  • Varsity Jazz
Varsity Jazz Jazz at Reading University 1951 - 1984 By Trevor Bannister 1 VARSITY JAZZ Jazz at Reading University 1951 represented an important year for Reading University and for Reading’s local jazz scene. The appearance of Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band at the University Rag Ball, held at the Town Hall on 28th February, marked the first time a true product of the Revivalist jazz movement had played in the town. That it should be the Lyttelton band, Britain’s pre-eminent group of the time, led by the ex-Etonian and Grenadier Guardsman, Humphrey Lyttelton, made the event doubly important. Barely three days later, on 3rd March, the University Rag Committee presented a second event at the Town Hall. The Jazz Jamboree featured the Magnolia Jazz Band led by another trumpeter fast making a name for himself, the colourful Mick Mulligan. It would be the first of his many visits to Reading. Denny Dyson provided the vocals and the Yew Tree Jazz Band were on hand for interval support. There is no further mention of jazz activity at the university in the pages of the Reading Standard until 1956, when the clarinettist Sid Phillips led his acclaimed touring and broadcasting band on stage at the Town Hall for the Rag Ball on 25th February, supported by Len Lacy and His Sweet Band. Considering the intense animosity between the respective followers of traditional and modern jazz, which sometimes reached venomous extremes, the Rag Committee took a brave decision in 1958 to book exponents of the opposing schools. The Rag Ball at the Olympia Ballroom on 20th February, saw Ken Colyer’s Jazz Band, which followed the zealous path of its leader in keeping rigidly to the disciplines of New Orleans jazz, sharing the stage with the much cooler and sophisticated sounds of a quartet led by Tommy Whittle, a tenor saxophonist noted for his work with the Ted Heath Orchestra.

  • Trad Jazz in 1950S Britain—Protest, Pleasure, Politics— Interviews with Some of Those Involved
Trad jazz in 1950s Britain—protest, pleasure, politics— interviews with some of those involved George McKay These are transcriptions of interviews and correspondence undertaken as part of an Arts and Humanities Research Board (now Council)-funded project exploring the cultures and politics of traditional jazz in Britain in the 1950s. The project ran through 2001-2002 and was entitled American Pleasures, Anti- American Protest: 1950s Traditional Jazz in Britain. I edited responses, and structured them here according to the main issues I asked about and to key points that seemed to recur from different interviewees. There is a short-ish introduction to give a sense of context to readers unfamiliar with that period of Britain’s cultural history. I hugely enjoyed meeting and talking with these people, whose cultural and political autobiographies were full of energy, rebellion, fun, with music at the heart. Thank you. Some—Jeff Nuttall, George Melly—are, sadly, now dead. Material from these interviews, and a second set I undertook with modern jazzers and enthusiasts (I acknowledge that the distinction between trad and modern doesn’t always bear scrutiny) was included in my book Circular Breathing: The Cultural Politics of Jazz in Britain (Duke University Press, 2005). Do contact me if you have any queries. George McKay University of Salford, UK [email protected] April 2002; revised (with extra images) September 2002; revised introduction January 2010 (little has change except the point that I now know that the David Boulton jazz historian and the David Boulton of CND were one and the same person) Most of the archive photographs here are either from Jeff Nuttall’s photo album, which he gave me at the end of our interview in Abergavenny—I’d like to pass it on to a family member, please—or © and courtesy of the Ken Colyer Trust: www.kencolyertrust.org 1 Introduction British jazz has arrived, in Britain at any rate.

Cale’s influence on Clapton was profound, and his influence on many more of today’s artists cannot be overstated. To honour JJ’s legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale scheduled to be released July 29, 2014. With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single “Call Me The Breeze.” 1. • Dave Keir – Jazz Multi-Instrumentalist – an Appreciation
Dave Keir – jazz multi-instrumentalist – an appreciation Born 9th April 1928 in Townhill, near Dunfermline, Died 31st May 2019 in Wareham, Dorset Dave Keir, who has died at the age of 91 in south west England, was the last of the pioneering jazz generation that established the Edinburgh area as an important and vibrant centre for traditional jazz in the 1940s. His father worked in the dock yard at Rosyth and his mother, who was self taught, introduced the young Dave to music at home by playing hymns and light classics on an old harmonium. When he was about 10 years old, Dave started to play cornet, receiving free tuition from a miner who played with the local miner’s brass band and it was not long before he was improvising to his mother’s playing. Dave considered this good training for his later move into playing jazz. Later, at secondary school in Dunfermline, he was provided by the music teacher with a bass trombone and a ‘teach yourself’ manual. Dave taught himself to play this new instrument in 6 weeks and was able to take his place in the school orchestra. Although he was never to find the time to become a good reader of music, Dave was on record as saying that, right from the start, he found improvising, what jazz musicians call ‘busking’, easy. In the 1940s, inspired by watching the Bing Crosby film ‘The Birth of the Blues’, he developed a fancy for playing in a jazz band on clarinet then, during National Service in the RAF, Dave played clarinet and alto saxophone in dance band.

