Fauna SECTION 8 8 Fauna 8.1 Existing Conditions 8.1.1 Species present As part of the PER study, URS commissioned fauna surveys of the Princess Louise and North Point mine areas and associated access roads. The work was undertaken by biological consultants (Indicus), and arrived at the following key findings: Princess Louise Four species of mammal, 17 birds, eight reptiles and three amphibian species were recorded during the surveys (Indicus 2007). Cane toads were the only feral animals recorded at this site. A full species listing is provided in Table 8.1. Due to previous land clearing for exploration purposes, the fauna surveys were undertaken along the edges of the tenement in sections of remnant vegetation, as indicated by the transect lines in Figure 8.1. While it is noted that the conceptual mine layouts affect areas to the north of these transects, the habitat types and vegetation communities north and south of the mine are comparable. Princess Louise access road Eleven species of birds were recorded during surveys (Indicus 2007). North Point Six species of mammal, 31 birds, six reptiles and two amphibian species were found during surveys (Indicus 2007). Feral donkeys were recorded at this site. A northern quoll was recorded at North Point mine site (see Figure 8.2). Similar to Princess Louise, previous land clearing for exploration purposes meant that the surveys were conducted on the periphery of the tenement where native vegetation still exists. In this case, the transects correspond closely with areas of proposed land disturbance. Ellie Dyer, 4th November 2015 2 Abstract Alien species are a major component of human-induced environmental change, yet spatial and temporal variation in the drivers of their introduction, and their subsequent distribution and richness, are poorly understood. Here, I present a global analysis of the drivers of this variation for a major animal group, birds (Class Aves), using the newly-created Global Avian Invasions Atlas (GAVIA) database. GAVIA includes information on introduction successes and failures, enabling me to examine the effect of colonisation pressure (the number of species introduced) on alien bird distributions. A description of the GAVIA database is given in Chapter 2, with details on its scope and sources, data collation and validation, and the production of alien range maps. Chapter 3 focuses on the early stages of the invasion pathway, and shows that historical introductions tend to originate in Europe, were driven by the global movements of British colonialism, and involved species deemed useful. Modern introductions, in contrast, tend to originate in Southeast Asia and Africa, are driven by factors associated with wealth, and involve species found in the pet trade. -

It is a unique example of a complex of ecosystems, including tidal flats, floodplains, lowlands and plateaux, and provides a habitat for a wide range of rare or endemic species of plants and animals. © UNESCO صخلملا 2017 Conservation Outlook Significant concern This large and extremely spectacular biodiversity-rich property faces a great number of challenges, in part known thanks to the great amount of research and monitoring that has been undertaken at the site. An important documented decline in many species of small mammals as well as some birds, other species, and critical habitats, the unfortunate recent arrival of cane toads, and the existence of a uranium mine in an enclave of the property are negative factors which will take time to remedy. Positive developments include the relinquishing of one mining lease-hold and incorporation of this area within the property, and the successful management of invasive species such as mimosa and some feral animals. -

The park covers an area of 19,804 km2, extending nearly 200 kilometres from north to south and over 100 kilometres from east to west. It is about one-third the size of Tasmania, or nearly half the size of Switzerland. Kakadu National Park's many habitats support more than 280 species of birds, 74 Mammals, 117 Reptiles, 25 Frogs and 1700 Plant species making it an amazing place to visit as if you are a wildlife enthusiast like myself. Entry fee into the park for a non-resident of the Northern Territory is $25.00 for a 14 day park pass. SOUTH ALLIGATOR FLOODPLAINS (Photo Above - Black-breasted Buzzard) GPS -12.661290, 132.502511 This large floodplain about 40 km west of Jabiru is a fantastic spot to stop and have a look around. The floodplain itself can hold Swamp Harrier, Spotted Harrier, Australian Hobby, Black-shouldered Kite, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Black-breasted Buzzard, Australian Pratincole, Zitting and Golden-headed Cisticolas. The boat ramp area is also worth a look with the possibility of seeing Paperbark Flycatcher, Mangrove Golden Whistler, Mangrove Fantail, Lemon-bellied Flycatcher and maybe even a Great-billed Heron on the river bank. MAMUKALA BILLABONG (Photo Above - Purple Swamphen) GPS -12.649342, 132.572609 Mamukala Billabong is a massive billabong around 36 km west of Jabiru and has a fantastic bird hide set up on the edge of the water, this makes it a great place to sit and see the birds go about their day. -
