Slovenian-American Poets Featured in

"Poetry and Polka" Festival

Slovenia and Cleveland, Ohio, are both known for their unique styles of polka music and strong literary traditions, especially in poetry. For the first time, the two creative expressions were brought together recently in a special event, "Poetry and Polka," at SNPJ Farm in Kirtland. Seven of Cleveland's best-known poets presented recent poems on themes of ethnic heritage, music, food, nostalgia and local life. A polka dance with the Al Battistelli Orchestra followed the program, along with Slovenian-style dining and balina-playing.

Each poet who participated is recognized as among the area's leading literary voices. Katie Daley recites the spoken word in the folk trio "The Undercurrents." Gail Bellamy, whose show has been heard on WELW, is the Poet Laureate of Cleveland Heights. Rita Grabowski manages Cleveland State University's Poetry Center. John Panza is president of Heights Arts in Cleveland Heights. Cindy Washabaugh is active in CSU's creative writing program. Lee Chilcote is a community activist. Ray McNiece is known internationally as an award-winning performance poet. Panza, Washabaugh and McNiece are of Slovenian heritage.

"We did poetry and jazz, why not poetry and polkas?" McNiece said. "I grew up with polkas. My dad was Irish and my mom was Slovenian. We watched ‘Polka Varieties' on Sunday." McNiece often addresses Slovenian themes in his poetry. In March, McNiece performed with Slovenian entertainer Vlado Kreslin In Cleveland.

"'Poetry and Polka' is a celebration of the people, places and traditions that make this corner of America great," added Gail Bellamy. "The Cleveland area is home to a hundred nationalities and this diversity is reflected in the city's rich cultural mix, particularly in literature and music."

"Poetry and Polka" was organized by Joe Valencic, who is president of the Cleveland Federation of SNPJ Lodges at whose facility the event took place for SNPJ Lodge 5. He became friends with many of the poets through The Lit, Cleveland's literary center.

"I was inspired by Slovenia's Medana festival of wine and poetry," said Valencic. "Cleveland is known for its popular style of polka music, rooted in folk songs brought by Slovenian immigrants. Our industrial city also has a century-old heritage of working-class poets. It seemed natural to join the two art forms into a new and different event. The success of the event ensured more "Poetry and Polka" pairings in the future."

The cabins reserved have bunkrooms with four beds each (and a few have 2 or 3 beds each). Bunks are first come, first serve. Check the Mohican Center website to view a slide show: www.outdoors.org/lodging/lodges/mohican/index.cfm I think that I am a pretty lucky person. I have a great family and am blessed with many wonderful friends. I have a job that I just love and find great satisfaction in doing. And to top it off, I’m Slovenian. How much better can it get than that!

I am speech therapist and I work for Dupage Easter Seals in the west suburbs of Chicago. I work with a variety of children with special needs and I can’t think of a more fulfilling job in the world. Everyday I get to go to work and do something that makes a difference in the life of a child. Those of you who also work with children know how wonderful this can be. I also work with an awesome bunch of people and am so proud to be associated with Easter Seals.

I am also President of St. Anne’s Lodge #170 KSKJ. I have been involved with my lodge in one way or another since I was born. I treasure the fact that through KSKJ I can celebrate my heritage and help preserve Slovenian traditions for future generations. Several years ago KSKJ started its Matching Funds program in which the home office will match up to $1000.00 of the profit for fundraising projects that lodges sponsor.

I am fortunate enough that this year I can combine two of the most important things in my life into one event. This year on Sunday, September 12, 2010, St. Anne’s #170 KSKJ, my lodge, will be holding a fundraiser for Dupage Easter Seals and the Fox Valley Region at the Slovenian Cultural Center, in Lemont, IL All proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund to help pay for therapy services for those children who have no insurance coverage. Unfortunately our current economic environment is also impacting children with special needs. So for those of you out there who can, please join us on this day.

