THE ROLE OF THE HOME IN EUDORA WELTY’S DELTA WEDDING AND THE OPTIMIST’S DAUGHTER by CLAIRE ELIZABETH CREWS Under the Direction of Pearl A. McHaney ABSTRACT Eudora Welty’s sense of place is often discussed by scholars, but they have limited their discussions of place in Welty’s texts to place as region or, more specifically, the South. In so doing, Welty is often pigeonholed as a regionalist writer. Looking at the home when considering place makes Welty’s texts more universal and appealing to readers of all regions and countries. Every individual either has a home or longs for one; all understand the pull toward a home of some kind. Using the theoretical lens of social and psychological theories of space, place, and the home, this study presents a close reading of the homes in Eudora Welty’s Delta Wedding and The Optimist’s Daughter .

  • Mississippi Radiological Emergency Preparedness Plan 2020 Mrepp
MISSISSIPPI RADIOLOGICAL EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLAN 2020 MREPP Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Office of Response and Radiological Emergency Preparedness October 2020 2020 MREPP This page left blank intentionally. ii 01 October 2020 2020 MREPP Promulgation Statement Transmitted herewith is the revised Mississippi Radiological Emergency Preparedness Plan (MREPP). This plan supersedes all previous plans and may not be reproduced without prior authorization. It provides a framework for structuring and planning State and Local Civil Defense/Emergency Management offsite emergency response to radiological emergencies. Inherent in the issuance of this plan, as an integral part of the Mississippi Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, is recognition of the interrelationship between radiological emergency preparedness planning and other emergency planning. The State's overall emergency planning effort is based on the premise that similarities among the various emergencies, which threaten the public, require maximum standardization of procedures and practices to the extent possible. The State also recognizes the dynamics associated with planning and, consequently, plan upgrading will be accomplished at least annually, and in the ultimate will be a continuing process with the objective of protection of the people from personal injury or loss of life and mitigation of damage or loss of property resulting from radiological emergencies. By virtue of the authority vested in me, by the Constitution of Mississippi and Title 33, Chapter 15, Mississippi Code of 1972, as amended, I hereby promulgate and issue the MREPP as the official guidance of all concerned. It is in the opinion of the State, the plans/procedures are adequate to protect the health and safety of its citizens by providing reasonable assurance that state, local, and tribal governments can and intend to effect appropriate protective measures offsite in the event of a radiological emergency (44 CFR 350.7(d)).

  • Rare Amur Leopard Birth at Jackson Zoo
NEWS 2918 West Capitol Street Jackson, MS 39209 Date: August 30, 2007 Contact: Christopher Mims, Director of Marketing and Public Relations 601-352-2599 Rare Amur Leopard Birth at Jackson Zoo The Jackson Zoo is pleased to announce the birth of a female Amur Leopard, Judda, who turned six weeks old Wednesday. The Jackson Zoo has been home to two Amur Leopards, Nikolai (male) and Katya (female), since 2004. This was Katya’s first pregnancy, and of the two offspring born, only one survived. The surviving cub has had to be hand-fed by Zoo staffers since birth and is not currently on display. “Sometimes new mommies can be a little rough with newborns, and we felt that Judda needed to be observed very closely,” said Vet. Tech Donna Todd. Amur leopards are very distinct from other leopards. Their long legs and long hair allow them to survive in cold, snowy climates. Their spots are widely spaced rosettes with thick borders. The color of their fur changes from lighter in the winter to a more reddish-yellow in the summer. The average adult male weighs between 82-198 pounds and the average female weighs between 62-132 pounds. Photo: Judda practices her ferocious snarl. Amur Leopards are critically endangered with field survey data estimates indicating that there are fewer than 50 leopards left in the wild, making the Amur leopard one of the world’s most endangered cats. The latest results estimated there were 25-40 Amur leopards in the Russian Far East and 4-7 in northeast China (Jilin Province).