  • The DOWNBEAT CLUB and Jazz in Gosport - 1950S to Mid-1960S
The DOWNBEAT CLUB and Jazz in Gosport - 1950s to mid-1960s The earliest recollection we have of Jazz in Gosport comes from long-standing Gosport Jazz Club member, Maurice Kemp, who remembers jazz record recitals at Privett School before the scene moved to Gosport Community Association Bury House, (before the Thorngate Halls were built by the Association, opening in 1960). He also recalls the Downbeat Club started in 1957 by Vic Brown and a few others. Maurice says that "Live bands were gradually introduced both Traditional and Modern using local groups and occasional big names, on roughly every two weeks. Big names I remember were Kenny Ball , Terry Lightfoot, Bob Wallis, and the entire Jonny Dankworth Orchestra in 1962. Modernists he remembers were Joe Harriott and Bert Courtley with Ginger Baker (Cream) on drums. One day jazz festivals were held at Easter with local and visiting Jazz musicians between the years 1960 to 1963. By then, however, the music scene was changing with the arrival of the Fab Four, jazz was no longer as popular, but I believe it carried on for awhile with local Groups." Following from this we managed to contact Vic Brown who now (December 2016) lives at Waterlooville and who confirms being part of founding the Downbeat Club in 1957 at Bury House with colleagues, Vic being Chairman. It rapidly expanded as a trad. jazz club and they once had an attendance of 300, taking over the whole of the ground floor of the House and even held a Jazz Band Ball at Lee Tower. They had a 'modern' night once a month (that featured the likes of Tubby Hayes on tenor sax, Vic Ash on clarinet and Bill Le Sage on vibes and Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce as 'Cream').

  • From the General Manager
VJAZZ 36 October 2007 From the General Manager Well folks, our 2007 AGM is almost upon us - and the year has just flown by. Once again we’ve had an ex- tremely busy time during the last 12 months, and in order to put this into some perspective, here is a summary of our major achievements since November 2006: Re-accreditation as a Museum with Museums Australia (Victoria) until the year 2012. Wantirna premises lease extended with Parks Victoria until 2017. This provides us with a “security of tenure” and includes planning for a relocatable building to house various administrative functions, thus providing more storage capacity within the present building. Purchased and installed several compactus units to provide 245+ lineal metres of shelving storage, more than quadrupling the previous capacity. Received (and still processing) several large collections - including one from the late Mike Sutcliffe. Preservation Audit (funded by a grant from Arts Victoria and completed by a professional Archivist) that will assist in determining future directions for the continued preservation of our material. Mounted a successful 14-day exhibition at Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre. Mounted two exhibitions at our Wantirna premises, namely the Making of an Archive – 10 Years of the VJA and the Fitzgibbon Dynasty. Winning the Best Exhibit/Display category of the prestigious Victoria Community History 2007 Award for our travelling exhibition of “Jazz Spans the Decades”. Applied for “specific projects” funding from the National Library of Australia in Canberra, and the Knox City Council – both of which we are awaiting results to be announced in November.

  • OBITUARY: PAT WADE 1926-2009 by Peter JF Newton
OBITUARY: PAT WADE 1926-2009 by Peter J F Newton ______________________________________________________ [This obituary appeared in the New South Wales Jazz Archive Newsletter, Vol 10, Nos 3-4, July-December, 2009] atrick Lawrence Wade-Brown was his real name but he was better known to jazz lovers in the UK and Australia by his stage name, Pat Wade. He was born P at West Kensington, London, on 21 November 1926. Both parents were show business people working in London’s West End, his mother being a ‘revue’ actress working with the great British comedy actor Jack Hulbert and other musical comedy personalities, while his father was a ballroom dancer in a working partnership with Victor Sylvester, teaching at such fashionable London establishments as the Savoy Hotel, the Ritz and Quaglino’s; engaged, so Pat has said, in ‘teaching and generally gigolo-ing’. Because of his parents’ connections and their record collection, Pat was exposed to American jazz, swing and dance bands of the 20s and 30s. As a youngster, he wanted to learn clarinet but was denied this opportunity by his father. Because of work, the family moved to the Hampshire/Dorset region where Pat was schooled ‘at a procession of private primary and grammar schools’. Pat Wade, pictured in Sydney in 1977… PHOTO CREDIT NORM LINEHAN He went on to study art at Bournemouth (his eye for art surfaced much later in his skilfully prepared photographs of Balmain and other built scenes around Sydney), then took up guitar and had his first gig at the Bournemouth Rhythm Club in 1943.
