About the Filmmaker: When I was growing up in the 1970’s as the youngest son of a widowed mother, the many hours of work my mother put in to supporting the family About the Filmmaker: frequently left me alone in our rural home far from civilization. Glued to the television watching old movies I became a particular fan of what could be called “last man on earth” films: the adaptations of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend such as Ubaldo Ragona’s The Last Man on Earth and Boris Sagal’s The Omega Man, along with films like Ray Milland’s Panic in the Year Zero. Many times I fantasized about what would happen if no one ever came home. What would life be like if the isolation I felt, alone inside my own head, became a permanent external state? It was the remem- brance of those daydreams that inspired me to write The Island.

When I first began thinking about making my second film, many thoughts swirled through my head. I viewed my first film, Beyond Wallthe of Sleep, as a success, but as a first time director I didn’t fully comprehend what an ambitious project I had taken on. The film had a cast of nearly 20, six loca- tions, and a “featurette” length of 35 minutes. In hindsight I realized I had done some things well, but that there were also many things I hadn’t given the proper attention, in particular the quality of the actors’ performances. So as I began to envision my second film, I made two initial decisions: that it would be a small cast of two or three, and that it would be filmed in a single location. The hope was that this would allow me to be more focused and precise in my decisions. Little did I know that these choices would present their own group of challenges. Painter of Skies (Spain) - Indie Film I have to thank my excellent cast and crew.
