History of NBVM 1 The History of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church 1909-1910 Compiled by Estrella Brown June 2010 In 1909, priests and their “Chapel Cars” who made their rounds through smaller towns held services in parishioners’ homes. During 1909, Reverend Fr. Servais from St. Patrick’s Parish in Portland held many of the services in the International Order of Odd Fellows Hall in the Dietz building at the corner of East Second and A Streets. According to the Catholic Sentinel, Jan 14, 1909, Rev. Father Servais celebrated mass on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at both Rainier and Goble. From Feb. 24-28, 1909, Fr. O’Brien, O.P. of Portland gave a series of lectures at the I.O.O.F. Hall. The women of the parish were also very active during this year and formed the Catholic Ladies Aid Society. Besides this group, they also formed the Catholic Sewing Society and gave a Christmas bazaar in Dec. 1909. According to The Rainier Review in the Dec. 16, 1909 issue it was “one of the most successful bazaars ever held in this city…Under the efficient management of Mrs. Chas. Clark the bazaar was successfully carried out. Too much cannot be said of the valuable aid rendered by Mrs. Lee, Mrs. B. Clark, and Mrs. Sheerin, while Mesdames Chambers, O’Leary, Werthes and Vogal and the Misses O’Leary, Nema Brough and May Gallagher all assisted materially to make the bazaar a success. Contributions also came from Mesdames Simmons, David, Burns, Lowe, Flynn and Downing.” In August of 1909, Rev.

Mon Mar 16, 2020 - 7:51 pm EST SHUTTERSTOCK.COM By Paul Smeaton March 16, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Bishop Earl Boyea of the Catholic Diocese of Lansing, Michigan, is continuing Sunday Masses, has urged parishes to keep churches open, to bring Holy Communion to those self-isolating, and is encouraging Eucharistic Adoration and devotion to St. Joseph in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “In order not to stifle people’s understandable desire for greater closeness with Christ at this time of heightened public worry, I would urge parishes to keep churches open for as long as possible each day so that both clergy and lay faithful can spend time with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament,” a statement from Boyea issued last Friday read. “Similarly, I would urge parishes to be generous with the provision of Eucharistic Adoration.” https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/us-bishop-continues-public-sunday-masses-keeps-churches-open-during-coronavirus-outbreak 1/3 17/3/2020 US bishop continues public Sunday Masses, keeps churches open during coronavirus outbreak | News | LifeSite Boyea has dispensed the obligation of attending Mass each Sunday, but Sunday Masses have not been canceled, despite an Executive Order from Michigan’s governor that public gatherings be limited to a maximum of 250 people. Portier This dissertation examines the theological work of John Hugo by looking at its roots within the history of Ignatian spirituality, as well as within various nature-grace debates in Christian history. It also attempts to situate Hugo within the historical context of early twentieth-century Catholicism and America, particularly the period surrounding the Second World War. John Hugo (1911-1985) was a priest from Pittsburgh who is perhaps best known as Dorothy Day‟s spiritual director and leader of “the retreat” she memorialized in The Long Loneliness. Throughout much of American Catholic scholarship, Hugo‟s theology has been depicted as rigorist and even labeled as Jansenist, yet it was embraced by and had a great influence upon Day and many others.

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Jacques Maritain and Alasdair MacIntyre on Human Rights A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Philosophy Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy © Copyright All Rights Reserved By Carrie Rose Stibora Washington, D.C. 2013 Jacques Maritain and Alasdair MacIntyre on Human Rights Carrie Rose Stibora, Ph.D. Director: V. Bradley Lewis, Ph.D. This dissertation is an examination of the two divergent positions on human rights taken by prominent Catholic and Thomist philosophers Jacques Maritain and Alasdair MacIntyre. Maritain and MacIntyre, although having traveled similar paths, which included atheism, Marxism, anti-liberalism, seemingly have diametrically opposed position on the use of human rights. Maritain's work, including engagement with the drafting of the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights (1948), redefined human rights as an extension of the natural law tradition rooted in the work of Thomas Aquinas. Maritain's unique definition of rights included such notions as personalism, the common good, justice and had a basis in classical metaphysics. MacIntyre, on the other hand, rejects human rights because of their liberal provenance, maintaining that rights language is a necessary band-aid to motivate individuals to help those less fortunate in society where community, the common good and family have been significantly weakened because of liberalism. Starting with John XXIII and the Second Vatican Council up through Benedict XVI, Maritain's articulation of rights influenced several popes. It has become the stock language of the Catholic Church, despite centuries of pontiffs rebuking liberalism and rights language.
