More than 28 thousand years ago, the fi rst humans appeared on Almaty’s territory. In spite of continuously changing eras, civilizations, states, religions, and cultures, the area where the city is now located continued to remain inhabited by humans due to its soft climate and abundance of natural resources. The territory of the city was part of various breeding unions and states: saka and uysun tribes, Turkic, West Turkic, Tyurgeshsky and Karluksky khaganates, Karakhanid state, Mongolian empire, Chagatay state, Zhongar and Kazakh khanates, Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES
There are several sites in close proximity to the city which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Petroglyphs of the archaeological landscape of Tamgaly that consist of more than two thousand rock paintings relating to the Bronze Age, the early Iron Age and the early Middle Ages. Also sites of the “Great Silk Road” in Chanjan-Tian-Shan corridor – the ancient settlement of Talkhiz (Talgar) and candidates for UNESCO World Heritage Sites – «Altyn-Emel» national park and the «Boralday Saka Barrows» archaeological park, the last one being located within the city.

The cultivation of apple trees originated in the foothills of Zailiysky Alatau – current Almaty city. The Sievers apple variety, which according to DNA researches is the ancestor of many apple varieties known today, grows in Almaty. During the spring time, you can observe the blossoming of apple trees in Almaty’s vicinity. You will always remember the spectacular view of gentle white infl orescences against the background of snow-white mountains. In august, you will be able to participate in the harvesting of the most fragrant apples in the world.

The building of the Kazakh state academic theatre named after Abay containing 793 seats is one of the most known sights of Almaty.
Modern Kazakh state academic theatre named after Abay is one of the largest theaters of the Eurasian space where creative structure along with the glorifi ed masters of a scene perfect the art and young talents.
On November 7, 1941 the Theatre has been opened in own building. Same year the theater has been received the status academic and in 1945 the name of Abay has been HALL CONCERT appropriated to him. From June, 1995 to December 13, 2000 the general reconstruction was done in theatre that has kept the main empire style which is combined with the Italian classicism and traditional elements of a national form in architecture of Kazakhstan.

The summer amphitheater «Shabyt» is fully corresponding to the name (in translation from Kazakh - «inspiration»). The theatre is located in the Park of Culture and Leisure of Almaty. This beautiful platform was built in the form of an amphitheater in the 80th, but the last decade the theater did not function. Newly opened amphitheater quickly became the popular center of cultural events of the city. The most interesting and signifi cant concerts, festivals, mass holidays are held here.

Theatre was organized at the end of 1925 in Kyzylorda which was at that time the capital Kazakh ASSR. The theater was opened on January 13, 1926 with the “Golden Ring” performance of Kemengerov’s Cat directed by Seraly Kozhamkulov and big concert.
In 1928 with transfer of the capital the theater was transferred to Almaty. Since 1937 theater has been received the academic rank and since 1961 theatre named after Mukhtar Auezov. Since 2001 the art director the Honored artist of the Kazakh SSR E. Obayev. Performances are in Kazakh with simultaneous interpretation to Russian. CONCERT HALL CONCERT

Legendary high-mountain ice skating rink “Medeu” is located at the height of 1691,2 meters above sea level. It was built in 1972. The surface of ice occupies 10,5 t. sq.m that allows to hold speed skating, hockey and fi gure skating competitions. Soft climate in the gorge, optimum solar radiation level, low atmospheric pressure, a light breeze and clear glacial water provided wide popularity to a high-mountain ice skating rink. More than 120 world records were set here by the famous athletes. In recent years the skating rink was improved after the modernization.
Medeu is famous as excellent concert venue. 13 years in a row the ice skating rink was PALACE SPORTS the huge concert venue where the international festival of music «Voice of Asia» was held. There were Kazakhstan performers and also stars of a world platform. Since 2017 the international festival «Star of Asia» - «The Voice of Asia» became revival of the musical atmosphere of the legendary platform.

The sports palace was built in 1967 by the order of the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport at the Council of Ministers of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Ice arena functioned 9 months a year. Educational and training classes, hockey and fi gure skating competitions were organized in the arena. The international and republican boxing, basketball, karate competitions were held in sports palace, also the ballet on ice, the international exhibitions and republican fairs were organized.

For over a year from the moment of opening the multi-functional ice complex managed to become not only the main sports venue of the city but also the grandiose cultural and entertaining platform. Tournaments and the championships, the Olympic Games and forums, awards and concerts are held in the palace. The street space of a complex was chosen for car shows and festivals of food. Since opening more than 50 mass events were attended by 370 000 people apart from events of Winter Universiade 2017.
Today there are 17 sports clubs in the sports complex including hockey, fi gure skating, short track, curling, boxing, chess, rhythmic gymnastics, yoga, dances, karate, freestyle PALACE SPORTS and Greco-Roman wrestling. More than 1500 children and adults are active in sports clubs on daily basis. Special courses for disabled children are formed on a basis of Almaty Sports City pool. Triathlon school named after of Dmitriy Hague and Scandinavian walking school are available free of charge for retired people. Mass skating and curling sessions are regularly carried out on weekends for citizens from October to April.
Total area is 77 000 m2. Capacity of the main arena is 12 000 visitors.

From the moment of opening the stadium is the home arena of Football club “Kairat”. The fi rst o cial match of Kairat in the highest league was held on April 10, 1960. The total area of the territory is 67 000 m2. The construction consists of three blocks: main arena for 3 000 viewers, training rink and the central block with the food court and administration o ces. The arena is designed in that way that the hockey court can be transformed to the platform for many game and individual sports such as volleyball, basketball, futsal, wrestling, boxing. In this case protection of ice is provided by a special thermo covering.
For short term the complex became the main hockey arena of the city and the venue of the major tournaments on various martial arts. Convenient, cozy, the most ergonomic in PALACE SPORTS the organization of human fl ows the arena attracts more and more visitors. For over a year mass events managed are attended by more than 150 thousand visitors.
