean (chapter 2), and Africa (chapter 3). Each chapter represents a specific geo- cultural-political space with which black British theatre has an important relationship. Baldwin goes to much length to utilize the music of the American Negro in establishing this world of chaos and confusion. It is the wailing and writhing of the blues or the brassy notes of jazz that often establish the key themes in his fiction. The messages in the blues songs of Bessie Smith and Ida Scott immediately set the despairing tone that plunges a reader into the very depth of alienation: "Do you love me?" "Who am I?" Twentieth century literature seems to be earmarked as a quest for reality, and the fiction of James Baldwin appears to be no exception.

    Blues for Mister Charlie: Light from Terrible Darkness Blues for Mister Charlie is an angry play from an angry time. The “Mister Charlie” of the title is a euphemism for “cracker,” a pejorative racial epithet for white people that has etymological roots in the slave driver of the antebellum South who literally cracked a whip. Trinity Rep deserves enormous credit for putting on this rarely performed play, but fully appreciating it requires a substantial discussion of historical background well beyond that ordinarily encountered in a theater review. The playwright, James Baldwin, was not just a writer, but was a public intellectual directly and extensively engaged in the politics of the civil rights movement at a critical juncture, and his continuing influence remains profound long after his death in 1987. A protégé of Richard Wright and a mentor to Toni Morrison, Baldwin earned a place in the generational pantheon of African-American writers. The play is based “very distantly indeed” on Emmet Till, a black 14 year-old from urban Chicago, who was murdered in 1955 while visiting his uncle, a preacher, in rural Mississippi. He was accused of “insulting” a 21-year-old white woman working as a storekeeper. Shortly after this incident, the woman’s husband and his half-brother, possibly accompanied by a third man who may have been a black accomplice, went to Till’s relatives’ home, abducted him, and drove him to various locations where they tortured him, shot him dead and then dumped the body in the river. Accepted 1 October, 2013 ABSTRACT The relationship between black Africa and Euro-America has been defined and dictated by distinctions in race differentials. From the initial contact between these two distinctly dichotomous races, there ensued what could best be ascribed as ‘never-ending war’ of the world’s two large races with the white race claiming superiority over the black people of Africa and blacks in the Diaspora. This article investigates the interloping issues of racism, identity and fundamental human rights of the African-American within the context of the doctrine of the Black Revolutionary Theatre, using James Baldwin’s Blues for Mister Charlie as a working paradigm. The paper concludes that despite the gains that have been attained in improved race relationship between blacks and whites in the United States, a lot still need to be done. Since racism and racial prejudice cannot be completely eradicated, the imperative is for compromise and accommodation, as well as mutual respect between blacks and whites regardless of distinctions of colour. If there is some figurative truth in his declarations "Nobody Knows My Name" and "No Name in the Street," on a realistic level practically everyone knows his name, from people on the street to scholars in the most prestigious universities-and they all respond to him. Those responses are as diverse and as antithetical as the respon­ dents. Indeed, there is little unanimity in the criticism of James Bald­ win: some view him as a prophet preaching love and salvation, others as a soothsayer forecasting death and destruction; some see him as a civil-rights advocate writing protest literature, others as an artist imagi­ natively portraying the plight of the black American or the alienated man.