Tax deductible donations to DuPage Easter Seals can be sent to: Barbara Krampac, 127 Glengarry Drive, #208, Bloomingdale, IL 60108. www.kskjlife.org Baraga miracle sent to Rome

By John Fee and Loreene Zeno Koskey / August 16, 2010

Bishop Frederic Baraga, known as the “Snowshoe Priest,” is one step closer to being called “Venerable,” part of the track toward being declared a saint. A four-month investigation into an alleged miracle has been completed and the findings have been sent to Rome. The tribunal responsible for the investigation signed and sealed documents at a ceremony held at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette on July 17, 2010.

Postulator for the cause, Dr. Andrea Ambrosi, will present the tribunal’s findings to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The congregation will once again review the position paper, which details Bishop Baraga’s life and virtues, as well as documents written by and about him. Then they will make a recommendation to Pope Benedict XVI regarding Bishop Baraga’s heroic virtue. The Holy Father will subsequently decide whether the title of “Venerable” can be bestowed on Bishop Baraga. This step in the process could take a year or more.

“This is one of the most remarkable, important, exciting and significant moments in the life, history of the Diocese of Marquette,” said Bishop at the tribunal’s closing ceremony. The tribunal investigated a case involving a supposed tumor on a patient’s liver that had shown up on various diagnostic tests. The patient, the patient’s family and their parish priest prayed for healing by invoking the intercession of Bishop Baraga. In addition, Bishop Baraga’s stole was placed on the patient’s abdomen, after which the patient reported that the pain being experienced went away. Doctors then performed exploratory surgery, but found no trace of the tumor.

In looking into the purported miracle, the tribunal was charged with collecting medical documentation and interviewing various witnesses, including doctors and medical personnel involved in the treatment of the patient. It is now the task of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican to examine the tribunal’s work and determine whether the event was one that could not be explained by science and whether it could be attributed to the intercession of Bishop Baraga. The tribunal is not allowed to disclose any details of its investigation at this time.

The official inquiry to investigate the alleged miracle began on March 12. Bishop Sample appointed Father Browne, moderator of the curia for the Diocese of Marquette, to lead the work of the tribunal. Other members of the team included Father Ben Paris as promoter of justice, Elizabeth Delene as notary, Judy Jason as copier (transcriptionist) and Dr. John G. Kublin, M.D. as the medical expert. Father Michael Steber, pastor of St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, served as chancellor.

“We finished an important document, called a ‘positio,’ in 1998. This is basically documentation of Bishop Baraga – his life, his virtues. This is why we believe Frederic Baraga to be a saint because of his life, his zeal, his missionary spirit,” Bishop Sample said. “This document is already in Rome and has been examined by the historical consultors and received their approval.”

Once a miracle attributable to Baraga has been verified and the proper documentation submitted to the pontiff, Pope Benedict will decide whether Bishop Baraga is to be beatified, which would give him the title of “Blessed.” This would allow him to be publicly venerated in a limited sense. “We hope they affirm this miracle. It would be a very exciting moment, something we’ve been praying for so long,” Bishop Sample said. Even if the title of “Blessed” is bestowed, more steps will be required for Bishop Baraga to be canonized, that is, declared a saint. The diocese would need to verify another miracle attributable to his intercession that occurred after his beatification. Pending a positive result, Bishop Baraga would be known as Saint Frederic Baraga and be subject to public veneration throughout the worldwide Church.

The cause for Bishop Baraga’s sainthood was opened in 1952. Bishop Baraga currently carries the title, “Servant of God,” since the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has formally admitted his cause for consideration.

Bishop Baraga was born in Slovenia in 1797. He came to the United States to be a missionary to the Odawa and Ojibwa of the upper Great Lakes region in 1830. Bishop Baraga traveled throughout the 80,000 square-mile territory by canoe, boat, horse, snowshoes and even dog sled. He was consecrated a bishop and appointed vicar apostolic of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1853.

When the vicariate apostolic was established as the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie (now called the Diocese of Marquette) in 1857, Baraga served as its first bishop until his death in 1868. His work includes an Ojibwa English dictionary, which is still in use today. The Bishop Baraga Association was established in 1930 to promote the cause for sainthood of Bishop Baraga.
